While the purists amongst our readership might argue that the price drop on the PS2 preceded 2007, what cannot be argued is that the impact of that price drop was felt well into this calendar year. With sales of the PS3 lagging early on, the PS2 kept chugging along, with a slimmer, lighter design, tiny price tag, and more available games than any other console in history. While many saw the drop as a defensive move against Microsoft’s Xbox 360, others still claim it was meant to make the PS2 the no-brainer consolation prize for the thousands of people who searched in vain for a Wii this year.

Personally, I can’t bring myself to play last gen games anymore. I sold my PS2 on January 8th to a guy named Fritz in Holland. I got enough for it and my entire game collection to buy two new games for my Xbox 360 and a large “Original” at Philly Connection. I forgot to tell Fritz that sometimes you have to tap it on the table to get it to turn on. Well, now you know Fritz.
The PS2’s incredible sales stamina checks in at number 100 on the Sarcastic Gamer Top 100 Gaming Moments of 2007.

The PS2 still has some legs, too: it outsold the PS3 in November by NPD numbers.

I was working at a GameStop last year through earlier this year, and I saw firsthand how insanely the PS2 sold at the 129 price point. Last holiday our store couldn't keep it in stock, even though we'd get 50 unit shipments every Sunday and Wednesday...the only thing we had was 360's. Its easy to imagine it still selling, and selling well. Most of the people that came in the (North Philly) store I worked at would pick up Madden '04 with an incredulous look, and say "Daaaamn, Madden's only 8 bucks? It just came out this summer!"

Then they'd buy that and like, Orphen: Scion of Sorcery.

My point is there are a TON of people who aren't on the cusp of the industry and are more than happy to play a used copy of Red Faction if its only 5 bucks with their shiny new PS2 slim.

I can imagine if I sold my PS2 thinking I'd be able to play all the games on my PS3 only to find out that I couldnt AND there were no games for the PS3 I'd be quite tempted back

I really don't know how this is a suprise, you can get it for 70$ it has the largest gaming library on any console, and everyone can cheaply mod, without having to worry about warranty issues since its only 70$

I was guilty of buying a PS2 last Christmas so I could play God of War and RE4. I had one a few years back but when it died I bought a Xbox. Now it's fun to go back and play some of the old games.
