View Full Version : If You Could Remove One Franchise From Gaming History...
Shanghai Six 08-01-2009, 07:24 PM Bottom line, if you had the power to go back in time and remove a single franchise (Grand Theft Auto, Zelda, Metal Gear, etc) from the hearts and minds of the gaming universe, which one would you get rid of?
Personally, I could do without the umpteen million Mario Brothers games.
MeRcEnArY 08-01-2009, 07:42 PM Call of duty, so that other shooters stand a chance. . .
TamarindLAZ 08-01-2009, 07:56 PM Guitar Hero.
I think it's pretty much self explanatory.
Killgraft 08-01-2009, 08:38 PM Yea, have fun taking mario out of the picture. Thats like taking the beatles or bob dylan out of modern rock music. It wouldnt be nearly the same. Gaming might be completly gone. I wouldnt take anything out of history; everything has its own place, and Im not so pompous that I would say I know whats best for the industry.
GammaFist 08-01-2009, 08:59 PM I would remove the guitar hero franchise because I think they are just milking it
Shanghai Six 08-01-2009, 09:03 PM No, no, Killgraft, I'm not saying that if Mario disappears, platformers as we know it disappear.
Okay, how about the Leisure Suit Larry franchise.
Gilarus 08-01-2009, 09:37 PM I would get rid of the Halo franchise. Maybe then there wouldn't be as many foul-mouthed 8 year old kids running around.
Ploogle 08-01-2009, 10:59 PM Yea, have fun taking mario out of the picture. Thats like taking the beatles or bob dylan out of modern rock music. It wouldnt be nearly the same. Yeah, although one thing that hasn't brought an ounce of good is the rise of casual gamers. That just brought clueless people into our hobby, shifted the focus of Nintendo to the casual crowd, and is now making Sony and Microsoft focus to an extent on motion controllers.
snclr 08-01-2009, 11:04 PM I'd take out Call of Duty too, however other games have benefited from having it there.
DogsDieInHotCars 08-01-2009, 11:38 PM Take out COD?!?! Shame on you alexaundre! :P I have to agree with gilarus. Byebye master chief
DigIt 08-02-2009, 01:37 AM I would remove the guitar hero franchise because I think they are just milking it
No guitar hero = no rock band. Dumb idea.
Cam-Dog 08-02-2009, 02:51 AM Madden and NCAA Football to get some fresh and fun football games out there that can use the license.
PopTrogdor 08-02-2009, 05:29 AM It's between Call of Duty, Halo and anything with 'Wii____" in the title, they just make me seethe with hatred
Cheese 08-02-2009, 05:42 AM Everybody complains about how much Guitar Hero is milking the series but what about Fifa. They get away with making a new game every year and adding a couple of features. I'd remove them.
xWhit3XFeath3Rx 08-02-2009, 10:30 AM Definitely the Madden NFL series....I loved NFL 2k5, then EA eliminated the competition by signing an agreement with the NFL and making Madden the one and only NFL game on the market
Millakilla 08-02-2009, 11:05 AM Explain the question a bit more, Are you saying that if we choose a franchise that it would be like that franchise never existed and everything else would stay like it is now or would it affect other games too kinda like an alternate 1985:lol:
trueblu93 08-02-2009, 02:16 PM Probably any of the Sonic 3D games or Pokemon etc. And maybe anything by Nintendo
Brian 08-02-2009, 02:21 PM MMOs like World of warcraft they suck out your soul!!!!!!!!!
TamarindLAZ 08-02-2009, 03:17 PM Everybody complains about how much Guitar Hero is milking the series but what about Fifa. They get away with making a new game every year and adding a couple of features. I'd remove them.
You also might as well also remove all other sports games because they do that too.

There was a point when they were on PS2. But now they might as well have updates (like squads and other features) instead. Unless its a complete overhaul.
Parky105 08-02-2009, 03:27 PM In my opinion Grand Theft Auto...Although I love games where you get to cave in skulls and shoot big guns...this is a kinda unnecessary game, with a poor story line...its repetitive and in my opinion, boring...
I am definitely not a 'violence hater' like a lot of the boring, old people who don't like GTA..I just personally don't enjoy playing these games...:undecided:
Cheese 08-02-2009, 04:01 PM You also might as well also remove all other sports games because they do that too.
Yeah I agree. I just only chose one example as the thread says pick one example.
Sports games could all release the changes they make each year as DLC. But they won't as it makes them more money this way.
TinyButDeadly 08-02-2009, 04:45 PM I would probably get rid of Guitar Hero or Halo.
xbellx 08-02-2009, 07:58 PM I would get rid of the Halo franchise. Maybe then there wouldn't be as many foul-mouthed 8 year old kids running around.
Vault Dweller 08-02-2009, 08:29 PM Yup, Guitar Hero/Rock Band gets my vote. I could also live without the Metal Gear series if only to do away with all the annoying god-like reverence it gets.
MercenaryR56 08-08-2009, 10:02 PM Haze and Halo. The two H's
And I don't get all the people saying Guitar Hero and Rock Band. I find those games very fun (Keep in mind I don't play them 24-7). And even if Guitar Hero is "milking it", if you havent heard, Guitar Hero 5 is looking to rise above Rock Band in terms of quality and gameplay. I couldn't imagine not having those kind of music games.
Pulviriza 08-09-2009, 06:44 AM I know you're gonna hate me, but the warcraft franchise. Then we wouldn't have World of Warcraft or DotA! Those are like my 2 least favourite games. (Also means probably no Demigod or Heroes of Newerth)

With out Warcraft we wouldn't have many good strategy games, and all of the MMO's would be crap
Vault Dweller 08-09-2009, 09:09 PM With out Warcraft we wouldn't have many good strategy games, and all of the MMO's would be crap
Not necessarily. WOW was just the first to really hit it big. If it wasn't WOW, it would have been something elsem eventually. The MMO genre, by its nature, would have produced something similar in time. As for the RTS genre, while the pre-WOW games were awsome, they did not define it. Look at all the other excellent and, often, more technically proficient and in-depth RTS games; to say Warcraft is the reason the genre good as it is, well, is a bit of hyperbole. It contributed, sure, but didn't define it.
Pulviriza 08-10-2009, 02:23 AM What about Everquest and NWN, they were all pre-WoW, also, starcraft is similar enough to warcraft that it wouldn't really change the rts genre. Anyway, in my books, the most influential games, Dune II and Red Alert, had already been released.
Clap4DonMarco 08-10-2009, 09:45 PM You know what franchise I can't stand? I know I'm going to get ripped apart for this, but I want Street Fighter gone. I have played too many times and been called NOOB because I havent sunk 5 hours a day into the game to master it. I want a game that takes strategy and past experience from others in the genre (Puzzle, RPG, Platformer) and honestly I find Street Fighter hopelessly boring. Burn in hell Street Fighter!

I share your pain, man. But don't toss the baby out with the bath water. Street Fighter has had some great games in its long life, many of which still hold up to most modern fighters. If you can find a good group of like-minded people to play with (as in, not douchebags) it can be an awesome experience.
Clap4DonMarco 08-10-2009, 10:01 PM Agreed. But did you really need to quote the message right above you? =P
Naw i'm just messing with you. It's not that I hate on fighters in general. Soulcalibur is one of my favorite games of all time. I just don't like that particular series.
nonmelodic 08-11-2009, 08:53 AM Gta, but not actually remove it forever, just from the presses eyes. So they can actually blame something logical on real life violence.
Exane22 08-11-2009, 10:07 AM Can I just say all sports games ever?
Rockiekiller 08-11-2009, 10:14 AM Haze and Halo. The two H's
Haze is not a Franchise yet a franchise needs at least 2 games
and i totally agree about halo its over rated:thumbsup:
Brinks 08-12-2009, 09:41 AM DJ Hero. I know it's not a franchise. Not yet. I want to stop it before it starts.
Diortem 08-12-2009, 09:42 AM I cant believe no one mentioned the Imagine series! Or Babyz! Or any of that crap!
Salem 08-12-2009, 11:25 AM Dragon Blade franchise for the N64 and the Wii
Brinks 08-14-2009, 11:28 AM I cant believe no one mentioned the Imagine series! Or Babyz! Or any of that crap!
Lol, those are so bad I'm starting to not consider them games, side effects of playing include ripping out hair, blindness and permanent face-palm.

All good grounds to make this the franchise to eliminate.... maybe to eliminate Ubisoft too... just so they dont have a chance to get the idea....
Clap4DonMarco 08-14-2009, 11:36 AM I have an army of chocobos here with Ubisoft's name on a banner...
Diortem 08-14-2009, 11:47 AM Let me get my Corinians (http://www.spore.com/sporepedia#qry=usr-Megabyte114|500397140548%3Asast-500412392330%3Apg-80) and Ill meet you there.
Quixotic Hamster 08-15-2009, 12:15 AM Oh, but there is a series I wish to eradicate from the whole of the space-time continuum. One set that makes me grate my teeth in anguish and wallow in agony! That series is none other than the infamous...
...I cannot think of a single series that I have played that makes me feel such as this! Every game adds a little to the genre as a whole. Without games, even those like ET, we would not see the game industry as it is now.
Jia Xu 08-15-2009, 02:02 PM Mine is a tad different...
Phantasy Star Universe. Gone.
I am a huge fanboy of the Phantasy Star genesis RPGs, so for them to close the series with IV and turn it into a futuristic MMO pisses me off every time I think about it.
Nerd rage! Rawr!
Str8 Sober 08-18-2009, 06:57 AM 50 cent.
SpecJoe Magic 08-18-2009, 11:38 PM I could also live without the Metal Gear series if only to do away with all the annoying god-like reverence it gets.
I agree. I would also like to add another reason. The series has turned into a badly written, nonsensical movie with average gameplay. It's supposed to be a game but about half of it is a movie. The praise it receives along with the large sales numbers gives publishers incentive to start making more games with hours of cutscenes and less gameplay. That would be a very bad thing.
