When you hear the words “death” and “spank” in close proximity, you wouldn’t think to slap the two together.* You certainly don’t think of the word “Deathspank”, because what kind of crazy name is that for anyone to name anything?

Ron Gilbert apparently does, and has been doing so for some time.** Who’s Ron Gilbert?* Oh, no one special, just a game designer with such titles to his credit as the Maniac Mansion or Tales of Monkey Island series under his belt, and he just happened to be this year’s key note speaker at PAX 2009.* What’s that do for ya?

So Hothead Games, the studio that has been putting out the Penny Arcade Adventure series On the Rainslick Precipise of Darkness apparently were not content with 2d/3d adventure gaming and decided to branch out.* What did they end up with?* Well, imagine taking a Diablo style beat-em-up clickfest, but add a sense of humor that will keep you making obscure references to your friends and family for months.

I got to talk with Hothead Games co-founder and Director of Games development, Vlad Ceraldi, at PAX.* I literally walked up after they finished running the demo for a crowd of bewildered and giggling gamers, asked them what in the hell they were going on about, and they granted me an interview on the spot.* Approachable!
