View Full Version : Activision vs. EA

My roommate and I were having this discussion, and he says that Activision is better, which I guess is possible, but I've noticed a rise in EA's "street cred".
I know that all the COD fans will obviously say Activision, but I've noticed that a good majority of their products fly by my head without even a first glance, yes, even COD: MW2 didn't really look all that stunning to me(yes I'm a PC gamer, bring on your hatred).
I say that EA is better now, they used to be bottom of the barrel, but they have steadily won my love, especially with games like Mass Effect(the PC version), L4D, Rock Band, Dragon Age, all the Sports games(no, I don't play sports games, but when I do, I am always surprised the amount of detail and complexity put into those games), Crysis, Dead Space, the list goes on.
What do you think?

I prefer most of the other publishers over the "big two". If I had to pick one, I would take EA. EA does have bioware...

My favorite is probably ubisoft. (Prince of Persia, Tom Clancy games, etc.)

It's funny, as I used to be vehemently opposed to EA, mainly due to them getting some really bad press over their treatment of employees, coupled with some really lousy games. That said, over the last couple of years, they've put out some decent stuff (and bought up some small studios that I really like), so they've moved back to "neutral" in my eyes. I'm still probably going to go with Bethesda as my number one pick though.

Of these two... EA. Their change in the top has really made changes for the better that I can tell. Granted, Ill take Zenimax over either though (they have iD... nuff said).

Activision, on the other hand, has been noted for butching MW2, sueing EA over publishing rights they gave up when they hung the idea of Brutal Legend, AND dropped SEVERAL almost finished games (including Ghostbusters) in favor of sequels to Guitar Hero and Spyro. That says all I need to right there...

Also, I will give dubious honors to Ubisoft as well for a few reasons:

1) between the imagine and babyz series on the DS and Wii, they are SINGLE HANDEDLY doing more damage to the systems in the view of hard core gamers then ANYONE else.
2) they are another blame piracy group, when they sell a game on PC 6 months after they do on console and everyone with any interest already bought the game.

Sorry, Ubisoft SUCKS.

I prefer EA over Activision, mainly because Activision really only has the CoD series(the GH series hasn't been good since GH2), whereas EA has their Sports games(I only play the NHL series), Bioware and several new franchises from this generation that have been good(Dead Space, Boom Blox and a few others).

I wouldn't say that, EA might have made a lot of mistakes in the past but recently they have been getting better.

EA is a much improved company from the "ol' days" where gamers would spit on the floor at the mention of them. Activision may be the worst thing to happen to gaming since Jack Thompson. I choose EA because they now own BioWare which is probably my favorite developer. I also love Bethesda, but there were too many questionable publishers in the "All other" catagory.

Errr, you guys have seen what EA has brought to the table and what Activision has, haven't you?

Maybe 3 or 4 years ago, activision may have been held in slightly higher regard, but EA in the last 2 years, well, Burnout Paradise, Dead Space, Mirror's Edge, Dragon Age: Origins etc? Pinnacles of their respective genres, outstanding experiences, that activision would never care about.

Yes EA leans on franchise sequels as much as Activision, with things like Need for Speed. But they are now also taking risks, and giving people experiences that they really want, rather than the same shit every five seconds.

Activision, Modern Warfare, which they are now butchering, and there are rumours of a 3rd development studio being set up to make CoD games, so they can churn out probably 2 a year. At least 1 new Guitar Hero every year, and they just get worse and worse, especially when they bring out 2 or more, like aerosmith, metallica and now van halen. They are trying to destroy the core of PC gaming, they charge for everything, and they suck ass.

So yes, Ea are better, Activision can go to hell, although, Bobby Kotick is the Devil, so i guess they are bringing hell to us really

Between the 2, EA.

Valve was my favorite, but they dont support Mac/Sony, so I no longer have any ties to them anymore. So sadly, I will miss HL2: Episode 3 when it comes out early 2018.

I dont really have a favorite right now I guess.

John lassiter is now a big deal over at disney, and one of the things he's responsible for is stopping all those sequels to time honoured and beloved films like bambi 2 or simba's pride, stuff like that.

He argued that by putting out films like this, it was ruining what people expected from the company. It likely cost the company billions, but ultimately kept it relevant.

Why the **** don't Activision have anyone on staff like that?

How am I a fanboy? I was only pointing out the fact that he was ignorant to the titles that were previously released by Ubisoft. In no way shape or form am I a fanboy. Proud owner of a 360, PS3 and a PSP with over 100 titles from a variety of developers.

Oh let's see... because I dared to say Ubisoft sucks, you decided I was inbred and a moron... on that alone... I'd say you earned the title.

Btw, you didnt mention anything I wasn't aware of. I just dont give a damn... one series is just that... and Assassin's Creed was the perfect example of what Im talking about. They sold it 6 months later on one platform then screamed piracy when it didnt sell. It was stupid, it was scapegoating, and a perfect example of why they suck.

Cause a whole 1 (ok 2 if you include your holy Assassin's Creed) series makes a company, right?

Nevermind the constant pile of crap in the form of Imaginz and Babyz they spew out on Wii and DS (hell their port of Assassin's Creed for DS is PART of that pile.. it was that bad).

Nevermind the DRM behavior on PC they STILL haven't made good on. (Farcry 2 still has limited installs with no way to get them back... Im pretty sure Assassin's Creed does too.)

NEVERMIND the scapegoating when they dont make sales on PC... you know, despite the early announcement of insane requirements on a game everyone already played months ago.

No... they are still a good gaming company... sure...

Those games are for children, and children play them. I don't expect people on this forum to have played those games, unless they have a child. They are simple, easily made games for a reason. Children cannot play games that are as in depth as most 'next gen' games are. So your comment is useless.

I have played assassins creed and Far cry 2 on the PC and they seemed fine.

So you didn't enjoy splinter cell? What about rainbow six? Or ghost recon?

Really though, why are you arguing with me? I only stated that they make good quality games that are innovative. I remember when splinter cell launched on original xbox, I was blown away.

Grow up and stop fuming on forums.

You get mad that they made games for children, but there is a clear target market. Maybe you need to re think what I was saying and come back with an intelligent reply.

You clearly don't know what you're talking about when you state that Ubisoft has 1 series of video games.

From a business standpoint it obviously benefits the company to release the game 6 months later on PC, or they wouldn't have done it. They have done the market research, and they make the decisions. The company has a marketing team for a reason.

I enjoy games made by all developers on all platforms, as long as they're entertaining. I enjoy the Tom Clancy series and that is why I stated Ubisoft as my favourite developer. I won a contest a while back where I was able to visit Montreal and tour their studio, I was impressed. I enjoy shooters as my favourite genre, and the Ghost Recon and Splinter Cell series as one of my favourite (not so much Assassins or Rainbow) The games they've made that I've played are fun and I have been satisfied enough to continue to purchase each game from the series I enjoy.

Enough with your anger, go beat a punching bag.

Those games are for children, and children play them. I don't expect people on this forum to have played those games, unless they have a child.

Which is part of the problem. They release NOTHING ELSE on DS, and little else on Wii. They are literally what EVERYONE complains about for those systems! UBISOFT!

I have played assassins creed and Far cry 2 on the PC and they seemed fine.

They might have been, they might not have been... but that is HARDLY my complaint! Listen before you defend against thin air.

The DRM on Far Cry 2 was at the very least abusive to the PC gamer... in fact in the same way EA was in hot water for... but at least EA gave us downloadable programs to get our installs back (why I forgive them). What has Ubisoft done?

Assassin's Creed might have done the same, but at the very least, they sold the game months later, then when the sales were down (duh...) they blamed piracy, not their own stupid choice to not sell while Assassin's Creed was the shiney thing the gamers of the world were looking at.

So you didn't enjoy splinter cell? What about rainbow six? Or ghost recon?

Nope nope and nope. Only Tom Clancy game that even looked tempting to me was End War. Im not a fan.

Really though, why are you arguing with me? I only stated that they make good quality games that are innovative.

No, I believe you flung insults because I dared dislike your beloved developer.

Grow up and stop fuming on forums.

Says the guy who spewed names at me when I dared insult his beloved developer....

You get mad that they made games for children, but there is a clear target market. Maybe you need to re think what I was saying and come back with an intelligent reply.

Keep dreaming fanboi... I made my points against them. If they wanted to go console exclusive, that's all fine and good... but if they want to spew crap on any platform they DO support, they are bad... sorry... they are bad.

I really don't have anything else to say. You're not worth my time. Millions of gamers enjoyed those series and just because you don't like them does not mean they are not quality games. The DS and WII are much more limited to game developing than PS3/360.

Im not sure you had anything to begin with.

You're not worth my time.

And yet you keep coming back...

Millions of gamers enjoyed those series and just because you don't like them does not mean they are not quality games.

Not arguing their quality at all.. get the crap out of your eyes and read what I am saying. I dont like Tom Clancy games.. Im arguing ONE series does not a good gaming company make.

Example... I LOVE Phantasy Star.... but I would be a fool to think Sega as a whole rocks. They just have one really good series.

The DS and WII are much more limited to game developing than PS3/360.

And this gets a big huge So? I mean, look at the power we were running last gen... it doesnt equal bad games. Sorry, but this is fail.

sorry I do not format correctly :S

Well played Diortem. I pretty much agree with you completely about Ubisoft.

As far as EA and Activision go, I pick EA. They've made an effort to change their reputation as the most evil thing in the world, and it's been working. Activision is just Satan incarnate.

EA , they allow there developers to make new IP's (Dead Space,Mirrors Edge,Saboteur) unlike Activision who are just trying to milk there franchises new GH and CoD Everyear wow what a great business plan good job

Over the last 2-3 year EA has been becoming better while Activsion are just becoming one of the worst Gaming publishers ever

When I first saw this thread, the first thing that popped into my head was 'Which is most evil?'; so I'll answer that instead.

In my opinion Actiblizz have really surpassed themselves when it comes to being evil, money crazed villains with hearts of pure stone.
I wouldn't be at all surprised to find that the CEO sits on a throne made of money stuck together with the dried tears of people that were stamped on because they were not profitable enough; whilst stroking an equally evil cat that secretly plans to take over the universe once its master has become powerful and rich enough.

We have seen how even the most popular of franchises, namely the Call of Duty series, has been dragged down by the corporate monster in the anger and feeling of betrayal by even the most die hard of PC CoD4 players, who have received not the sequel to what is widely regarded as one of the best multiplayer FPS games of all time, but a lacklustre console port.

FallenHeero
11-22-2009, 12:21 PM
personally i think EA have cleaned up quite a bit from there previous strategy, they used to be quite evil but I gotta admit they've improved quite a bit by offering new IP's and actually letting games develop properly by letting the studios have enough time to develop a decent game instead of activisions yearly model for most of its franchises. They've ruined guitar hero by introducing so many guitar hero games and they've saturated the formula of tony hawks to a point where nobody cares about it anymore. They've really gone down in my opinion but then again you could say that EA capitilises on the sports franchise so they can afford to do this. Really EA is just the lesser of 2 evils...

The Bigs and the sequel, bioshock, borderlands, and even parts of oblivion. Face it, 2K is a fantastic studio and I love their games.
