Top Gaming Moment # 92: November 13th, 2007
Recommended System Requirements:
OS – Windows XP / Vista
Processor – Intel Core 2 DUO @ 2.2GHz or AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+
Memory – 2.0 GB RAM
GPU – NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS/640 or similar
Source: EA Store (http://eastore.ea.com/servlet/ControllerServlet?Action=DisplayPage&Env=BASE&Locale=en_US&SiteID=ea&id=ProductDetailsPage&productID=77033800), SarcasticGamer (http://sarcasticgamer.com/wp/index.php/2007/11/review-of-the-reviews-of-crysis.html)
The days of single core CPU’s and 1GB of RAM are over, and no game hammered this point home like Crytek’s DX10 bad boy, Crysis. Although most hardcore PC gamers were not surprised at all to see the high system requirements required to play Crysis on high settings, most casual gamers practically lost their lunch after learning their 3 year old, generic gaming rigs couldn’t hack it.
Crysis set the bar not only for DX10 graphics (the best IMO to date), but for declaring loud and clear that the next technology jump in PC gaming was upon us. While most pro/hardcore gamers had moved on to dual core CPU’s and 2GBs of RAM, (hello, that has been standard for years) the majority of gamers have balked at the prospect of upgrading their PC’s to play Crysis (as recent sales have shown rather clearly).
Requiring the uber pricey Vista OS to enable DX 10, an 8 series Nvidia card, dual core CPU and 2GB’s of RAM, Crysis pushed PC gaming rigs and players’ wallets to the breaking point.
While Crysis has not been a financial blockbuster (but still my game of the year), it has given the PC gaming world a very clear wake up call in two ways. First, a jump start in terms of what kind of tech will be needed to enjoy the next generation of PC games and an amazing game, if your willing to cough up the cash.
Maximum PWNAGE! Now for only $2,000.00 Dollars.
That’s why Crysis’ crazy requirements check in at number 92 in our top 100 Gaming moments of 2007!
