I am certianly not the biggest Halo* fan that has ever lived, but I sure do love me some Firefight in ODST. I’ve been playing the hell out of it over the past couple of days and after the jump, I’ll give you a few tips and food for thought that may help you unlock more skulls than you ever thought possible.
The Newbie Guide to Firefight, after the jump.
There are few basic principles to get out of the way before we hit the nitty gritty.
1. Team Coordination.
This mode REQUIRES team work. If you’re not willing to do it, then don’t bother playing, because you’re just going to piss three other peopl off.
2. Learn the map.
Take time to wander around and scout out the locations of the weapons and turrets that you can take advantage of on a given map. Knowing where the rocket pod is on Windward is the difference between owning that map and being a victim.
3. Savor the health packs.
Don’t be that guy that takes a health pack when you lose a millimeter of health.* You only get a few per round and you have to make them last.
SPECIFIC TIPS AND STRATEGIES
1. Who is doing what?
On each map, there will be defensible positions that you can take advantage of. On certain maps there will be very specific weapons that you can take advantage of. Not everyone can do everything, so it’s very important to designate who is doing what. Who is running across the map to get the rocket launcher? Who is manning the turret? Who is watching the back of the guy on the turret?
Designate roles for each teammate right away.* Knowing what the other is doing and what your specific job is will help coordinate defensive tactics and keep you sane when things get crazy and it will keep you alive. Instead of two or three dudes racing for the rocket launcher, with the potential of three guys dying, only one takes that risk while the other three cover the rocket racer.
2. Play Zone Defense
Most of the maps in Firefight are symmetrical. That means that you can break down each map in to defensible quadrants that can be assigned to each teammate. On Crater, for instance, when defending the area around the turret, you can designate two teammates to watch the stair wells on each side of the turret, while on other mans the turret and kills everthing in front of him, while the fourth is the counter sniper and watches the other three teammates back.* Using this simple defensive tactic, you’ll never get blind sided by a flying Brute or a wayward suicidal grunt.
3. Name everything.
Giving areas of each map easy to remember names or designating areas as “right side” or “left side” may sound like common sense, but it goes a long way toward coordinating a defense against an enemy rush, especially in the later rounds as more skulls become unlocked. The less you have to think about where you’re supposed to be, so you can concentrate on what you have to shoot at, could be the difference between a cheap death that costs your team or making it past the last wave of Brute Chieftains.
4. Know what weapon to use.
Each weapon has a purpose.* The silenced pistol is for grunt head shots. The silenced SMG is for taking out the flying drones. Needlers are great for taking out basic Brutes and you’ll need the carbine for the Brute Chieftains and the Jackal snipers, as your pistol does not have the range to take out long distance foes.
Do not be afraid to immeidately drop a weapon for another. Sure, you like using the silenced pistol, but against Brutes, you’re better off with a plasma rifle or a needler. On the other hand, against the Drones, the needler is almost useless, so drop that for an SMG.* In Firefight, there will be no shortage of weapons to use, so switch it up as the situation calls for it.
These are just a few basic tips to raise your game in Firefight. Stay tuned as we’ll dig a bit deeper into Firefight and formulate new strategies to take your game to the next level.
