I was pretty excited to take a shot at Turning Point: Fall of Liberty. It’s got Nazis to kill and New York City to defend. Color me intrigued.
I happened to be one of the lucky few that actually was able to download it. Now, I can’t get it off my hard drive fast enough. Find out
why, after the jump!
Let’s start with the controls. The controls suck. You only get three different sensitivities, Low, Medium and High. I started with Medium, but it makes you feel like you’re walking around underwater. So,I tried High. It was way too squirrely. It has some kind of inertia thing working that caused a half-a-second hiccup, so when you look left and immediately try looking right,it would slow down and then turn right. It was really strange. I was forced to keep the Medium settings on.
So, anyway, you start off on a construction girder in the middle of downtown New York when the proverbial crap hits the fan. Nazi airplanes come streaking by the buildings and if you look off into the bay, you’ll see an armada approaching New York. You’re first job is to immediately get off the girder and get to the street level. That part, I liked. Unfortunately, the graphics are so clunky and ugly, it was difficult to appreciate the spectacle.
When you finally do get a weapon, you’ll notice immediately how poor of a shooter it really is. I can’t tell you how many times, in the demo, that I saw tons of A.I. routine glitches when I would see a bad guy behind cover and when I shot five or six shots, dead bang center of his noggin, there was no response. With the same enemy in front of me, I inched up a bit, which apparently triggering his A.I. script, causing him to shimmy and stand up. I raised my gun to fire, but he crouched down into the same position. I altered my aim and this time with one shot, he was dead. Apparently, the only difference was that half of a step. That kind of scripted bull crap happened a number of times throughout the demo.
I also have to note that, at the end of the demo, when you finally make it to street level, you broke into a cut scene showing massive destruction of Mid-town Manhattan. It was very 9-11ish. Just an FYI.
I am really disappointed in, what I thought would be, a pretty interesting game. Although it has a WWII vibe, it’s set in New York City. You’re supposed to play a normal Joe, fighting a Nazi invasion, with other regular folk. Sounds kinda like a first person Freedom Fighters.
Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this demo. It sucks, big time. There’s no other way to say it. Instead of Freedom Fighters, it played more like Hour of Victory.
Yeah, I went there.
Do Not Want.
Ah well. Back to Call of Duty 4.
