No, I’m not talking about my evil alter ego. This guy was infamous in PSP circles.

There’s lots of controversy surrounding psp homebrew. Basically homebrew is user-made software that allows the psp to do things Sony hardware designers never intended. You could use your PSP as a remote, websurf while listening to music, and even play old school emulator titles (like Snes and Genesis games.)

Unfortunately this software also made PSP piracy a snap.

For many gamers, the ability to copy PSP games onto their memory cards, making the UMDs unnecessary, was almost too great of a temptation to ignore.

“Dark Alex” was largely responsible for making all this possible. His “custom firmwares” for the psp allowed gamers to do all sorts of these cool and/or nefarious activities. No matter how many times Sony would try to patch things, he would find a way around them.

Then in July, he suddenly announced he would continue his work no longer.
Maybe Sony hired him?

If true, it’s probably be one of the smartest decisions they’d ever made.
That’s why Dark Alex’s retirement checks in at number 84 in our top 100 Gaming moments of 2007!

The best part is that the M33 team that took over turned out to be just Dark Alex pretending to be Russian ^_^
