NecrisJ1MM 01-30-2008, 11:06 PM Do it so it keeps your post more organized and easier to read, I personally though, don't mind if you use txt talk here and there, some words are just much faster when in txt. But don't ever try typing your posts in leet.

NecrisJ1MM 01-31-2008, 12:36 AM How the hell did you translate that?
The last part is easy, but I don't have a clue what the first part says... I can vaguely make out "BBQ". Why, yes I would like some BBQ, thank you very much.
P.S. I went online and checked a few Leet to English translators ;)
Pablos102030 01-31-2008, 01:10 AM I was just demonstrating why leet should never be used here. obviously it worked.

What is the exact reason someone chooses to type as you do? No offense, but given your handle and your typing (which is really all I've got to go by here) I'm going to have to guess "his name" is moron. Make no mistake, I'm saying I'd guess your name is moron not calling you one. Your image is as you make it. This may make me come off as an ass for being so blunt but I want you to rest assured that people that "lazy type" or "txt type" come off as either lazy, unintelligent or some bastardization of the two.
If you want to act lazy and stupid, then expect people to call you on it. You claim you've been typing this way for the last ten years without incident... I'd say that's probably more of a commentary on the people you've been hanging around with more than anything.
People that use the "I only type that way when I'm on the net" excuse make me laugh too... Do you talk like an imbecile when you're just running up to the market for a soda? Do you speak in severely broken English when you're out buying gas? I sure hope not. Why are we any less deserving of that courtesy?
For the record, I use proper English all the time trying my best to get correct spelling, word usage (and with great effort) punctuation. Nobody's demanding perfection here, but a little effort would be nice.
I've always felt that if it's worth saying, it's worth saying right. Don't cheat yourself. If you really are unable to spell correctly, choose the correct (complete) words, or use proper grammar, then by all means I apologize... but I doubt that's the case.

I find it justifiable to use txt talk on forums, chatting, and other similar places, since txt talk is capable of delivering the same word, in less time. It can save you time and effort, though people might call that lazy, who gives a crap. I'm no English enthusiast, I figure as long as the message is clear, I don't care how you deliver it.
As for grammar and punctuation, I say the same thing, not everyone is verbose in their vocabulary or A+ in English, I use tons of commas all the time, which I'm pretty sure is not "grammatically correct", and I think I've forgotten most of my English lessons from back in high school. Though I do try to post as clearly as possible for the reading ease of others.
fyremakyer 01-31-2008, 12:35 PM I don't mind as long as it isn't in leet (l33T)
rothbart 01-31-2008, 01:52 PM I do try to post as clearly as possible for the reading ease of others.
That's the key point though. Folks abbreviating 2-4 letter words just come off as lazy and it sticks out like a sore thumb in my opinion. Is it really hard to add the "e" to "b" to be "be"? Or the "yo" to "ur" to be "your"?
If someone's grammar, spelling, lack of punctuation, or obvious wrong word choice are distracting to the average reader, that's when it becomes unacceptable. If you look at the typical post on these forums, they're fine. There are occasional abbreviations, acronyms, misspellings, bad grammar or punctuation but the difference is people can forgive obvious mistakes. Lack of effort though is a lot more distracting.
When someone's lack of effort writing something increases the amount of effort I have to put into reading it, then it's crossed my line of acceptable. Keep in mind though I don't run around complaining about everyone's posts I think are borderline or bad, just the worst of the worst. Chiming in on someone else's complaints may happen from time to time as well... ;)
Jordan the hobo 01-31-2008, 01:53 PM as long as its understandable i don't personally care but if i cannot spell a word I will try to pick one that i can spell, to make its a little bit easier

In all seriousness it just helps with the flow. Using proper sentence structure and word formation means it can be easily understood and read at a far faster speed without having to decipher some words.
...and besides its good to not get into bad habits. Job interviewers or School teachers aren't very likely to see your way of thought.
Those are my views at any rate.

strika234 01-31-2008, 07:16 PM double post
NecrisJ1MM 01-31-2008, 07:27 PM Eh, I'd like to argue a bit more with Rothbart about how txt talk doesn't necessarily mean lack of effort, and some other stuff, but I think this is good enough.
All in all, at least try to type correctly. In the long run, it will help your typing skills/speed and may even help you get a job you might not have other wise gotten, or whatever else.
...yeah.
Chrono 01-31-2008, 08:10 PM Oh my god man this is all about me. If i messed your forum up then i am sorry. All I was saying is that I don't feel I will change my ways to better suit your forum. This is not me being lazy.
I don't feel the need to do things your way so I wanted to stop.
That is just adding a couple of periods and deleting a couple of words and bam its readable. When i first read it i had to read it twice. If you were talking you would have ran out of breath half way through.
rothbart 01-31-2008, 09:02 PM Oh my god man this is all about me
No, it's not all about you, you're just the latest and one that's actually been vocal about it. Of course the forum isn't messed up, but people have complained to me. Let me make that point crystal clear... people other than me have complained to me about your posts.
When your posts bug me and bug other people (that's a plural word there) enough to ask me to "do something about it" then of course I'm going ask you to try a little harder to use proper English, grammar, and word choice. What would you expect me to do?
This whole issue reminds me of this graphic:
http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m95/rothbart_photos/interweb_memes/antitxttalk.gif
NecrisJ1MM 02-01-2008, 06:47 AM That graphic makes me laugh, for certain reasons. But I didn't realize that people were actually complaining to YOU (rothbart) about some guy's (unohisname) posts being "unreadable". Seems pretty stupid stupid to me that they'd do that, but eh. They are not that hard to read, and after a while you manage to read them normally. Funny stuff.
Joshthegreat 02-02-2008, 04:31 PM Wow I haven't been here in ages, though I listen to the podcasts all the time. They're freakin' hilarious!
I've gotta disagree with you, NecrisJ1MM. Using text talk can be justified, but with hardly any weight. Truth of the matter is, it takes time and effort to decypher and read. I'll demonstrate this with an example.
Check out these two sentences. One is in text talk, and the other in in standard english.
- da panda wnt nd urin8d on da floor. it wuz v funy. steven wuz a prat nd slippd ova. haha.
- The panda went and urinated on the floor. It was very funny. Steven was a prat and slipped over. Haha.
Disregarding the fact that nobody in their right mind would ever type this, take into account the ease needed to read the second sentence, and the concentration needed to read the first.
I feel sorry for anybody who finds it just as easy to read 'txt' as conventional english, because they've clearly let themself sink into a nigh-on illiterate youth culture of complete dunder-heads.
NecrisJ1MM 02-03-2008, 12:28 PM Thats not quite the type of txt talk I meant. I meant more along the lines using "txt talk" to shortening long words, using acronyms such as:
ATM= at the moment
BTW= by the way
Not full on txt talk where it seems you posted straight out of your phone. But whatever.
Using the letter "V" for the word "Very"? That's taking it a little too far.
Joshthegreat 02-03-2008, 04:41 PM ATM could mean anything from Automated Tellar Machine to Asynchronous Transfer Mode.

May as well add IMO which means: in my opinion. IMHO is the same, but the H stands for honest.
Most of the time when I see a post like that where no effort is put into making it easy to read I just ignore it. It's a different story if you try to add in grammar or good spelling but fail; if you put in the effort hopefully people will take you seriously.
I know I don't really follow proper grammar myself but I try to.
Hobo Hunter1001 02-04-2008, 06:59 AM It just helps people to take you seriously. You don't have to, I just don't see why you can't take the extra minute to speak well.
Rekenmachine 02-04-2008, 09:56 AM I only type in txt talk when I'm chatting over msn with someone I regularely chat with. They know my abbreviations and I know theirs. It makes things faster, especially in Dutch, where you have immensly long words for things that are so banal, they only deserve three, maybe four letters.
When I 'talk' ( read: type ) to strangers, I usually Capitalize and punctuate. Misunderstandings are way too easy otherwise.
Ala Douche 02-04-2008, 12:58 PM the biggest thing for me is, as rothbart pointed out earlier, it shouldn't take extra effort from the reader to figure out what you're saying.
i think 99% of your posts would be legible enough if you just used periods where you need to. i mean, look at me, i NEVER capitalize my letters to start sentences, because, yes, i am lazy. however, me being lazy when i type shouldn't impair the readers ability to understand what i'm saying. so the whole being lazy thing that people are saying, i could care less about, i just want to be able to understand what you're saying without having to read it a second time.

And I didn't call you whores. That's the charm of my language - there's no way to translate the sentences properly using an Internet translator (especially the Swearsaurus kind of things).

It's easier to ban people for being inconsiderate jerks and doing things against the terms of service when they're all lured into one free-for-all thread... it's kinda like that "flies to honey" saying... how's that go? :D
BTW, just kidding about the banning... for the most part.

Pablos102030 02-15-2008, 11:30 PM HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHA YOU ARE SO FUNNY
Seriously how did hobo get banned?
Ala Douche 02-15-2008, 11:48 PM i don't think we should open that can up. leave it between him and the admins.
NecrisJ1MM 02-17-2008, 12:12 AM Why does everyone care about HoboHunter's ban? Let it be. It was not undeserved. Seems like we got our own drama here at SG. Ha! Well I guess that shows that SG has grown a bit?
wackyiraqi77 02-17-2008, 12:35 AM The ban was deserved. The permanent wasn't, especially since he showed that he could be good when he came back but then was banned like 10 minutes later once Lono got on for no reason at all.
That's all I'll say about it.
Tinman 02-17-2008, 02:02 AM Ahhh! I go here to AVOID high school drama!
wackyiraqi77 02-17-2008, 03:10 AM Interesting decision, seeing as the majority of us are middle-highschoolers

Hopefully no elementary schoolers.
