The February issue of EGM arrived in my mailbox this weekend and they’ve taken a nod from the current presidential hopefuls and mocked up a “Decision ‘08? feature where each platform candidate lists why you should vote for them in 2008.
As someone that owns all three current-gen systems, I was understandably excited to read about the best each candidate had in store for the coming year.
Just a reminder that for this last part of my three-part coverage, I am intentionally confining my discussion to the titles EGM chose to list for each platform. If there’s a glaring omission (of an officially announced title), complain to them, not me. I should also note that all three platforms become much more compelling when you factor in the multi-platform releases.
I immediately noticed that the PS3 clocks in an impressive 16 titles in EGM’s feature compared to 10 each for the Wii and Xbox 360. Another thing I noticed is that at least half of those 16 games are sequels to popular franchises that have done well on other Playstation platforms. The biggest benefit the PS3 has in this race is that it can address the tried-and-true strategy of giving the fans more of what they want while also going out and trying to create some new franchises at the same time.
Here’s exactly what Playstation 3 exclusives EGM listed:
Gran Turismo 5: Prologue
Final Fantasy XIII
LittleBigPlanet
The Agency
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
Hot Shots Golf 5
SOCOM: Confrontation
Infamous
Afrika
Killzone 2
Yakuza Kenzan
White Knight Chronicles
Valkyrie of the Battlefield: Gallian Chronicles
Wipeout HD
Tekken 6
Singstar
Let’s break down the genres represented by this list: 2 racers, 3 RPGs, 1 MMOFPS, 4 Action, 2 FPSs, 1 Sports, 1 Music, 1 Fighter, and 1 Safari-Photography-Sim-Mystery. Those games cover a lot of bases. As a candidate in this race, it would seem the PS3 has something to offer almost everyone. They may not be the favorite going into 2008, but it’s clear they have a lot of support from their party to try to win your vote.
Sure, there’s an argument to be made that the PS3 only has so many exclusives listed now because they were delayed from last year. To answer that, I’d say “So?” I think we’re to the point now where the past is the past. We should focus more on the present and future. Frankly, I think there’s something to be said for not rushing games to arbitrarily make some deadline if you know your game (or even install base) isn’t up to snuff yet. I don’t see how the PS3 can not have a phenomenal year with some of the exclusives listed above.
It’s still quite early in the year with plenty of room left for announcing currently unknown titles for this fall, but that applies to all the candidates. I know Microsoft just announced they’re going to announce something at GDC late next month about their upcoming titles this year (man I just love it when they announce announcements, how about you?) Maybe that’s when we’ll hear about Gears of War 2 or Banjo Threeie.
Who knows when or what Nintendo might announce, they announce the weirdest things and then proceed to sell them like hotcakes. Actually, I’m not even sure hotcakes sell as well as some of Nintendo’s products. In addition to the titles listed above, I expect Sony to actually announce more titles such as whatever two games Team ICO have been working on since last year, Naughty Dog’s current project, or the recently acknowledged Resistance 2 from Insomniac Games.
There you have it. The platform-exclusive coverage from EGM’s Decision ‘08 feature, broken down into platform-specific bites. Looking at it solely from the games they’ve listed, how do you see the upcoming year looking for each of the candidates? It remains to be seen whether 2008 will best 2007 for the folks that only own an Xbox 360 (clearly 2007 was), but for the folks with access to two or all three of these platforms, it definitely does look like 2008 has the potential to be better than 2007. Frankly… that scares me a little and scares my wallet a lot!
Yousty 01-16-2008, 03:16 PM You used "Banjo Threeie." You hate that title (as do I). If Microsoft finally puts a release date on Banjo-Kazooie 3 then they have my vote as winner. That's how desperate I am for a true next-gen platformer (R&C just doesn't do it for me, too much gun use).
There's no arguing that PS3 has the best lineup for 2008 right now. I have a feeling that the 360 has a couple aces up its sleeve that it hasn't divulged yet, but then again so could Sony.

*gasp* What was Ratchet & Clank Future?!?! I was really just trying to come up with games that I "suppose" are being released this year but haven't "officially" been announced. Not many names popped into my head.

I suspect they all do, but to what effect, we'll have to see. IMO, it'll take a lot to downplay what Sony's got going this year. If HD-DVD dies early on in the year (even if only "effectively" and not "officially"), that's one more reason to consider buying into the platform.

Doh, you must have been too quick for my edit, because I knew you would bring that game up.;)

Sony's decision to force blu-ray onto gamers (and it actually working) is going to be a huge payoff for Sony this year. I'd be willing to bet almost anything by the time that it's all said and done and 2008 is over, PS3 will have pulled ahead of 360 in install base numbers. That's right, I said it, and this is coming from somebody who loves his 360.
Hopefully Microsoft enjoyed 2007, because 2008 belongs to Sony.
Dexyn 01-16-2008, 03:29 PM I'm loving the list so far, and as Yousty said, it's pretty much a hands down winner. Until the other hands pull aces out and prove someone wrong.
As for the other lists my general concern was how uninteresting the titles were, and on top of that, how little there was to represent different genres.
JasonSoft 01-16-2008, 03:36 PM LittleBigPlanet
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
Only games on the list I'd personally care enough to buy (Maybe rent a few others). I even used to enjoy FF games, but since playing a string on online RPGs any singal player ones feel like an empty shell (save for the presence of somthing totaly new 'Mass effect').
Chrono 01-16-2008, 03:44 PM Tekken 6
Gran Turismo 5: Prologue
Final Fantasy XIII
these 3 games are the reason i bought a PS3 in the first place
Tekken 6:
The most sucessful fighting francise and the one that i personally cant wait to go to tourney's for. Online tekken=amazing
GT 5:
The best selling and amazing driving series gets even better looking with more options
Final Fantasy XIII:
The most sucessful RPG francise of all time has another great installment.
Hands down the year of the PS3
Garwalker 01-16-2008, 03:46 PM Here is my take on each of the titles.
Gran Turismo 5: Prologue - I'm a huge GT fan. Hands down the best racing series. But enough of the demos SOny. Get the game our already. From what I've read and heard, this is not the full game but just a piece of what the final game will be. But lets not call it a game.
Final Fantasy XIII - Do you really think this is going to be out in 2008? Even Shane B. doesn't think so.
LittleBigPlanet - Very exciting game. Really looking forward to this.
The Agency - Again from what has been said at 1Up who just saw it, this will be a 2009 title.
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots - Should be contender for game of the year.
Hot Shots Golf 5 - I like this golf game over Tiger series but I don't know if it should be one of the most anticipated games of 2008.
SOCOM: Confrontation - Don't see this as topping COD4 or even coming close. Nice title but if it was a cross platform game, it probably would get the same amount of hype as GRAW 3.
Infamous - Like what I see
Afrika - JC on a biscuit. Are you kidding me?
Killzone 2 - Looks great but will it play great. Lets hold off on calling it a great title until Guerrilla Games makes A good game first.
Yakuza Kenzan - All I hear is the sound of crickets.
White Knight Chronicles - Looks good. So did Blue Dragon. TBD
Valkyrie of the Battlefield: Gallian Chronicles - There's those damn crickets again!
Wipeout HD - Always been a big fan of the series. I'm sure this will be gorgeous.
Tekken 6 - This series is DOA. The talk of the fighting community will be Soul Caliber IV
Singstar - YES. I can't wait to sing. Oh yeah I can do that with Rock Band. Have fun Europe.
I'm not sure what's up with EGM. There are several games on both lists that did not show up that should replace some of the hohum titles. I'm sure Japan would love this list more than the U.S. Shane must have put some of these games on the list.

Beautifully put, Garwalker. That's exactly how I feel about all of those titles.
rothbart 01-16-2008, 03:55 PM Garwalker, these are "notable exclusives" not nominations for GOTY... ;) Two of those titles will likely be PSN-distributed titles.
BTW, SOCOM: Confrontation is the PSN SOCOM game (expect it to be $40 and downloadable like Warhawk), there's still a "true" SOCOM sequel being worked on by the main team.
rothbart 01-16-2008, 03:56 PM Beautifully put, Garwalker. That's exactly how I feel about all of those titles.
Did he do that in the other two threads? ;)

Even more to the point. SOCOM was a great franchise when it had little competition but since then it has lost alot of its luster.

I've actually stated in a different forum that RTS do not thrill me on the 360 (http://sarcasticgamer.com/forums/showpost.php?p=48931&postcount=28)
And you said "I am intentionally confining my discussion to the titles EGM chose to list for each platform. If there’s a glaring omission (of an officially announced title), complain to them, not me." So I didn't.
What was the second thread?

I meant a title-by-title breakdown of the lists from the 360 and Wii.
viatrophy 01-16-2008, 04:08 PM The only game on that list which truly temps me to buy a ps3 is LittleBigPlanet.
That game looks so happy and fun. :D

So answer this... if you bought a PS3 for LBP, would you then look at any of the others? :D
viatrophy 01-16-2008, 04:10 PM So answer this... if you bought a PS3 for LBP, would you then look at any of the others? :D
Probably. Maybe GT5,
Wasn't there something about that game where you were able to download episodes of Top Gear through the ingame store.
Im sure I read about that somewhere..
one thing which is more tempting me to buy a ps3 is you can get Starship Troopers on blu-ray.
god I love that film...
JasonSoft 01-16-2008, 04:11 PM Final Fantasy XIII:
The most sucessful RPG francise of all time has another great installment.
Can I have your copy now your done?

Yes, you can do that. I'm not sure how recent the episodes are, if they're entire episodes, or what, but it even worked in the demo.

Not specific to you viatrophy, but I've noticed an interesting trend in people that used to love to hate on Sony now finally warming up to the PS3 but only under the guise of <insert some film out on Blu-ray> and using the PS3 as a Blu-ray player. Yeah.... right. :D
Please feel free to send me your SIXAXIS controller(s), I'll send you a Blu-ray remote in return!
viatrophy 01-16-2008, 04:19 PM Yes, you can do that. I'm not sure how recent the episodes are, if they're entire episodes, or what, but it even worked in the demo.

That best not of been aimed at me. :p
I was intending on buying one end of last year when a family member went to America with his work but they were apparently sold out in the stores he went in, damn.
Did you like Top Gear then rothbart? That show is hilarious. :D
Also If FFXII IS confirmed for the ps3, I WILL buy one, right here, right now. :p
I don't need a ps3 remote, my phone works for the media player apparently. :p
But yeah, I will own one by the end of this year, the problem is when.
Saving up for holidays etc. damn. :(
Garwalker 01-16-2008, 04:19 PM I meant a title-by-title breakdown of the lists from the 360 and Wii.
Ninja Gaiden 2 is my most anticipated game of 2008. It was the only one on EGM's list. If you breakdown my 10 most anticipated games 2 are 360 exclusives, 3 are SOny exclusives, and 5 are cross platform games. For me 2008 is really the year of the cross platform games.
So you can stick your 360 fanboy innuendo up your ;)
rothbart 01-16-2008, 04:28 PM So you can stick your 360 fanboy innuendo up your ;)
It was really intended as an "equal opportunity naysayer" move on your part. As an interesting aside, I just accidentally misspelled "naysayer" as "nayswayer" and I really like that as a real word. Someone who dogs on something in the hopes of changing other people's minds. I think I've been accused of that (short of having a single word to mean it) from time to time... Oh, yes... I like that word!
Bob Ross - "Happy little accidents" :D
Garwalker 01-16-2008, 04:31 PM It was really intended as an "equal opportunity naysayer" move on your part.
I'm sorry.:(
By the way, I don't comment on Wii. Don't really feel the need to talk about the 2 good games a year.
Duffman X18 01-16-2008, 05:58 PM LittleBigPlanet
Killzone 2
SOCOM: Confrontation
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
Games I've heard of/interested in.
PopTrogdor 01-16-2008, 06:06 PM Never heard of Gran Turismo then? But then again, guess you might not be interested in it
for me:
* Gran Turismo 5: Prologue
* Final Fantasy XIII
* LittleBigPlanet
* The Agency
* Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
* Infamous
* Afrika
* Killzone 2
* White Knight Chronicles
* Valkyrie of the Battlefield: Gallian Chronicles
* Wipeout HD
* Tekken 6
rothbart 01-16-2008, 06:14 PM Honestly, I won't buy GT5P (or GT5) either... I'm not into sim-racers. They're purdy, but I wouldn't buy them.
The games I'm interested/anxious for are: LittleBigPlanet, Infamous, Killzone 2, Wipeout HD, and yes Singstar (I already own Rock Band, so don't tell me to go buy Rock Band.)
That said, there are some that I'm "somewhat" interested in as well: The Agency (still need to see/learn more), MGS4 (played MGS1 loved it, beat it, haven't been hooked by a MGS game since), SOCOM: Confrontation (I'll need a demo and/or phenomenal reviews for this before I'll bite), Afrika (it looks cool as hell but I have no idea what you'll do... even if it is Pokemon Snap in Africa, I might bite... don't judge me! :D).
The rest, while they may be decent/good/awesome aren't my cup of tea by genre.

I envy you for owning Rock Band.. It isn't coming out over here for months. :(
PopTrogdor 01-16-2008, 06:25 PM i love racing games, i just hope this one doesnt follow suit with the "no split screen" local play, which i love when mates are round.
Yousty 01-16-2008, 06:26 PM Not specific to you viatrophy, but I've noticed an interesting trend in people that used to love to hate on Sony now finally warming up to the PS3 but only under the guise of <insert some film out on Blu-ray> and using the PS3 as a Blu-ray player. Yeah.... right. :D
*Raises hand*
So far, the blu-ray player is the only reason that I really wanted a PS3 (I'm an HD enthusiast). I have had a PS3 for three weeks now and I have yet to put a game in it, but I own 15 blu-ray movies.:D Ratchet & Clank kind of interests me, but not enough that I've gone out and rented it yet.
To be honest, the only title that interests me in EGM's list is LittleBigPlanet.
rothbart 01-16-2008, 06:33 PM Yousty, if you're as big of a platformer fan as you say, you need to play R&CF! You will like it. Give it 4 levels. That's like 60-90 minutes if I had to guesstimate. If you play 4 levels and still feel uninterested, I'll leave you alone about the title. But I'm willing to bet you'll be sucked into the game...
Unless I'm mistaking you for someone else, you love platformers, right?
Yousty 01-16-2008, 06:39 PM I know, I know. I definitely plan on playing the game, I just haven't gotten around to it yet. I'm sure I'll like it, I'm just waiting until I have a completely free weekend so that I can hopefully beat it in one rental period.
MasonicOne 01-16-2008, 08:40 PM The Agency is coming out on the PC as well. So I wouldn't really label that or any of the RTS titles coming out on the 360 as 'exclusive' but that's just me.
Final Fantasy 13 I really don't see it coming out this year. I mean I can see Sony pushing for this game to be rushed. Other then that Square just doesn't strike me as the type that would rush the next Final Fantasy out the door.
Now it's just the start of the year, and well I'm not ready to scream "OMG PS3 Won!!!" I'll make my call after E3 this year, as I think Microsoft and Nintendo do have some ace's in the hole. So I'm going to take a wait and see part to all of this...
Not only that but Sony has done very well in putting their foot into their mouth last year. And some of those titles if I recall did get pushed back from till this year... But again I'm not ready to proclaim the PS3 winner.

I got bored with it really quickly.
Dexyn 01-16-2008, 10:09 PM Played it till I was done, then I was sad.
Sinfulfate 01-16-2008, 10:24 PM Gran Turismo 5: Prologue-$40 for a demo of a racing sim that doesn't allow me to tune my cars? What were they thinking?
Final Fantasy XIII-I hope this games come out in 2008 but I doubt it.
LittleBigPlanet-Really looking forward to this one but I fear that user generated content wont be handled well.
The Agency-MMO's for consoles is always welcome but I doubt this game will make a 08 release.
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots-I hated MGS 2 and didn't bother to play MGS 3 to I have no plans on playing this. Should be a awesome game for MGS fans tho.
Hot Shots Golf 5-Why isn't this game out in the states yet?
SOCOM: Confrontation-The trailer was sweet last year but how will this game hold up to the 10+ shooters coming to the PS3 this year?
Infamous-Don't know much about this.
Afrika-No idea what type of game this is.
Killzone 2-Gameplay footage looked sweet but the first one wasn't too great. Will it be good enough to get that bad taste out of my mouth Killzone 1 left? Who knows.
Yakuza Kenzan-Never heard of this.
White Knight Chronicles-Looks sweet and according to ign its out already in japan. I hope so or it might be another long wait to hit the states.
Valkyrie of the Battlefield: Gallian Chronicles-Haven't heard much about this game but as of now it has no plans of being release outside of japan.
Wipeout HD-Not a fan of the series but hey wait why do PSN exclusives count but WiiWare and XBLA exclusives don't? EGM bias much?
Tekken 6-Soul Calibur > Tekken but the more fighters the better.
Singstar-Looks cool.
Looks like PS3 owners are finally getting some great games. I'm not a fan of most of the games on the list but overall PS3 owners are finally getting a quality lineup. Looks like 2008 will be the end of the "PS3 has no games" comments.
As long as S-E has some real footage of FF XIII to show and announces Kingdom Hearts III for PS3, 2008 will best 2007 :)
Diortem 01-16-2008, 10:41 PM Since you gave the idea, why not? (Though for me, if there is a PC version it would come first... Im sure you understand.)
Gran Turismo 5: Prologue: Racing game, I would walk away offhand.
Final Fantasy XIII: Again, Im going to walk away. To be blunt, Ive never been a Final Fantasy fan... I sided with Phantasy Star long ago (and Darkforce NEVER dissapointed me).
LittleBigPlanet: THIS I like. Like Im envious of the PS3 for this like.
The Agency: Im curious. Seems so far MS has dropped the ball for cross-platforming, so lets see what Sony can do....
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots: Never got into this series... so the killer app for everyone else, isnt really for me.
Hot Shots Golf 5: sport game... if you are playing a sport VIDEO game, I think you are missing the point to be honest (unless the game is impossible to play off a screen, anyway). Next.
SOCOM: Confrontation: I never did get into the modern or ww2 games. Generally didnt call to me.
Infamous: Never heard of it.
Afrika: Can anyone tell me what this is? Seriously... I want to know.
Killzone 2: While I cant say I wanted to play the 1st one, the world it's in is incredible. I will pay attention to it.
Yakuza Kenzan: Not sure I care, to be honest.
White Knight Chronicles: Aside from the name, Ive heard nothing about this.
Valkyrie of the Battlefield: Gallian Chronicles: If this is from the series I think it is, it has my curiousity.
Wipeout HD: racing... just no
Tekken 6: Fighting... just no
Singstar: singing? um... no
Now I will do this for all of these, but before I go, I cant say just let the past go. I mean, 360 and PC, sure.... because they've been around enough they are established. Wii and PS3, all you have is this first year and the new one comming. There isnt enough of a library to just let the past go yet for iether of them.
Meta666 01-17-2008, 12:46 PM Being a RPG player I really like this lineup. The only problem is when FF vs XIII is coming out? FF vs XIII seems much better than FF XIII. Plus if the new Shin Megami Tensei game comes out this year, I couldn't be more pleased.
Announced Exclusive Games:
Final Fantasy XIII
LittleBigPlanet
The Agency
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
Infamous
White Knight Chronicles
Valkyrie of the Battlefield: Gallian Chronicles
Tekken 6
Multiplatform Games:
Devil May Cry 4
Soul Calibur IV
Star Wars: The Force Unleashed
Borderlands
Fallout 3
Prototype
Games I want to come out this year as well:
Final Fantasy Versus XIII
God of War III
Shin Megami Tensei (Working Title)
I mean with this many games I doubt I will be dissapointed.
