View Full Version : Ipod: The new Gameboy
Inzader 01-08-2008, 10:35 PM I play my Ipod all the time and I just wanted to point out the fact that I'm always playing tetris or Sonic or Bomberman. It goes everywere and you get to play classics and lisen to the sarcastic gamers podcast. Give me your opinon and some games you want to see.
Mallico 01-08-2008, 11:26 PM Well I own an Ipod Touch, and it actually has a Gameboy Advance (Not to mention PSX, and NES) emulator on it lol. Although it`s a little daunting at first to get used to not having physical buttons to press, you get used to it fairly quickly.
I prefer my DS to an Ipod any day, however I still enjoy playing games on my Ipod. A game I particularly enjoy is iPhysics, if you`ve ever heard of Crayon Physics for PC it`s just like that except for Ipod. People regularly release level packs for it, it`s lot of fun.
Emophia 01-09-2008, 01:39 PM No, DS Lite and my PSP are much prefered to my classic to play games...
iPlayPC 01-09-2008, 07:23 PM The iPod isn't a direct competitor to the ds or psp, but it is a competitor.
I love it.
The iPod will never succeed (gaming wise) with anything other than casual games... the interface just isn't there to supper anything more than that (though the iPod Touch does open up some opportunities)...
Brian 01-11-2008, 08:24 AM I only play phase on my ipod!
Ploogle 01-11-2008, 12:18 PM Yeah, the iPod is NOT the new gameboy. Yes, the iPod has some addicting games, but so does my cell phone. The iPod wasn't designed to be or succeed the GB, and doesn't have the controls to have any really good games.

100% Aggreed Jailbreaking FTW
AlmightyEmperor 03-29-2008, 01:48 AM I have only ever played solitaire on my Ipod
EDIT:
100th Post
pr0mqu33n 03-29-2008, 02:46 AM I only play phase on my ipod!
Phase is the most amazing iPod game EVER! Its the only game I play though, because the DS and PSP are just so much better to use!

There's a homebrew app for the DS called Pocket Physics. Basically, you draw red lines which are fixed and blue lines which will be in motion. Then you hit start. Possibly the best homebrew game for the DS.
I don't think the iPod will compete directly with the DS until they have a major redesign and get rid of the clickwheel, which isn't ideal for playing games. I don't think they'll do that though, as the clickwheel is easily approachable. So Apple might keep their noses out of the handheld market.
thedoctor248 03-29-2008, 06:03 AM I can see this...I listen to a lot of podcasts while relaxing in bed, and invariably indulge in a game of Klondike while doing so. It must be even more fun on an iTouch or iPhone (I know it's not an iPod, but it is very similar to an iTouch). However, I am buying a DS to fulfil my handheld gaming requirements, as I feel the need for a dedicated handheld platform.
ShockwaveLover 03-29-2008, 06:18 AM The only trouble with using the Ipod as a platform for gaming is the hugely inflated prices Apple charge for games. $7.59 for Battleships?! You can take your games and [Insert Physically Impossible Act here].
LEGEND 03-29-2008, 03:38 PM I never bought any of the iPod games for my Classic because of the ridiculous price for them.
RatTail 03-30-2008, 12:27 AM I barely ever play any games on my iPod. It would never surpass the DS.
wobyer 04-05-2008, 10:30 PM The iPod will never succeed (gaming wise) with anything other than casual games... the interface just isn't there to supper anything more than that (though the iPod Touch does open up some opportunities)...
totally agree with you. i have only played solitare
Jordan the hobo 04-05-2008, 11:02 PM For the love of god buy peggle for the ipod, Its very addciting. Id like to see a good breakout game.
Mallico 04-07-2008, 03:37 AM I only have an iPod Touch so I can't get Peggle on it. :(
iPod Touch will be getting some interesting games down the line though, Spore for example. I hope it isn't crap.
godslabrat 04-07-2008, 09:50 PM I've played Phase and Sonic... Phase is a brilliant concept within the constraints of the controls, while Sonic is barely playable. The only time I even bother with the games is when I'm stuck somewhere and have absolutely zero else to do. Which, I suppose, means they have their purpose, no matter how small.
Still, the whole time, I'm thinking "Gee, I wish I had my DS."
Samueltehg33k 04-08-2008, 12:21 PM I highly Doubt it id concider the iPhone being somewhat of a gaming platform If you saw from apples SDK they showed of the iphones sixsasixs like control and the touch screen looks like Nintendo and sony might have some ompetetion but i still say Nintendo will still be king :)

But, if you think about it, the iPhone(and Apple)'s primary goal isn't to sell games. That's just something they do on the side. It's like the cell phone game market. It'll never catch up to or surpass Nintendo's or Sony's portable systems, because the two are so different and offer totally different things.
viatrophy 04-10-2008, 12:20 PM One game I would love to see come out on the ipod is Pokemon.
That game is such a great time killer. haha.
Pretty please, someone make it for the jailbroken ipod touch. :)

They have GBA, GB, NES, and SNES emulators for the iPhone/iTouch. I'd suggest looking into those...;) That'd be my main reason for getting one. I don't need 30GB of space on my iPod Video. All I really need is 4-8GB.
wobyer 04-12-2008, 11:25 PM my brother just got chess. and i think it sucks.
Instincts 04-12-2008, 11:41 PM It isnt in the same league as DS or PSP but it is in a market all it's own and it succeeds there, maybe the zune or another music player will bring some games but I don't think they will catch on anytime soon but I might be wrong.
Torreyjs 04-13-2008, 12:14 PM Zune players are the best
Lalizig 04-14-2008, 03:07 AM The iPod as a DS/Gameboy/PSP competitor? Laughable. Phase is fun and all, but I don't play it for very long (only to pass time, like on the train or something). Soon the classic and nano will be obsolete, and everything will move to touchscreen anyway.
Now the iPod Touch and iPhone are already handheld gaming competitors, or was I the only one who watched the Unveiling of the iPhone SDK? (http://www.apple.com/quicktime/qtv/iphoneroadmap/)
Now that I think about it, probably.
....nerd.
For those of you who can't be bothered to watch it, know that Spore is coming to the iPhone.
caddik 04-28-2008, 07:06 AM Me too always playing solitaire on my Ipod.I am very fond of cards so i love to play that game.

You think you're bad? I'm now a registered iPhone developer! Only thing is, I don't have a Mac to program for it on. Those idiots at Apple don't port the code to Windows.
kdawg12 05-05-2008, 09:31 PM dude the ipod will never take over the ds or psp yeah the touch is cool and all but id rather play games on a ds
Waisybabu 05-07-2008, 07:39 AM Look.Its VERY simple.
I agree that the iPod Nano 3G and Classic and Touch and iPhone can play games. But they can never EVER compare to the DS or PSP because the pods have a minimalistic interface. And this interface is mainly used to listening to music, watching videos and making calls.
As for it being the new GBA.That is plain crap. The iPod is simply a toy for non-interactable enterainment.
Hotcooler 05-10-2008, 02:33 AM Dunno about that.. But I believe we just need to wait untill appstore release for Iphone\Ipod and see with what stuff big companies will come up. There may be something inovating. Plus Ihone\Ipod is pretty powerfull platfom. The only problem is lack of buttons... but.. we'll see.
Heck, you don't need those iTunes store games. If you have a 5G, you can put iPod linux on it and really play gba on it. I'm serious. Mario Tennis on the iPod = WIN.
kdawg12 05-18-2008, 01:27 AM uhhhh i would rather just have a gameboy casue ipods are for music not gaming
Hotcooler 05-18-2008, 07:01 AM Geno I'm talking about App store - And those games like Spore, Super monkeyball and stuff like that. Something from Konami, Gameloft, and J. Carmack (Doom ?)
Mallico 05-19-2008, 04:21 PM iPod Touch/iPhone just got a peggle clone (Work in progress atm) called Poddle. You can find it in installer if you want to try it. It sucks right now but it might shape up to be pretty good.
IceKatana X 05-19-2008, 10:02 PM I occasionally play solitaire on my Ipod while listening to music. I'd actually prefer a device made for gaming rather than playing a game on an Ipod but I haven't played any other games other than the ones originally on it.
n00bhunter 05-20-2008, 01:13 AM Seriously,buy Peggle for your Ipod
So freaking addictive
You Won't regret it
I mean who doesn't wanna play a pinball cross breakout game with a unicorn named Bjorn telling you what to do!
kingofnoland 05-22-2008, 03:56 PM I mean who doesn't wanna play a pinball cross breakout game with a unicorn named Bjorn telling you what to do!
last time that happened to me I woke up somewhere I had never been before.
Oh right you meant in the game.
Somehow i dont think the ipod wheel is able to cope with the games,
Now the touch, thats a different matter entirly
