I don’t think it comes as a surprise to anyone that the Wii was the #1 hottest selling item this holiday season. The worst part about that was not everybody who wanted one was able to get one, because they were in such high demand. These things were flying out of stockboys’ arms before they could even put them on the shelves.
Who is to blame for all this chaos? Nintendo? Retailers? Casual gamers?
My answer is all of the above to a greater, or lesser extent. The one most at fault was obviously Nintendo, because they didn’ t ramp up production soon enough to meet demand. They should have been stockpiling the Wii’s for months in order to meet the inevitable holiday demand.
Then you have reports of some Best Buy stores purposely withholding Wii stock in warehouses for no good reason.
Then there’s the casual gamers. Oh how they’ve become a hot topic lately. Thanks to Nintendo, gamers have had to deal with a whole new branch of video game players and games. These casual gamers are mainly the ones who have been trying to hunt down the elusive Wii’s and causing all of the shopping chaos in stores. All those soccer moms trying to get Billy that trophy gift for Christmas.
Ridiculous.
For most of us gamers though, we just don’t really see the huge appeal of the Wii and that is what caused Doc to write this song:
I Hate This… (The Wii Song) (http://sarcasticgamer.com/wp/index.php/2007/07/i-hate-this-wii-song.html)
That’s why the ridiculous Wii shortages comes in at #10 on the Sarcastic Gamer Top 100 Gaming Moments of 2007.
