View Full Version : Cirque Du Freak
notthevictim 10-24-2009, 06:23 PM Ok, I've read and loved all 12 books of Darren Shan's Cirque Du Freak series and saw the new movie last night. I really liked the movie but it didn't follow the books as close as I'd hoped. The critics reviews really turned me off but I disagree with most of them. I just wish some of the big actors and actresses had bigger parts, the snake boy was only in a couple scenes and I hoped they would flesh him out a bit more (no pun intended)!

The movie didn't follow the movie... lolwut
Some friends saw it last night, weren't impressed cept by one guy, John C. Reilly. Not going to see it judged on their views
Parky105 10-25-2009, 07:24 AM Saw this yesterday, not as good as the books...not a total disappointment though
MrWooT 10-25-2009, 07:30 AM Dude i never read books, but a couple years ago my friend she made me read the book first book and eventually i finished the whole series. but i never knew there was a movie out. gotta check it out. i still don't read books for fun Cirque du freak is an exception.
Cheese 10-25-2009, 07:38 AM I've read the whole series which is why I won't see the film. It doesn't look great and all I've heard about it is how it doesn't even follow the books. Which is the whole point of a movie based on a book.
AssassinsClaw 10-25-2009, 10:55 AM ive read the whole series and most likely will see it at some stage, but im not expecting great things from it, seeing as book to film transitions are usually crap :undecided:
also doesn't help that its one of my favourite book series's :undecided:
BlueDubs 10-25-2009, 11:13 AM Eh, might catch it as a rent on DVD/ Blu-ray when it comes out based on a few initial reviews I've seen.
I've also read all the books, and have been wondering if/how they are going to do the extremely dark turn the last few books take?
TinyButDeadly 10-25-2009, 11:21 AM DARREN SHAN'S BOOKS ARE THE BEST THING EVAR !!!!!
But for the film I have heard bad things about it. It does not follow the books and has poor acting (Apparantly) I will probably go see it with AssassinsClaw sometime.
If you have not read a single book from either series (Demonata, Saga of Darren Shan) I definately recommend it.

Actually Steve is pretty dark in the movie, won't go into detail (spoilerz). It's pretty creepy. John C. Reilly I thought was the best actor in the movie, and I liked the comedy as well. I think if it was as dark as the books it would be boring and really hard to follow for newcomers. Mr. Tiny wasn't really explained and the little person transformation thing was very different but cool too!
Oh, and is the Demonata as good as Cirque Du Freak? I did a book report on the first book and read most of the Second but never really got into it like I did with Cirque.
Edit:
Oh and I also really liked how they did the little people, but I don't get how Harkat's gonna be able to talk later though.
Vault Dweller 10-25-2009, 07:21 PM John C. Reilly for the win.
Might be a good antidote for those sick of the teen-glam vampire BS that seems to be the trendy thing right now. (I saw a t-shirt while walking [hastily, I might add] by the local Hot Topic with a glampire saying "get bit". You know something is officially dead and soulless when it appears on a t-shirt in Hot Topic.)
Which reminds me, I want to see Zombieland.
ThePianoMan 10-26-2009, 03:11 AM Which reminds me, I want to see Zombieland.
Good by itself, comedic, lotsa zombies, quite entertaining really, but don't get high hopes. Go in wanting to see Zombie massacres, not an enlightening, engaging film
Vault Dweller 10-26-2009, 03:17 AM Well, "zombies" and "enlightening" don't exactly go hand in hand, so if Zombieland doesn't blow my paradigm, I won't be disappointed. ;)

You have a point. I like this
So... on topic then... does anyone have a short synopsis of the film?

Short synopsis
Good vampires fight bad vampires .
Long synopsis
There's quite a good one on wikipedia, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cirque_du_Freak:_The_Vampire%27s_Assistant

You should really read the rest of the saga of darren shan series because it gets really good especially the last 5/6 books.
Yes the demonata is as amazing as the saga of darren shan series but i would say the demonata is for older readers that the darren shan saga. It is more gruesome and more descriptive than the saga but equally as good as each other.

indeed, on both accounts!
strika234 10-26-2009, 04:33 PM meh.
i prefer demonata
AssassinsClaw 10-26-2009, 05:44 PM meh.
i prefer demonata
well their more different than you realise so im not suprised that you prefer one series over another, though they're bothe equally epic in my book (or books in this case)
photomaster94 10-26-2009, 06:16 PM read the books no interest in the movies
TamarindLAZ 10-26-2009, 07:24 PM I don't even want to watch this abomination.
Why did they have to ruin the books???

I know, from what I saw in the trailer (I might check it out on HBO) it doesn't go well with the books, and that really brust my bubble. Plus, it seems they are trying to milk out the seris, I mean I saw a Manga verison of Cirque de Freak at borders! I'm surprise they didn't make a game for it!
Jarrett 10-28-2009, 07:46 PM Loved the book series, (as well as the Demonata series) but the movie looks awful and cheesy as hell.
I've always thought that the guy who played the hook handed man in the Series of Unfortunate Events movie would be AWESOME as Dr. Crepsley, but John C. Reily seems like an awful choice.
Ala Douche 10-28-2009, 10:18 PM for a movie with FIVE academy award nominations between the supporting actors, i was not impressed. i hope this kills the career of the main kid before it really begins.
