I recently started playing this game, and it's pretty damn good. I most play FPS games, and hate RTS games, but this one is actually playable for me.
The little cutscene guides to point out targets on the map and highlighting key buildings really makes it simple to figure out what the hell you are supposed to do. Hotkeys are easily programmable.
My only complaint is the system used to move the view of the map. I find myself, as an RTS noob, using the arrow keys to move.

I played the demo when it first came out and I thought it was pretty decent. However, when I cautiously moved my hand towards my wallet to buy the game, my friend stayed my hand. Instead, he supplied me with a copy of Company of Heroes and I'm really thankful he did. The game mechanics are quite similar, but CoH has something called...er...a storyline. Word of advice: don't take C&C 3 single player seriously. Otherwise it should get you by until SC2 ^_^

Er, it does have a story line. A pretty good one at that.

I'm going to get it, eventually, but I have too many games to beat right now. :p
I prefered C&C3 to CoH. The RTS genre is starting to split into two different forms it seems to me. The classic "gather build and destroy." And this new "collect control points and wait for a predetermined amount of resources to be added every tick." I'll stick with the classic, thanks.
Oh and C&C3 has a story line that blows CoH out of the water.

I tend to stick to using the arrow keys to move around, I also use the minimap alot to get to certain spots faster. I don't bother with "marking" a spot, its just faster to use the minimap as long as your radar is up.

As far as single plyr goes CnC3 is pretty damn fun. Good story and interaction. As a competitve online plyr though I despise this title...and the EA goons that failed yet again.
So I am kinda half/half on it. SinglePlayer was one of the most fun all year for RTS....online I think I'd rather play the 'punch my self in the nuts for fun' game.
Supreme Commander quickly took over for me, horrible campaign but awesome online.
