Back in August, gamers were still gawking at the PS3’s high price tag, but the Wii was selling like hotcakes. Microsoft realized the time to slash the red ink was upon them.

They needed to take things up a notch in the console war, and take it up they did.

Read more about what they did after the jump!

In a bold move, Microsoft slashed the prices of all Xbox 360’s bundles by about $50. This made a big difference in their marketing strategies as this made the cheapest bundle only about $30 higher than the Wii.
Now if they’d just lower the price on that damn 120gb drive.

That’s why the Xbox 360 price drop checks in at #39 on Sarcastic Gamer’s Top 100 Gaming moments of 2007!

LuckyEMS commented on the front page post against my criticism that this "price drop" isn't a price drop.

If you currently use an optical cable for your 5.1 surround sound, then this price drop isn't a price drop for you. You have to spend $50 for an adapter to use an optical audio cable... and amazingly, the price drop was $50 for the Premium/Pro. So for millions of people out there that want 5.1 surround that don't have HDMI capable receivers, this equates to NO price drop.

Sure, there are fringe people, with HDMI-equipped receivers, or people that only want stereo sound, but the VAST majority will want 5.1 surround and don't have HDMI-equipped receivers.

Microsoft should have made the Arcade pack the same price as the Wii for this holiday. I thought the price drop was not that great to begin with. Easy for me to say but the first price drop should be $100.
