View Full Version : Episode 20: In Memory of James Price McKinney

Quite simply, this episode of the podcast is a tribute to the best friend I ever had. I'd like to thank Lono, Alex, and Dave for agreeing so easily to do this. This episode features a new spin on an old story, and features the comedic talents of my dear, departed friend. For the purists in our midst, this episode has almost nothing to do with video games, however it does reveal something of the hidden pre-history of Sarcastic Gamer. I appreciate you and anyone else that listens to this episode. Price was a tremendous friend, and a hell of a funny guy. The "Redneck Christmas Carol" was written by Doc Adams and Price McKinney and was produced by Brent Michael Davis with Doc and Price.

Price,
You were the best friend I ever had. I will miss you until I see you again.
"Tears in a bucket... **** it."
Doc
There's some things I don't have now
Some things I don't talk about
These things are between myself and I
In my thick skull the joker hides
There's consequences I'm scared to taste
Cold hard truths I can't face
These days are different than the past
Reflections change in the looking glass
And everywhere I look there's something to learn
A sliver of truth from every bridge we burn
A hatful of quarters and a naked song
Don't answer the question of where we belong
How come birds
Don't fall from the sky when they die?
How come birds
Always look for a quiet place to hide
These words
Can't explain what I feel inside?
Like birds I need a quiet place to hide
These independent moves I make
This confidence I try to fake
You can hear the beating of my heart
But not a feather falling in the dark
And everything I hear never makes any sense
Another old prophet perched on the fence
A cupful of pencils and a self help guru
Don't answer the question of what I am to you
--Elton John "Birds"

Besides sarcastic gamer, it's been a pretty rough year for yours truly. I just hope that everyone has the best damn Christmas and a Fraking great New Year, and then we forget this year forever. Except for Sarcastic Gamer. Praise Be Its Name.

Happy Holidays to everybody on the forums, you guys are the best.

jesus Doc, this is a really deep side of you (a side i would've have though you would have the courage to show on air)

man i have a whole new level of respect to you

dude seriously, that must've took some serious guts

i know what you've been through, i lost 3 of my friends to suicide in the past 2 years

feels strange knowing that there is only 2 of us left (of the group of 5, we all grew up together)

but as cliché as it is, as long as you remember, they aren't ever gone

Happy Xmas To all you Sarcastic Gamer Dudes and Dudettes out there!

Thank you for sharing what is obviously something very personal. James was seemingly a very funny guy. It may come as little conpensation for the loss of a friend but you guys really helped me through a difficult patch in my life (although my problems were nothing in comparison) I think James would be both proud that you are honouring his memory and proud that the both of you were able to bring joy to the world (with your Redneck Xmas etc) and that you continue to entertain the world, through SG, with him as your inspiration.

Its not often I quote other people but I hope these words help you as much as your words helped me.

Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sunlight on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning hush,
I am the swift uplifting rush
of quiet birds in circled flight,
I am the soft stars that shine at night,
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there; I did not die.

Doc I cant say how sorry I feel for you.
My heart really does go out to you.
That podcast was really a beautiful tribute and brought a tear to my eye.
My best friend died of cancer in 2004 and before he died he wrote me a letter that his mom gave me after his death.

His finishing lines might apply to you as well.
No matter where you go
No matter how high you fly
Ill be by your side
We'll always play in your dreams

On the non-serious note:
The Christmas Story was hilarious
Some of my fav quotes from the 2 times ive listened to it are:
Yeah we were taking bets its 3 to 1 odds that you were gay
Every idiot who runs around saying Merry Chirstmas should be dipped in goat puke and buried with mistletoe through his heart

Loved the episode and respect to you for being such a good buddy to James Price McKinney :)

I even shed a tear listening to this episode cause it reminds me of things i dont feel like sharing, not anything against anyone but its something i wanna keep to myself:)
But i was really happy for this episode and keep rocking on everyone:)

And as a last note i will listen to this every year. It was simply genious. Loved the "who let them dogs out" part:D

I'm a long-time listener of the show, but I just registered now.

I love the show, even though you never talk about PC gaming (rarely anyway) which is my gaming format, but I still listen to it anyway because it makes me laugh and gives me news about console gaming and other gaming related stuff.

Anyway, I thought this episode was a very touching sentiment, and I (almost) shed a tear at the start. I've never lost anyone close to me (fortunately), but I can empathise with how this would upset you, and I'm sorry for your loss.

Keep doing the show. God bless.

The message that came across in the intro to the podcast is you have some great people in your corner that work on the site and do the podcast with you, as you know. Also remember that you have all of us as well. I lost my step-father two years ago and all I can say is hang in there and surround yourself with great people. This may be a bit long and my apologies for that first off.

I have listened to the all of the Podcasts but until this recent Podcast have not felt the need or desire to sign up on the forums or participate at length. Honestly the main reason is simply because my time is limited. However I enjoy keeping up to date with gaming news, despite my lack of owning a next gen console, and the comedic humor is right down my alley. But after listening to the pure human emotion expressed in this last podcast I felt the need to write this. As much as all of you joke and make fun of each other it truly shows your real personality when a fellow friend is in need of support and THAT is what makes a community a joy to be a part of and what makes this a special place.

Before any of us are anything else we are humans and therefore can relate to pure human feelings and emotions. The feelings you shared with us Doc made me extremely sad but extremely happy at the same time. Sad for the loss you have experienced and that all of us have experienced in our lives, but also happy that your good friends life still flows through you and that all of us had the opportunity to meet him and experience the bond you two had. Life is measured by the relationships you make and the special time you get to spend with them not by anything else.

Obviously your friend as served his purpose considering his memory has lead you to this stage and allowed you to bring so much joy and laughter to many different people and build such a great community. He has blessed us all through you and the passion you put forth in creating this site. I am inspired by your story and wish you nothing but success and happiness in the New Year, you deserve nothing less.

Everyone have a very Merry Christmas!
