View Full Version : Quick Question About "martini time"
Andrew 01-06-2008, 11:06 AM So, how does this work?
You all say something "funny", and everyone "laughs".
After dave takes us out someone says cue the music.
So is there like a boombox or ipod with speakers hooked up playing the martini time song?
Or is it all pre done before the show and everyone says what they are going to say and doc later syncs the joke with the song audio.
If that is not the case then,
how do you guys time it perfectly every time as well?
Can someone please explain this to me
Chexd 01-06-2008, 11:46 AM Most likely they do it at the end of the show and just put the music over after in post production. I think. There is no timing as such. The music then just gets faded down when someone talks :)
Thats my guess anyway.

Im gonna have to go with Chexd. Doc able to edit stuff like that because he's got a Mac. ;)
Yousty 01-06-2008, 01:08 PM You gotta remember that Doc works for a radio station so he knows almost everything there is to know about audio manipulation and he has access to all sorts of expensive audio equipment. He can pretty much do whatever he wants.
That is why the SG podcast is probably one of the most professionally sounding podcasts on the internet.:)

He is a master of the air waves. :p
Chrono 01-06-2008, 01:33 PM no he is the airwaves
Andrew 01-06-2008, 04:12 PM no he is the airwaves
Ah wisdom..
Yeah that makes sense Yousty.
I wish i could see a picture of the "team" with names over them so i know what they look like.
or whos who.
ki0365 01-06-2008, 04:23 PM In the live one they managed it pretty good though so was that without editing? Also, on the picture front, I'd appreciate that also - or maybe the next live podcast make it a video one??

Lono_Lives 01-06-2008, 07:37 PM we record the podcast then doc adds the music in post production along with the sound effects, GCN teaser, opener, bumpers and ending. the audio tracks are synched up and the music is just another layer that is edited into the mix. It's just a computer file that is placed between the "cue the music" and the actuall jokes.
V3NOM 01-07-2008, 07:29 PM Do you guys decide what your jokes are beforehand? They usually all follow a certain theme -- maybe the theme is decided on but you don't hear the actual jokes until Martini Time?
Is it always planned for someone to have a lame one, or does it just usually happen that way?

I think someone will come up with a lame joke and they say "That's the one."
iPlayPC 01-07-2008, 07:43 PM no he is the airwaves
No he is the Angel of Airwaves (Haha lame joke Angels and Airwaves get it)

The podcast is like a hot dog. The more you know about how it's made, the less you like them.
We can't give up all the trade secrets.... Sorry.

Does anyone want to know what is in Jello???
Anyway... they won't be able to video the pod cast because only 2 of them are in the studio. The others are over the phone all over the US. This is one of the reasons why I love this cast so much. All differnet sides of the US in one show. Kinda cool when you think about it.
Doc does an amazing job putting the show together. I put Doc's name in a Chuck Norris joke and it worked out quite well.
ChorleyDominic 01-09-2008, 06:34 AM I was gonna start a new thread but I guess it all comes under the umbrella of podcast....
What happened to the news with Paul Christy?!?!?!

we're working on it!
ki0365 01-09-2008, 11:47 AM I was saying next live podcast, as in a new years special or something could be a video podcast. They all flew over if I heard right.
Chexd 01-09-2008, 01:15 PM Im gonna have to go with Chexd.
haha! you sound as if that is something to be ashamed of!:p
Totally agree about the professionalism of the Podcast. The production value really has to be one of the highest I have encountered!

Can you blame him? ;)
But yeah you are right for once. :p
This podcast is easily one of the best sounding ones.

...Thats the last time im gonna give you a lift in my Mongoose.
YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN!
animathias 01-09-2008, 11:50 PM Easily one of the best sounding podcasts. I was listening to episode 50 of the X3F Fancast today (great work on the bumper, guys!), and they were playing older clips. Around 20 or so, it sounded pretty bad, while the SG podcast has sounded professional from day one.
ChorleyDominic 01-10-2008, 04:59 AM we're working on it!
The dude's a legend - i look forward to his return....!
Jordan the hobo 01-10-2008, 09:03 AM Personally i don't really like the paul christy parts. I just hate the fact anncouncer cheesy voice thing.no offense. But it is very well edited and i bet it probably takes doc at least 1-2 hourse to edit it. Probably cause they talk like sailors.

I'm pretty sure that you're the only one that doesn't like the Paul Christy parts...
as for the editing, that's not the type of editing that we do. We add stuff to the podcast. not take it away. What you hear is what we record. When we talk editing, we mean adding the opening, adding music behind the voice tracks, adding bumpers between segments, that kind of editing.
VinDali 01-10-2008, 03:15 PM You just don't ask a magician how he does his tricks.
Paul Christy rocks. He adds creditability to the podcast. And you gotta love the straight announcer voice delivering crazy headlines. Loved the one show where he asks why he does the reads. LOL
You should see if you can get Bill Curtis to fill in once.
Chrono 01-10-2008, 03:30 PM Paul Christy is one of my fav parts of the entire podcast I cant wait for that return anyone who says different is talking crazy talk
strika234 01-10-2008, 03:52 PM who writes the paul christy stuff? I wonder...
Wizard 01-10-2008, 06:01 PM The staff?
I didn't like that time when Paul Christy kinda broke the fourth wall that one time when he was like "WTF?" at his news.
Rekenmachine 01-10-2008, 06:48 PM Why do you people want to know everything about the show?
We don't need tons of SG-Podcast-ripp-offs.
The podcast sounds great and is funny ( at rare occasions... ;) ), that's all I need to know.

Waddaya mean? that was awesome :D.
But hey, different people have different taste.
viatrophy 01-10-2008, 07:09 PM Bring back Paul! :D
Duffman X18 01-10-2008, 09:06 PM It's very good for a scripted podcast.:p
naruto20 01-10-2008, 09:32 PM New years martini time ftw I WISH YOU ALL DIE IN A FIRE!!
ShockwaveLover 01-11-2008, 05:19 AM Poor Dave. He is to Doc like Luigi is to Mario. He's always a part of the podcasts (or games) but always plays second fiddle.
(Note: I was going to continue on, comparing Lono to Bowser (fire breathing nasty), and Alex to Peach (damsel in distress), but I figured I didn't need Alex's hurt feelings on my concience.)
strika234 01-11-2008, 07:18 AM well, you failed. Nice comparison though!

Thank you, thank you. I'm here all week.

LMAO. nice...
Ploogle 01-12-2008, 03:02 AM I think you've got it all wrong. I think that Twilight Princess would be a little more accurate here. Doc is like Zelda, always in the title and the star of the game, but never really does anything. Then there's Lono/Link. Both start with L and hog all the attention, coming the the "rescue" of the show. Lono turns into Wolf Lono/Link when he doesn't get enough sleep, and needs Dave/Midna to ride on him until he becomes normal again. BUT, he wouldn't be Wolf Lono/Link if he didn't have Alex/Zant to thank for forcing such upon him. :p

Well thought out! It's a hell of a lot deeper than mine.
