We’ve learned that the next platform coming to PSN’s soon-to-be-labeled “Retro Lounge” is none other than the Atari 400/800 collection.* That’s not all though.* For those folks that had an Atari 400/800 computer back in the day, you know games came on both cartridge and cassette.* We understand that both formats will be supported, but it’s the cassette format that deserves discussion.* Those games originally released on cassette will reportedly be distributed through the PS Store in MP3 format.

I know what you’re thinking, MP3 format… what the hell?* Get this; you’re supposed to put the MP3 in your player of choice and then play back the audio file through headphones (or traditional speakers) into the microphone array of the PlayStation Eye.* Yes… the LOADING of the games has been fairly faithfully reproduced!

Back in the day I used to play SCRAM (http://thenewgamer.com/content/archives/gamephemera_scram_atari_400_800) and you won’t believe how stoked I was when I heard this was one of the rumored release titles.* I can’t wait to sit down for 10-12 minutes of screeching nostalgia while my game loads… hoping there weren’t any loading errors causing me to start over.

I’m hoping they also add support for typing in programs from the stacks of old COMPUTE! magazines I have stored in the garage!* Man, the nights I used to spend typing in HEX for hours at a time just to get a simplistic line-art flight simulator… those were the days!

When we learn what some of the other planned platforms are, you can be sure we’ll report on it here!
