http://sarcasticgamer.com/wp/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/holy-hermione-batman-236x300.jpgHermione seems to have cast a tightening spell on my pants.
Once upon a time, a friend and his wife (let’s call them Dave and Amanda to protect their anonymity, hey guys!) were firmly entrenched in the “Harry Potter Is Freakin’ Awesome” camp. I couldn’t help but guffaw and slap my knee, usually with a bombastic, “Harry Potter is for KIDS!” and then go back about my business of naysaying things I’d never tried…although I still think I’m pretty safe when the same argument comes to the whole “Twilight” oohey-gooey-Vampires-in-love mess. I mean, the female protagonist’s name is Bella Swan? Come on, what are we, twelve?
Anyway, by about the announcement of the fourth Harry Potter book, the ground swell of Harry Potter-mania grew, and I couldn’t help but arch an eyebrow. “Now what’s all this tomfoolery?” I would query and twirl my handlebar mustache. I figured I’d better take a look and see just what all the tomfoolery was about, so my friend gave me some instructions, and if you have yet to drink the Harry Potter kool-aid, I strongly suggest you follow them. He told me that I should watch the first movie to get images of all of characters and settings embedded into my head, then start reading. I ain’t never much had the attention span of being a reader, so watching the first movie was simple. I found out that it wasn’t…awful. Kind of like that first bite of a new foreign dessert, only to find out that, hey, this isn’t so bad after all.
Next thing I know, I’m standing in line outside of a Borders the day of the seventh and final Harry Potter novel, eagerly awaiting to see how this whole series was planning on wrapping up. I think at some point, a part of my consciousness stepped outside of my body and asked, “How in the Wide World of Sports did I get here?”
The Harry Potter series ended what, two years ago now? Of course, that overly saccharine Twilight series has been said to step up and fill the void left by J.K. Rowling’s epic masterpiece, though I find that highly unlikely. I wrote just the other day about how the Twilight MMO had a stake driven into its heart, hopefully never to regenerate, but what about a Harry Potter MMO? I can’t believe I didn’t think of it, but my decade of MMORPG experience makes the series a logical contender for a really good MMORPG.
I mean, let’s break it down:
1) Wizards. First grade, levels 1-10. Second grade, levels 11-20, etc. Aren’t there seven wizarding levels? Dur?
2) And a-duh? Wizard war? No warriors or archers, just offensive and defensive spell casting with some help from familiars.
3) Can’t swing a dead cat without hitting a magical, mythical creature or spirit.
4) Four separate houses you can join, covering good, neutral and evil alignments.
5) Quiddich arena-style mini-game.
6) Epic, already built storyline and setting with an established rabid fanbase dying to send J.K. Rowling oversized bags of money for new material from the Harry Potter universe.
7) Running out of fresh content? Too easy! Poof! Magick yourself a new wing of the Hogwarts School or the surrounding area…or hell, entire expansions for the French Beauxbatons and German Durmstrang schools!
How in God’s name did I miss this? I’m copyrighting all of this right now! Trademark! I call it! Shotgun!
So who’s with me? To arms, fellow dorks and dork-ettes! What other ideas would you have for a Harry Potter MMORPG?
