Being a dyed-in-the-wool video game enthusiast means having your hopes dashed again and again.** And when you think that the major studios can’t dash your hopes any further….dash.* So when you hear about Xbox’s $100 Wireless N adapter or that Activision’s Bobby Kotick is actively out to “take the fun out of video game design”, you start to expect it.** It just gets to the point where you become not only jaded, but you start to “plan for the worst and hope for the best”.

When Sony announced the PSP Go was not going to have a UMD (Universal Media Disk) drive, people were happy to be getting away from the format, but it left a lot of PSP enthusiasts wondering what they were going to do with their old UMDs if they couldn’t be used in the new system.

Then, some malicious bastard over at Sony whispered to some game journalist somewhere that they were considering having a type of game turn-in process; you could put your old UMDs under your pillow at night, and the next morning, the UMD Fairy will have left vouchers under your pillow for a 1-to-1 download.

Of course, the logistical aspects of such a program would cause Sony’s entire accounting division to simultaneously shoot blood out of their eyes, so when I saw that Sony announced that there would be no trade in program, I guess I have to say that I wasn’t particularly surprised.* Just yet again disappointed.

So, for those of you who have a stack of soon to be outdated UMDs, I thought of some ideas on how they could be used when you eventually get a PSP Go (now laughably being referred to as the “PSP No”).

1) Take them to Gamestop and try to sell them for six cents a piece. *Get laughed out of the store by the associates.

2) Glue them face up on a cheap hardwood table, then layer a sheet of glass over them.* Voila, instant video game art and a pretty neat-o table.

3) Take them to your local gun club and sell them as miniature skeet discs for skeet shooters.

4) Find an employee of Sony and start mailing your old UMDs to them at their house.* Write a handwritten letter pretending not to know there is no turn in program and explain to them that you want him to go into work and “make you a new one” for your PSP Go.

5) Chain mail armor, only replace the “chain” with “UMD cases”.* That’ll stop a blade!

6) A stack of UMD cases can make great coasters you can use at your next party; what a great ice breaker, and no nasty “drink rings” on your Ikea furniture!

7) Start a theme restaurant with a quirky name like McGamers or Jonesy Fluffnstuffs or Sony McScrewedMes, instruction booklets and cases to cover your walls, and use the UMDs for your servers’ “flair” on their multicolored suspenders. License plates and stuff deer heads are so 90s!

Hey, these are just a few ideas on things you can do, but the world is your playground.
