Being a bit of a home theater hobbyist, I can make an educated guess as to why the Full RGB isn't enabled by default. Based on my research, this 'turns on' the xvYCC capabilities of the box (not the Deep Color as some have speculated). If your TV doesn't support xvYCC you will, at worst, get no picture at all (which would make it very difficult to change the settings) or at best get a sub-par picture with crushed blacks and loss of detail (see this thread (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=967106) for more info).

Bottom line, giving out the general advice to "set RGB to Full" is doing a disservice. You will only gain benefit from doing so if your TV supports it, and for your TV to support it you would have to have purchased in the last few months. When I was shopping for a new HDTV three months ago the vast majority of them were still supporting HDMI 1.2. Mitsubishi, Pioneer, and Sony (the XBR series) were among the few supporting 1.3 at the time, and then only in their latest sets (some of which weren't even widely available at the time).

P.S. If your TV supports it and you set RGB to Full, you should probably recalibrate your set (you did calibrate it in the first place, right?). If you don't want to pay the ~$400 for a professional calibration you can do it yourself with something like Avia (http://www.ovationmultimedia.com/avia.html) or Digital Video Essentials (http://www.videoessentials.com/DVE_HDBasics.php).

They're doing what Microsoft didn't: anticipating a server overload. That's all that's going on; it'll make the release date...
