View Full Version : 2008: The Year of the...
ChorleyDominic 01-10-2008, 10:08 AM Tough to say being so early on, but 2008 could be the year of the PS3. Hard to say it, but they could shake things up a bit now with some impressive games.
Hell what am i saying? 360 All the way!
Shane86 01-10-2008, 10:14 AM forgetting a certain nintendo handheld?
ChorleyDominic 01-10-2008, 10:19 AM lol yeah it purpose it sucks... ah maybe i should include it...
firebox 01-10-2008, 10:33 AM I went 360 becasue it's the only console i own.
PopTrogdor 01-10-2008, 10:41 AM i went ps3 as ive owned a 360 and ps3, and the its better, plus with the amount of games coming out, ps3 is alike a phoenix rising from teh ashes.
also you cant say its going to be a consoles year because its the only one you own, you have to take in everything that will happen, and so far ive seen nothing on the 360 that impresses me, and the wii has ssbb and mario kart, then after theres nothing id want from that console
Chrono 01-10-2008, 11:42 AM It is the year of the PS3: DMC 4 GTA IV GT 5 MGS 5 Haze right there you have 5 awesome titles for the PS3 granted only 3 are exclusive 1 has more content on PS3 and 1 has more content on 360 but there will be good playable games for PS3
Chexd 01-10-2008, 11:43 AM Although I think the PS3 will have a good year it will be interesting to see what happens when BT role out their set-top 360s.
Xerofayte 01-10-2008, 11:51 AM Rat
=D vote PC
PacManPolarBear 01-10-2008, 12:07 PM For me, it's a toss up between the PS3 and PC. I think (Roth is whispering in my ear again) the PS3 is going to see a big rise. Basically winning the format war, a few big name titles even I am looking forward too and the fact that Sony has apparently got a more understandable package of development tools for studios and unlike the 360, a free online service that does not crash means PS3 could finally hit its stride. We all laughed when Sony talked about 'long term', but they may just be the ones to get the last laugh.
On the flip you have my favorite medium, the PC. New 9 series video cards, a few games actually using the Physics Processors, DX10 and 10.1 which have already blown graphics on their competing platforms out of the water, Vista will finally get some service packs to make it useful and take advantage of some things IT DOES do amazingly, Quad-Cores that actually have games that can take advantage of that power, huge strides in graphics engines and more. Heck what developers can make with the Crytek engine alone will be amazing. PC gaming tech is already so good that no console can compare, and developers have to 'trim down' what they can actually do to release products on the other platforms.
Right now I still like the 360 for gaming if I had to choose, but besides new games, I see little change in the future. A bigger hard drive and HD-DVD don't mean diddly.
The Wii...well, the Wii is the opposite of everything I look for in a gaming platform. Not knocking it, just not my thing. I think we'll see Nintendo continue to be a money powerhouse and release a bunch more weird pieces of tech and soccer mom games, but whatever.
DS. Stays the same, doubt any big changes will be seen.
PSP has VOIP coming which is baller. God of War is showing how great a PSP can look if dev's actually do the work and not keep porting old titles or making half-breed crossovers (I have the same problem with the DS). I think the PSP will have a strong 2008 season is they can at least match the quality I have already seen on a few titles and expand upon the multitasking power the PSP can dish out with VOIP, homebrew-ish stuff, camera's etc...
Shane86 01-10-2008, 12:48 PM I'd probably say ps3, because so much stuff has been delayed from last year i.e. home, haze, little big planet
Garwalker 01-10-2008, 01:50 PM I'd say the PS3. I'm sure we'll know alot more once E3 hits. Microsoft keeps hinting at games coming out that have not been announced but I'm not sure there is a system seller in that pile. An updated Goldeneye with on line play on XBLA would be big. I still think Little Big Planet, MGS4, GT 5, and possibly God Of War 3 will sell more PS3s than the 360 this year.
I think that it is going to be a very close race this year, but I still have faith in my 360. Their year has started off rough (REAL rough) and Sony is taking advantage and gaining round (thanks to the BR movements)... but I have faith... blind faith, but faith nonetheless...
strika234 01-10-2008, 02:43 PM If haze or killlzone 2 turns out to be the CoD4 killer its hyped to be, than it will be ps3's year
Other wise, maybe the 360 will keep the lead.
The wii has quite a few AAA 1st party titles coming out, though. Don't count them out.
Garwalker 01-10-2008, 03:15 PM 360 will keep its lead. It is too far ahead of the PS3 for it to catch up to it this year. But the PS3 will probably at least when the most consoles sold on a monthly basis in May and beyond. Just not by an overwhelming margin.
strika234 01-10-2008, 03:20 PM but whaty exclusives does the 360 have this yeer?
Chrono 01-10-2008, 03:31 PM If haze or killlzone 2 turns out to be the CoD4 killer its hyped to be, than it will be ps3's year

The wii has quite a few AAA 1st party titles coming out, though. Don't count them out.
Haze is going to be amazing. I think it is COD4+counter-strike+Halo
Bauer22 01-10-2008, 03:39 PM If the PS3 doesn't prove itself this year then I think it's the end of it. I'm supporting the PS3 this year because of its titles and Blu-Ray winning the format war. (Come on HD-DVD fans, time to close up shop) Also LittleBigPlanet looks like an awesome party game (If I had friends:()
strika234 01-10-2008, 03:41 PM I like the fact that you can overdoes guys if your the rebels. I saw a guy in a demo stab an enemy with a knivfe coated in the drug, and he overdosed. He took a grenade, pulled the pin, and stared at it, laughing. This game makes me relaly want a ps3.
Shane86 01-10-2008, 04:42 PM but whaty exclusives does the 360 have this yeer?
fable 2, halo wars, alan wake, too human, splinter cell convinction and more "unannounced"
strika234 01-10-2008, 04:47 PM your right, bt none of them are as super hyped as haze and killzone2
btw, whats alan wake?
SWSilentkiller 01-10-2008, 04:49 PM I think the Wii, solely because of SSBB, ok that might be a little much, but the Smash community is HUGE, some people were probably waiting to buy wiis just for this game, Not to mention this game is going to last a long time, just look at melee that came out a while ago and it's still played to ths day.
Note: I am not a Tournament player for melee, but I plan on becoming one for brawl
Note: I am now undecided
Shane86 01-10-2008, 04:59 PM SilentKiller picks the wii, based purely on one game.
there's a shock
SWSilentkiller 01-10-2008, 05:19 PM Have you ever played Super smash bros. Melee, shane? It is the best game for the Gamecube. It's lasted a lont time and there are Tournaments for it. From what I have seen Brawl promises to be better, however I do realize basing my decision on one game is rather stupid so for now I shall remain undecided.
Shane86 01-10-2008, 06:02 PM Yes I have it, and I have the original smash bros. as well, but there's absolutely no way that the wii will be 2008's best console because of it.
viatrophy 01-10-2008, 06:11 PM I'm saying 360 purely for the fact thats what I'm hoping.
Fable 2 is coming out, That should persuade almost anyone. :p
Although Haze on the ps3 looks awesome.
Stranger411 01-10-2008, 06:41 PM but whaty exclusives does the 360 have this yeer?
Fable 2, Left 4 Dead (and if you say that it is not exclusive because its coming out on PC as well then you have to stop saying that Haze is exclusive for the PS3), Too Human, Lost Odyssey, Ninja Gaiden 2, Halo Wars, and Alan Wake.
Bauer22 01-10-2008, 06:59 PM Left 4 Dead is coming to the PS3 along with the 360 according to EGM's "Decisions 08: Go Multiplatform!" Didn't know it was coming out for it either. Huh:confused:
Mr Eibmoz 01-10-2008, 07:06 PM Software wise, PS3. 360s pretty much exhasted its exclusives last year and any big names are cross platform leaving PS3 with MGS, LBP, Killzone 2 etc.. not to mention Home.
PC i think is going to hit a helluva decline soon. With Crysis and UT being big releases and selling next to nothing you have to wonder how long devs will see the PC as financially viable. Wii will just continue selling shitloads with no software sales. PSP will trundle along in unfair mediocrity. DS will continue to be hit and miss.
Stranger411 01-10-2008, 07:07 PM I just checked Valve's site and they only have it listed as coming out for the 360 and the PC. So I'm going to assume that it is not coming to the PS3 until Valve themselves confirm it.

Yeah when I read it I was " When this happen?". Doesn't really bother me since I got the 360.
Canuck 01-10-2008, 08:34 PM Software-wise, so long as all their 2008 titles are actually released in 2008, I'd go with the PS3, because it has more and bigger exclusives coming this year IMO. Overall, though, it's actually a tie between PS3 and 360. Both systems are doing better and better, and I honestly could not predict at this point which system will do better this year. The 360 still has its fair share of exclusives and big titles, but the countless PS3 delays mean that it has a lot coming this year.

One game doesn't win a console war soley. It takes 3 or 4. The only difference about ssbb is that it is on the Wii which has a wide install base. But still it won't win the console war by itself.

All the Wii really has at this point is SSBB and Mario Kart Wii. After that... well, they've gotta think of something good, cause those are the only 2 good titles that I know of that are announced and have not yet been released. I personally see the Wii cooling down big time in '08.
iPlayPC 01-10-2008, 09:13 PM Even though I'm ashamed (ish) to admit it, 2008 will be the year of the ps3.
Sinfulfate 01-10-2008, 09:17 PM 2008 will be the the Year of the DS. The DS prints money.

Well I guess you could count wii fit, animal crossing wii, no more heroes, final fantasy crystal chronicles 2, there's probably a few more.

That new star wars game (wii remote=lightsaber=geekgasm) and okami, which is coming to wii.
Shane86 01-10-2008, 09:47 PM I'm assuming okami is just a port of the ps2 version? and the light saber game better be good.
ShockwaveLover 01-11-2008, 06:19 AM My god you guys (or gals), you're all thinking small! 2008 is the YEAR OF THE SARCASTIC GAMER!
PopTrogdor 01-11-2008, 06:38 AM Software wise, PS3. 360s pretty much exhasted its exclusives last year and any big names are cross platform leaving PS3 with MGS, LBP, Killzone 2 etc.. not to mention Home.

in all fairness, i do believe you have hit the nail on the head there.
and to all the exclusives coming to the 360, i dont want alan wake or halo wars, but i do want left 4 dead, but i wont miss anything as ill be playing it on the pc, not alot of people will get haze for the pc, so thats not viable, i was excited about too human when i had a 360, but delays, plus the problems with the unreal engine and so on and so forth, kinda gave up caring about that.
cant say im excited about every single exclusive for the ps3, like hot shots golf...i mean wtf is that?! lol, but theres a hell of a lot, plus the multi platforms, ill be a full satisfied gamer this year i feel!
oh and yeh okami is a port, the only good thing extra itll bring is the motion controls, might make it easier or funner, maybe
Garwalker 01-11-2008, 09:59 AM My most anticipated exclusive of the year is Ninja Gaiden 2. The game looks sick and if it's anything like the last one, then it will be the most challenging game of the year. I look forward to getting some tough but not impossible achievements for it.
My second best anticipated exclusive is Little Big Planet even though I don't have a PS3. (Unless they do announce God Of War 3 or Gears of War 2 for Christmas)
Freestyle 01-11-2008, 10:27 AM The PS3 gets my vote. The 360 has some good ones coming out but the PS3's are bigger. Now for the Wii, it actually has some decent games coming out and it will continue to sell like crazy when Wii Fit comes out. Has anybody heard of the Wii game "The Sadness"? It looks pretty good if they get some cool motion control for it. http://wii.ign.com/objects/816/816122.html not much has been said about it though.
Mr Eibmoz 01-11-2008, 10:37 AM cant say im excited about every single exclusive for the ps3, like hot shots golf...i mean wtf is that?!Its only the single best sports series ever! ^_^ Seriously, if I could have MGS or HSG right now, I'd not even have to think about it, it would be Hot Shots all the way.
PacManPolarBear 01-11-2008, 11:40 AM My most anticipated exclusive of the year is Ninja Gaiden 2. The game looks sick and if it's anything like the last one, then it will be the most challenging game of the year. I look forward to getting some tough but not impossible achievements for it.
NG2 may just be the game to make me finally get a console. I know there are lots of great console games, but I like a challenge, a real challenge, and nothing even compares to the skill level it takes to beat a Ninja Gaiden title.
Granted NG2 has my interest, but what's with all the 360 votes with little backup? Just curious while yall think '08 will be so big for the 360?
MightyMutt 01-11-2008, 01:03 PM I said PS3 and thats a big admission for someone thats generally a Xbox fan. I think that PS3 will make up a lot of ground and even if its not on top by the end of the year I think that the turning point in the console war will definitely be within 2008. This is assuming that Sony do get a few things right, MG4 needs to sell consoles and Little Big Planet and Home need to make the impact that Sony is implying they will.
Perhaps I overly negative when it comes to the 360 coz of previous experiences with the RRoD etc but I really feel that if Microsoft doesn't come up with a more definite answer to their reliability issues it could really harm their chances in the future. As I said I'm a big Xbox fan but if my present one dies out of warrenty I'll have to really consider my options if I can not rely on a new one to work properly.
Sorry PacManPolarBear but I can't see what is going to save PC gaming if games like Crysis are only selling 80,000 copies. Rampant piracy and continual need for massive amounts of re-invest large sums of cash in hardware are massive problems that I don't see the PC overcoming. Come join us on the console side of life.
PacManPolarBear 01-11-2008, 01:55 PM ^ I may get a console sooner or later, but like I have said a million times, PC's have been dieing since the first Nintendo came out. Despite that the PC gaming industry makes more money every year, not less. Not the huge amounts consoles make, but still more. It will NEVER die. Crysis may not have sold like crazy, but the bidding war over the Crytek engine is insane right now and that game set a standard that the current gen consoles cannot hope to match. What are the two most popular, still played games in the whole world? Oh, looky here, their BOTH PC games. StarCraft and WoW. Go figure. Halo3 had massive sales but will thousands upon thousands of people still be playing 2 years from now? Nope, they'll have moved on to the next disposable console title.
You all say the same things about PC's every year, but ALL GAMES are made on a PC. You really think they will stop making PC games while still using PC's to make games for consoles? That makes no sense at all. The PC gaming industry has been and always will be what pushes gaming tech for all platforms. I think you will see less PC exclusives without question, but developers will always want to see how far they can go and showcase how good there games can look, and consoles will always be behind in that regard.
Not only that but all this BS about spending $2000 every year on PC hardware is just nonsense. My 3+ year old rig is still going strong, not playing all games at max but light years ahead of anything a console can dish out. It plays any game on the market. At most your looking at $500 a year to stay top end, but you can easily make that every second year and still be playing high end games. Of course this implies you actually are a savvy shopper and not buying crap Dell's or Alienware pieces of trash. Think about it, almost every middle class home in the world owns a PC, but they will stop making games for them? Fat chance of that.
Does it cost more? Well yeah it does. But why do people still buy an Infiniti when a Ford Escort is cheaper? Because a G35 Coupe is ten times better thats why. PC's are for working class adults who use them for much more than just gaming.
Garwalker 01-11-2008, 02:00 PM But would you say there is the same number of quality games on the PC compared to the 360?
PacManPolarBear 01-11-2008, 02:08 PM ^ Without question. Please excuse my rabid devotion to my platform btw, PC gamers can be every bit as defensive as our console peers. If you want to compare lists for '07 or '08 I'd be glad to.
Garwalker 01-11-2008, 02:22 PM Oh yeah
Well Do you have Bioshock or COD4 or Orange Box or UTIII or Gears of War or Rainbow 6 Vegas?
I guess that was kind of a stupid question.
PacManPolarBear 01-11-2008, 02:44 PM ^ Lol. Of course I do. Though I had a few games stolen but I do or did own all those save for R6V for the PC.
MightyMutt 01-11-2008, 02:44 PM Yep PMPB I will definitely concede to your point about Starcraft and WoW I do to easy forget about that part of the market coz it has never interested me but its very narrow sighted of me as in many areas of the world it represents a large number of gamers and a large source of revenue.
To be fair I knew I was stepping on a nerve but your fellow PC gamers benefit from being reminded that they'll be okay. I personally have never got on with the Mouse and Keyboard combo, its not that I don't believe in their advantages its just I grew up on Atari 2000, Sega Genesis sort of root, always consoles.
To make matter possibly worse for you the only game I ever been able to play on my MAC (not sure if you are hardcore PC or just anti-console!) is Football Manager! But yeah even my computers aren't PC. I pity anyone who has to suffer a dell.
Oh and I still want you to get a console but you might want to wait I also think 2008 will be the year of the price cut.
rothbart 01-11-2008, 05:51 PM its just I grew up on Atari 2000
Ha ha, your Atari was only 76.9% of mine, I had an Atari 2600! :D
Canuck 01-11-2008, 06:37 PM Ha ha, your Atari was only 76.9% of mine, I had an Atari 2600! :D
Lol, I kinda grew up on a PC :D
PopTrogdor 01-11-2008, 06:56 PM lol this is now a "i grew up on..." post
well might as well join em, i grew up on the master system, and ms dos, playing doom 2 since i was still 'single digit' years old
MightyMutt 01-11-2008, 07:05 PM While I didn't strictly own an Atari 2000 I did play on one. When I was younger my Dad owned a video shop that also rented out consoles, I borrowed them on weekends when they weren't being rented and was fortunate enough to keep one and a load of games when they stopped renting them out. Don't know if 2000 was one of the ones being rented out or it was a promotional thing but unfortunately the one I got and still have today is the 2600 coz the 2000 would be worth bucks, but I had no idea back then. It wasn't as good as the 2600 anyway, the controller wasn't as good. (well if I remember right it was a long time ago)
Inzader 01-11-2008, 07:46 PM PS3
Killzone 2, Burst limit, FLoWer, Little Big planet, Uncharted 2, So much more. So PS3 For me.
Canuck 01-11-2008, 08:13 PM PS3
Killzone 2, Burst limit, FLoWer, Little Big planet, Uncharted 2, So much more. So PS3 For me.
Yes, because Uncharted 2 is coming this year...
rothbart 01-12-2008, 12:45 AM Well after today big news we certainly need to put Resistance 2 into this category!
http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/ee91/Loudone1/gicoverfeb08.jpg
2008: The year of Resistance 2! :D
Mr Eibmoz 01-12-2008, 01:06 AM PC's have been dieing since the first Nintendo came out. Despite that the PC gaming industry makes more money every year, not less.
Has it ever been as bad as this though? Sales down and piracy WAY f'kin up! I mean, its ubelievably easy to pirate a PC game these days. Crysis getting a 10k seed on one site is insane since it only sold 8x that. Sure the console have their piracy, but you have to mod them and thats offputting for a lot - PC its right out the box and nothing seems to be able to stop it. You used to have to skulk down your local market looking for some dodgy stall to get a CD with Quake and Tombraider on it - now you can click a link and have a 4gig game thats still weeks from release in the time it takes to watch a film.
I dont want the PC to die, especially now that Ive just upgraded from a 2200XP/6600/1gig to semi respectable C2D/8800GT/4gb and can get pack to playing everything again! But... it dosnt look too good from here. It'll never die completely, but AAA titles are definately going to take a massive hit.
Ploogle 01-12-2008, 04:22 AM Well, seeing as how Spore is coming to all consoles, I'd have to say PC. Spore'll hit that first. :D
regua 01-12-2008, 06:20 AM Voted for PS3. Honestly, I'd like the 360 to continue the lead in the console war, but without the high-capacity discs, either stable or free Xbox Live and a few decent exclusives for the 360, 2008 may be the year of PS3.
I will never be interested in buying a PS3, though; having two (or three) next-gen consoles is a huge waste of money and brings the "which console should I buy that game for?" dilemma.
PC gaming is dead for me; investing the money needed to play the newest titles on my PC is worthless in my opinion.
As to handhelds, I've never been really interested in them. Of course, PSP could be a great music/video player apart from being a decent gaming console, but until a new version of PSP or (preferably) a portable Xbox is created, I will not buy any handheld console.
the Wii is the opposite of everything I look for in a gaming platform.
QFT.
Mr Eibmoz 01-12-2008, 07:33 AM I dont like to have fun...
Canuck 01-12-2008, 12:34 PM I don't like having fun either.
...
strika234 01-12-2008, 07:27 PM I change people's quotes.
I also hate having fun
...??!;)
Canuck 01-12-2008, 07:44 PM Canuck is amazing. I am his #1 fan, and I worship him every day. I realize how incredible he really is and I hope that everyone else does too. We are all nothing compared to his greatness.
Thank you, I appreciate your admiration.
strika234 01-12-2008, 08:05 PM why do you appreciate someone like me? I am nothing compared to your awesomeness. you are so much better than me in every aspect of life. Whenever I am in trouble, I ask myself: What would strika234 do? that way, I know I will do what is right. You are the sun, while I am a worn out lightbulb.
wow... thanks! :D
Bauer22 01-12-2008, 08:18 PM Well after today big news we certainly need to put Resistance 2 into this category!
*Big Picture*
2008: The year of Resistance 2! :D
That looks so epic!! Not sure how the people on the PS3 are but if this were on the 360 I could now hear 59 whiny kids yell "What a Fa.." and "NOOB" or some other stupid comment. I still want to see how the 2 campaign and 8 player co op thing works out.
Canuck 01-12-2008, 08:42 PM I cry myself to sleep at night because I know that I'll never be as good as Canuck at everything... *sob*
I know, I feel your pain.
strika234 01-12-2008, 08:45 PM I can't get up in the morning sometimes because I am just so overcome at how awesome strika is. Measuring up to him is like anant measuring up to an elephant.
You've got to learn to live with it...
Lord Butters I 01-13-2008, 02:11 AM The Wii only sells like drinks at a frat party because it markets to the casual gaming market. Nintendo executives even anounced that they weren't even going to pretend to care about us anymore. Why would they? Wii sports alone is more popular then god, I know several people who own a wii but haven't bought any games for it because all they use it for is Wii Sports. Wii Fit will sell another ten billion of the tiny white boxes of money, and I don't think the wellspring of cash will dry up any time soon.
Wizard 01-13-2008, 12:50 PM I think the PS3's year is finally coming, but the 360 will still be better.
