^^ you were really digging there, weren't ya?

Anyway, you've no idea how much I enjoy that a member from London ended up making an American football thread, it pleases me greatly. So, everybody gearing up for the pre-season? Personally, I hate pre-season football, but by now I'm so starved for any kind of football on tv that I've started watching ESPN Classic. It hurts me.

Speaking of ESPN... does that show NFL? because we recently got it over here as it has started showing "soccer"

Also i started it because ive always loved American Football. I got into it because of Madden and now id say if i HAD to support someone id say Chargers, mainly because of LaDanian Tomlinson. FANTASTIC player :)

Anyway pre season should be interesting... if Vick gets into a team then it will be interesting to see how he reacclamates himself to the NFL

Oh yeah, especially on weekends, ESPN pretty well dedicates itself to NFL coverage, although a lot of times their preseason coverage is less than astounding. I agree wholeheartedly with getting into football due to Madden, however since I live in the midwest, it's really all we had to do as kids, sit around bored or go outside and gather up a bunch of kids, each of us hoping to be like Jerry Rice or Dan Marino.

I agree with you that LaDainian is phenomenal, though it makes me cry on the inside that you're for the Chargers, haha. I'm a Colts fan, myself, so even while I admire LaDainian's skill, part of me privately hopes the Chargers do worse this year than they have in the past. :) Kicked the Colts' butts soundly, to my dismay.

Ehh, don't get me started on Vick. :) For your own safety

Oh, I know he's an excellent player, it just irritates me anytime one player takes sole credit for his team's successes. Only time that should happen is in NASCAR, a sport I tend to view with heavy amounts of disdain. Nicely done with Madden '09 :) I'm in the midst of Franchise mode in '08, myself. Too cheap to keep buying the latest edition.

I suggest you buy Madden 10, it will be really good from what ive seen. They are bringing in team tackles so you can fight for those extra yards when you get tackled by bringing in lots of other players to push your player forward :)

I'm a huge football fan. Growing up, I've always been a Chicago Bears fan, and I've never been so pumped for the season to begin. With Jay Cutler as Quarterback, I think we have a good chance of winning our division.

And I agree with you before, LaDainian Tomlinson is a good player, but he's definitely underperformed the past couple of seasons. Personally, I think Michael Turner, his former back-up, is going to outshine him in most rushing categories. I've been following Turner since his college days at NIU, and I think he's going to become one of, if not the best, running back(s) in the NFL.

if i remebr correctly peyton mannings "rocket arm" barely made it into the playoffs last year and even then they didnt get past there first match

and i know the cowboys didnt get into the playoffs them selfs last year but there were team issues that contributed to that now that as much as i hate to say it TO has gone i think its likely we get up to true cowboy standard

on a side note tom brady is a legend he has a right to take some creddit grantwed probably not all of it but quite a bit it was an unfortunate injury he and the pats sustained last year but hes back and im sure he will be better than ever

everyone expected the steelers because of how they played the cardnials lumped in at 8-8 and just pwned face untill the last minute of the SB. they were similar to the colts when they won it (losing and similar then dominating in the playoffs)

dissapointing start for TO then

He only played for like two series though. He had a few catches.

The Packers are just going to dominate this year. Aaron Rodgers has a year under his belt to mesh with their sick receivers Driver and Jennings. Their offense is going to own. Now they've switched to a 3-4 defense and have one of the best secondaries in the league. I sense some ownage this year.

Favre to Freeman MNF vs Vikings in overtime to win the game, best catch ever?

The Cardinals only had their chance because the Seahawks were all injured. Last year we swept pre-season, but didn't have a full team for the regular season. This year I am expecting them to pretty much throw away pre-season. Try unusual plays and test out some rookies. When the regular season rolls around we will bring it hard, and with a full team.

PayneTrain

I used to dabble in the Redskins and Dolphins, but then I stuck on one player, Drew Brees. My dad's a Dolphins fan, tells me about all of the great stuff Dan Marino did, and I saw a lot of Dan Marino in Drew Brees. I was getting into Pro Football (I've been watching college since I was born, GO HOKIES!) and then he ended up in New Orleans. Now I'm a Saints fan, and a fan of New Orleans itself.

To the nitty gritty...
Expect the Saints to gravitate to the top of the NFC South this year, with Atlanta, and the vein of my existence as quarterback, vying for the Wild Card. Arizona's restacked themselves nicely, so I can see them winning the NFC West. I pick the Cowboys from the East, and the Bears in the North, because, someone has to win the North, right?
I can see Atlanta knocking over the Bears and Seattle to ride the Dark Horse as it did years ago through Dallas (whoop-de-doo) and then Arizona, meeting up against my Saints. Not calling that one yet, don't want to look like too much of a fool.

In the AFC, I love the Dolphins winning the East, but since I'm not delusional, they could slip into seed five whilst the Pats grab the throne of #1. I can see the North being taken by Pittsburgh, because not even Baltimore can stick it to them that much, can they? In the South, I expect Indy to take the 2 spot and hope the Titans grab the other Wild Card spot. I just like them in the AFC, good underdog, like the Saints and Seahawks. In the pit of mediocrity, I expect the spark left in the Chargers to stick em at the 4 spot. So Miami will slide by the Chargers, and Tennessee to upset the Steelers. Miami could beat Indy, and Tennessee could beat New England. I can see the Titans knocking on Lombardi's door this season.

originally there were two leagues the american football league and the national football league, but at some point the afl merged with the nfl to create the nfl with the national football conference ( the former nfl) and the american football conference (the old afl). the afl teams became the afc teams and the nfl teams nfc teams

so theres nothing to do with like positioning in the country? because atm it seems like the NFC is much better than the AFC... so why not mix them up and make it so you COULD get like a Pats vs Steelers Superbowl or a Pats vs Chargers :)

AND finally, wheres devin hester nowadays? i remember a season or two ago when he burst on to the scene, he was AWESOME at kick returns :P

The Bears decided to make him into a Wide Receiver, and I've heard that with his contract re-negotiation, he's lost all incentive to succeed at Punt Returns (Daniel Manning now takes kickoffs). If you notice the past year or two, Hester has lost that "play-making" ability, he generally runs right out of bounds like a little wuss...if you ask me, I don't think teaching a guy how to play as a Wide Receiver strips him of the ability to returns kicks/punts, so I wouldn't be surprised if the contract rumor is true.

Even though I'm a big Bears fan, I do not like Hester...I'd much rather see Earl Bennett, Brandon Rideau, and Devin Aromashodu as the top 3 Receivers on the depth chart, with Devin Hester traded away for some picks or a legit WR

Picks is right, man. Chicago traded away the farm to get Cutler under center, and it would be good to get some of that base back. Then again, Jay's gotta throw it to a WR sometime.

Seahawks score a touchdown within 3 min of the game starting, and then finished the half moving the ball 80 yards for another touchdown.

I have to go to bed and will miss the rest of the game, but right now in the 3rd we have 17 Seahawks - 10 Broncos.

Yeah, very true, however I'm really glad to have given up those picks for Cutler. If you look back at the past couple years at the Bears' first round picks, you'd see why I don't really mind. Do names like Cade McNown, Anthony Thomas, David Terrell, or Cedric Benson ring a bell? Plus, I thought that this year was kind of a weak draft class; I don't think that the talent that was available at 18th overall was better than (or even matched) that of Cutler. The 3rd round pick we lost this year didn't matter much either, for we had a compensatory 3rd round pick anyways. Now, what next year's draft class is going to develop into, I'm not totally sure, but I support the deal that was made. It's not very often that a 25-year old Pro Bowl Quarterback is on the trading block, and I'm fine with getting rid of a Quarterback like Orton and a few possible "boom-or-bust" draft picks.

This reminds me a few years back about Desmond Howard for the Packers. I can see the exact same thing happening. Howard wanted to do more than kick and punt returns so the Packers frickin traded him and bam I am pretty sure he lasted maybe just a few more seasons after that. So I'm guessing same thing is gonna happen to him.

Oh the Packers just dominated the Bills last night. It almost wasn't fair.

So...that's about 2 people who're disappointed overall, including Kurt Warner, right?
Actually, as cynical as I usually am about any teams preseason successes, the Packers are looking pretty good this year. I'm eager to see how they do, it'd be nice for 'em to have a winning season like the good ol' days.
(Of course, I still have the idle hopes that Miami is going to kick ass this year too, so meh, we'll see.)

Rodgers is looking gooood man. I will say that Cromartie was the guy they scored all of their passing TDs against, that guy was way out of it tonight. And Jennings went down hard man. Here's hoping he just got the wind knocked out of him and was pulled because it's a preseason game. But you'd better be careful talking like that when the #1 receiver on your team is ailing. :)

It is no worry, he will be ready by the opener against Chicago. Even if he was injured the Packers have so many weapons on offense it would only be a slight set back. Plus with a defense that has 15 takeaways in 3 games will give any team a chance to win a game. Dom Capers is a fricken genius. Its about time they implemented the 3-4 in Green Bay. In all my years in Madden I have always made them run a 3-4 so glad to see my wishes come true.

You are very wrong. Bad petergriffen1990 bad. The only reason i say this is because of the past. He has had decent receivers if not better in Chicago, but still failed miserably. so we are basing this totally on the past? we know a lot of players with bad history's but with the right shiz can get a job done

did we all forget he was shit at new orleans? then came to miami with jamie nails blocking for him he had an exsplosive season... he has a ride or die guy with him

But that was it, one year, then Ricky went hay-wire and ran off to some country to smoke weed all day. Only came back last year and had a less then stellar year. So if history tells us anything is that it repeats itself. Orton was never great, maybe just mediocre, so I don't see how he will excel when he has never excelled in the past. :undecided:

I'm not so sure awesome is the word I'd use to describe how the Saints looked against the Skins. Opportunistic, maybe, and lucky, definitely. But that's no knock against New Orleans, you just don't roll off 12 wins in a row without getting lucky once or twice. Trust me, I'm a Colts fan, and we should have lost at least two games by now.

I think Indy's coaching staff will pull their players once they lock up home field, but I'm really hoping they go for it and try to go 19-0. Every year someone wins the Super Bowl, but if you go 16-0 and win it, you make a strong case for being considered the greatest team in the history of the NFL. That, I think, is worth the risk. What do you guys think?

I think it's awesome because I witnessed the win in person. The cold temperatures, the tired Saints, the evil Redskins fans, and being dominated the whole game, but still winning--it's crazy shit.

In fact, I'm one or two more wins like that one away from becoming a zealot for a football team.

I mean, we're the Saints. We're not SUPPOSED to be marginally successful, yet now we are.

Brandon Marshall set an NFL record for 21 receptions in a single game. And that was in a loss with Kyle Orton as his QB. Orton's not awful or anything, but just imagine how great Marshall would be with a great QB. He's got speed, size, and hands. Doesn't get much better (other than a motivated Randy Moss).

They should be able to beat the Cheifs in Cincy & possibly beat the Jets. They'll end up winning the AFC North. But if they don't get the passing game on track, I doubt they get past the first round. If they get Jacksonville in the first round then we have a chance. A warm weather team coming to Cincy in January makes me feel better. Other than that I just don;' see us finishing well.

Steelers have basically imploded. That team is NOTHING without Head and Shoulders so with the way the Packers are playing I say they'll probably take care of business...as much as I don't want them to.

The thing I'm most looking forward to is Saints-Cowboys. I know Romo is trash in Dec but the Saints are NOT as good as everyone thinks they are and I think if Dallas plays their best game (and have Ware) they have a great shot at beating them. I mean....the redskins should have beat them. THE REDSKINS! They're very talented but it seems like the smug fans already have their parade route planned.

I know Romo is trash in Dec but the Saints are NOT as good as everyone thinks they are and I think if Dallas plays their best game (and have Ware) they have a great shot at beating them.

I kind of agree, except the Saints have a very opportunistic defense (Lots of fumble recoveries and interceptions returned for TDs). They're one of the better defenses to have in Fantasy Football, for example. But you make a good point, all it takes is one bad game when you're in the playoffs. Their offense is all-but-unstoppable, but if the defense doesn't show up, they give up too many points (see: Redskins game).

I was going to go into what I thought of their D but I figured I'd be rambling. You pretty much hit the nail on the head with "opportunistic". The only reason, imo, they have that many ints is they're usually up by two scores late and they know the long ball is coming. Darren Sharper is a great ballhawk, no denying it, but the guy can't stop the run nor can the saints d in general. The thing is, once these guys run into an offense that can run effectively and control the ball, and a defense that can get pressure on Drew Brees, we might not see the same Saints club we've seen all year.

Yes! The Miami game is absolutely proof of that.

I do love me a good Football game, but American Football is a hell of a lot more entertaining to watch.

how is more entertaining to watch? Each quarter is like 15 minutes long, and most of that is spent standing about!

I get more excited when my team scores a touchdown than when a goal is scored in Football. I like to see the huge struggle and the breathtaking catches. The interceptions...the sacks...the turnovers. Everything about American Football is great to me. They do stand around sometimes, but they're almost always right back into the game seconds later. I'll take my awesome games over run and kick 3 points scored total by both sides Football any day.

and then of course if you are American, you will eat until you become obese, drive huge cars that use up a ton of fuel, be obnoxious, and have no clue about anything outside of your little bubble of America.

Oh look, i can stereotype too!

@DeadpoolSkye

Meh, fair play, what ever floats your boat as they always say. American Sports do not interest me, unless im in an American Pub, getting pissed and having the rules explained to me by someone who is really into it.

For example, went to new york, was the Yankees Home Opener, and also the day after my 21st birthday, anyway, so was in New York, sat in this fantastic little cellar pub on 56th street i think. Anywho, sitting there drinking a ton of Long Island Iced Teas, talking to the Barmen who was a fantastic guy, ended up giving all our drinks on the house :D And we sat there and watched the home opener with him, and i loved it, because he told us the rules, gave us a run down of the players etc, and it was brilliant :D (i know thats baseball, but you get the picture :P)

Best thing was, the Barmen had his PSP linked to a webcam at home and he would play pranks on his family during stops in play and watch them get all confused :P

I think they will too especially if owners and the PA can't come to a competitive agreement and they loose the salary cap and shared revenue. It will turn into that MLB and nobody wants that.

Well, before the NFL can turn into the MLB, the football players will need to start taking steroids.

WHO DAT....lol

Maybe all the bandwagoners will go back to their holes and the real fans gain a little bit of humility. If not for another missed chip shot they'd be 12-2 and have the 2nd seed with a Vikings win tonight. Also I can't ****ING believe the same scenario nearly played out twice with the missed FG. Shit was eerie.

Seriously, how do you score 17 points in your first three drives, then proceed to put you thumbs up your asses and waltz around the field against the worst team in the NFL and STILL LOSE?

Hey. At least the Colts lost too. That was just embarrassing.
I mean...I get not wanting Peyton (who became the 4th person, youngest person, and fastest time doing so to get 50,000 passing yards that game) and other star players to get hurt. You want them rested for the playoffs...but when you're the only team in the NFL with an undefeated season (I believe their record was 23-0 carrying over from last season), don't you want to finish off with a big fanfare? If Manning was in there more, the Colts would've won that game.

But I don't care. The Cardinals are in the playoffs again and I couldn't be happier!

And I just face-palmed.
I was really, really hoping that nobody was going to mention all of that. Damn.

Yeah, the Colts have done this twice now, and both times it seems an awful lot like throwing games. Enough so that the NFL Commish Goodell is talking about stepping in to dissuade teams from doing so in future seasons. I'm among the majority of Colts fans who seem to think that it was sheer idiocy on the part of either the coach, Jim Caldwell, or the Colts' President. It's a perfectly legal thing to do, benching your entire starting line up, for now, but it's an incredibly douche move as well.

I think that this practice should forever be called "Pulling a Colt," seeing as they threw away a perfect season like that.

In other news, I'm fairly certain that the Cardinals pulled a Colt tonight. I didn't see it because it wasn't playing in my region tonight, but I heard that Leinart played a lot...which is never good.

Great 13-0 to 13-3. Just ****ing terrific. Signing grisled free agents are great, until their old bones fall apart... At least they have a week to get all of the hip replacements done before they have to play whoever the **** decides to walk in the Superdome. I've waited half my life for the team to play well, and now this? It's almost as bad as when they couldn't win at all.
