The Darkness. A mediocre shooter with a gimmick. A game about a guy that can summon demons to kill people. Sounds cool, right? Well, it sounds good, but the game came off as rather lackluster. Damn if I didn’t play that sucker all the way to the end.

Read on to find out how the hell the Darkness made our countdown, after the jump!

In the game you play a two-bit wanna be mafioso named Jackie, voiced by the miscast Michael Madsen. In the game, you attempt to rise through the ranks, but end up getting double crossed by your uncle.

You also have a devoted girlfriend named Jenny. In fact, you spend the first two hours, or so of the game with her, talking to her, watching movies with her. You end up liking Jenny and feeling for their messed up relationship.

Then Bam! She gets kidnapped and you’ve got to save her. Only … you don’t.

The reason why this made the countdown was the sheer “WTF” value of the moment. Picture this: About a quarter of the way through the game, you find Jenny, being held by your evil uncle. He’s got a gun to Jenny’s head. You see all this through a window. You’re expecting to crash in and save her, except…?

You can’t move.

Your Darkness powers restrain you. They hold you in place while you watch your Uncle taunt you mercilessly before shooting her in the head. Jenny dies instantly. Your powers betrayed you to instill anger and a thirst for vengeance that the demonic powers needed to take over your soul.

Guess what, it actually works. I was pissed. Even though the game was only mediocre, I still wanted to finish the game so I could exact some much needed payback on his candyass.

So, for unexpectedly killing off my video game girlfriend and pissing me off, the Darkness’ “WTF” Moment lands at number 14 on Sarcastic Gamer’s Top 100 Gaming Moments of 2007.

You liked shadowrun over the darkness? I really liked the darkness. It was sweet using the powers to kill people.

I was really pissed when Jenny died. I actually sat with her and watched the entire movie in her apartment. (PS3 version had the entire to kill a mockingbird movie in the game. How sweet is that?)

So yeah... when she died, I wanted nothing more than to kill the damn uncle.

Everyone seemed to complain about the demo. I had never tried the demo, but i went and rented the game. The game wasn't that bad, i enjoyed it for what it was, and the gate part that everyone complained about in the demo took me 2 seconds to do. Everyone seemed to be giving their rating of the game just fromfrom playing the demo and getting stuck at that fence part.

Not only was Jenny's death a WTF moment, but so was the ending. I didn't understand it and i still don't. Is he dead? Is he alive? Was it all the generic "oh it's just a dream" ending? I don't know what it was, but i'm guessing they are making a sequel.
