It’s no secret that Sony took a HUGE risk when they decided to put a cell processor inside their PS3. They’ve been made fun of relentlessly, even called idiots for that decision. So far they do deserve to be called idiots, because that decision to take such a huge leap forward in technology has caused them to lose the exact thing that made the PS2 such a success: The Exclusives.

GTA, Devil May Cry, Assassin’s Creed, and Monster Hunter are just a few of the big name exclusives that Sony has lost over the past year. Many people say that it is because of the low sales numbers, but I think it has a lot more to do with the cell processor that Sony chose to put in the PS3. There are several developers who have come right out and said that it was a stupid move by Sony because it is so different and difficult to program for.

I guess only time will tell if taking a huge leap technologically will pay off in the long run for Sony, but for right now all it has done is hurt them.

That’s why PS3 losing several exclusives is #33 on Sarcastic Gamer’s Top 100 Gaming moments of 2007.

Why do people keep on lumping GTA into the mix. GTA wasn't exclusive because of the PS3... Rockstar decided to go multiplatform before that when they saw how big the game actually was...

PS2 had the same complaints when it first came out but the sales were better for the console.

I think the problem is that it is hard to develop for AND the install base is still not justified to do an exclusive. The third party exclusive is dead between PS3 and 360.
