1998, by far the best year for gaming in my opinion. Resident Evil 2, Starcraft, Banjo-Kazooie, Parasite Eve, Pokemon Red n' Blue, Fallout 2, Grim Fandango, Xenogears, Metal Gear Solid, Half-Life, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Baldur's Gate, and Turok 2.

After reading the list il have to say 2002. So many iconic franchises started then or had a key sequel.

As did the birth of modern day free-roaming games with GTAIII.

If not 2002 then absolutely 2007 but 2002 does it for me by a long way.

Anything before 2002 by far, preferably the 90's.
You have to realize the the basis of existence for most modern games were created back then. Here's some examples:

Marathon..............Halo
System Shock.............Bioshock
Old final fantasy games...........anything above FF9
Zelda (mainly any of the N64 titles).................any of the GC or Wii zeldas
Twisted metal 1 through 4...................twisted metal: black (and that one for psp which i forgot the name for)^

Anyway, what i'm essentially saying is that you can't have good children without parents. And don't even mention adoption.

Halo and the birth of the Xbox was probably the moment I converted into a hardcore gamer, however I didn't read all the posts before I voted, oops but come on they was a lot of reading in the yearly line ups! Thanks for that and not going to have a go coz you went to some effort composing your post and was evidently cheifed by Metacritic but you should probably change my vote to pre 2002. In 2007 there was too much of a barren spell and all the good games coming out at the same time made it more difficult to appreciate them properly.
2003 and 1998 also deserve honourable mentions as enjoyable years.
