Who else here has Jailbroken there iPod Touch/iPhone?

I finally figured out a few weeks back and its brilliant, i can now play old PS1 games, customize the look of my ipod or even read the bible on the bus. All on my ipod!

I was just wondering if anyone had any suggested apps to download, my favourite would be Labrinyth. You use the iPods accelerometer to make balls go in holes, its fun...

It was the first thing I did when I took my iPod Touch out of the box. As for recommended apps:

iPhysics - Awesome physics game, add iphone.r4mon.net/repos to your sources under installer and there should be a new category under "Install" for you.

iPhone Apps - Email, weather, stocks, maps, and notes. Just add
http://repo.us.to source.

Flashlight - This makes the screen brightness at full and the screen white, I use it while I plug the high def cables in the back of my T.V.

gpSPhone - GBA emulator

psx4all PS emulator (you have this already, but just wanted to name it for others)

SIP-VoIP - VoIP on your Touch, requires a modified microphone. (Not for iPhone as of yet.)

Apollo - AIM, ICQ, MSN, .Mac instant messaging

Those are my top apps, anyone else have anything to add?

How do you exactly "jailbreak" your iphone/itouch? I'm looking into getting an iTouch, and will probably do this...

Will you be able to download software/firmware updates for the device if it's jailbroken?

No you will lose your jailbreak if you update.

Some other good apps Mallico missed:

iRadio

Finder

TTR(with the GH III mod)

MusicQuiz

Moblie RSS

Last I heard, Apple, turned your I-thing, into a i-brick if you tried to update with the jailbreak stuff on it

Maybe not sure but ipods can never perma brick. You can always restore it.

I think it's practically impossible to brick it, even if the ipod does become unusable simply restoring it puts it back to normal.

@ploogle, you just visit jailbreakme.com on your ipod, click the download link and 20 seconds later your jailbroken. It gives you a list of hunrderds of different applications to download.

simple.as.that.

I have yet to download the iphone apps Mallico suggested so i will do that next.

Also, i havent yet been able to donwload any emulator (for ps1, gba, n64 etc) onto it yet. I tried but i needed to manually copy the folders into the ipod, which is hard because i have to unlock it. Does anyone know any jailbreak sources where i can download the games/emulator straight to my ipod?

Thanks.

Do you have a ipod or iphone cuz you don't need to unlock an ipod. Manually adding stuff to your ipod is easy as long as you have a FTP program. And if you have the latest install of installer all the emulators should be in there. Make sure you have the community sources installed.

I found the emultor and have downloaded it onto my ipod but im having trouble getting ROM's on there, and im not sure what a FTP prgoram is? When i say unlock i mean being able to copy stuff into it.

WinSCP is a program that allows you to view, edit, add, copy, or move the files from your computer to your iPod Touch, or vice versa.

How do the controls for emulators work? I mean, the thing practically has no buttons. Also, do the controls feel solid?

It depends on the emulator. Heres a screenshot of how GBA looks and plays on my touch.

Jailbreak allows for so much more than just emulators. Look at this portal themed touch.

Where do you get that theme? I'd kill for that.

There are some sources you can add that let you download games:

PSX: http://psxrepo.servegame.com/

GBA http://gbarepo.servegame.com/

NES http://markmon.mine.nu:90/iphone/repo/repo.plist

I'm pretty sure they have the BIOS files too.

I put all my roms on with CuteFTP, one thing I don't think was mentioned is that the when you use an FTP program you need a username and password to get into it. The username is root and the password is alpine (maybe the other way around sorry, I don't remember exactly.)

Thank you so much I couldn't find PSX games anywhere, and they take way too long to transfer over Winscp. Now when I get my ipod back (I'm grounded right now) I shall do that thing with the stuff. Recently it got kinda ****ed up and I had to restore it, thus losing EVERYTHING. Gah, I'm never doing a pre-official-release jailbreak again.

You're right Legend, it's not working right now. I looked around and found this posted on Feb. 2:

People have been going around lately trying to access the gbarepo and psx repo atwww.gbarepo.servegame.com andwww.psxrepo.servegame.com but for the past few weeks the repo has been down and the maker and owner of the repo hackeralert has been having a fundraiser to get new servers for the repository. Word on the street was that the repo would be up last week, then on monday they say it’ll be up and know they say the new server will be shipped by thursday and back up in 1-2 days after uploading the massive amount of roms prepared for the the repo. for more info check out the official website for the repo http://hackeralert.org/

So in short it should be up again this weekend. Sorry about that, I didn't know it was down.

Thanks Sinfulfate, I got it on my iPod now and I love it. I didn't even have to kill anyone, which is a bonus.

Well jailbreaking your iPhone/iPod Touch will break the warranty but here, we can fix most things ourselves (except when it's stolen) but yeah. So I think that jailbreaking the iPod Touch or iPhone is a good idea for homebrew. Every unencrypted system is build for homebrew. APPLE ARE TWATS FOR ENCRYPTING THE NANO AND NEW IPOD CLASSIC!

They won't even know it's been jailbroken if you remove all software and the jailbreak and restore it, so your warranty is never void.

On your ipod visit www.jailbreakme.com, and click the link at the bottom of the page to download the installer.

There should be a download window, when it reaches 100% your ipod will reset. Unlock it again and there will be a new icon on your home screen, installer.

When you click that you will have access to hundrerds of different applications, try to experiment with them all.

If you cant get it to download, repeat the process. If it still wont work, try going to another wi-fi hotspot and doing it again. Some wi-fi spots dont allow you to download stuff.

Yes, but you need a jailbroken 1.1.2 phone or touch.
To jailbreak 1.1.2, you need a jailbroken 1.1.1 phone or touch.
To jailbreak 1.1.1, go to jailbreakme.com on your phone or touch.
Go to installer, install oktoprep, then upgrade to 1.1.2 in iTunes.
Go HERE (http://rapidshare.com/files/72237156/1.1.2-jailbreak.zip) and download the files. Run windows.bat if you have windows or jailbreak.jar if you have a mac. After it is complete, go to installer and download BSD Subsystem version 2.0. Turn on Wifi and set ‘auto lock’ to never. Add the ModMyiFone source (http://modmyifone.com/installer.xml) to Installer. Find the 1.1.3 Dev Team Jailbreak package in Installer and then run it. Once done (about 20 mins - 50 minutes) your iPhone/iPod Touch will restart and you will be updated and jailbroken to 1.1.3.

Hope that helps the people who didn't bother to follow my link.

Well you'll need to jailbreak it (Install OpenSSH and BSD Subsystems from the installer after), then you'll need to install Summerboard from installer.

Now from here you can either pick some themes from installer, or if you want the portal theme you'll have to jump through some hoops.

The first hoop is downloading the theme, I believe you can find it on the iPod Touch Fans (www.ipodtouchfans.com) forums. After you have it downloaded you have to access your iPod using an FTP program like WinSCP or CuteFTP.

If you're using 1.1.1 or 1.1.2 put it here: /private/var/root/library/summerboard/themes

If you're using 1.1.3 put it here: /private/var/mobile/Library/SummerBoard/Themes

You have to add a certain source for the apple things such as mail.

The instant messenger application is called 'apollo'
You need the BSD sub system installed.

To get the subsystem you go into the 'system' thing.

And to get apollo, go into 'all applicatons' (something like that) and downlaod it.

Make sure to install the BSD sub system first!

It won't just appear you'll have to hunt it down.
It will be under the 'All Packages' and go on Apollo.

Wait I've just thought why you probably don't have it in your install.

Before you do the above,
Go onto the category under installer called 'Sources' and install the sources which are in there, and you will be able to find the above once you've done that. :)

what do you need to do to get the mail apps springboards?

You have to add a source, You know how to do that right?
Well yeah, The source you have to add is http://applerepo.com for the mail & maps etc.
(All the files within the thing say that its for Iphone only, just ignore it, as they work perfectly on the Touch.

multiple springboards?

I don't know that myself, Due to I can never get the firmware jailbreak things to work, So I'm just staying on 1.1.1

Hope this helps. :)

Easiest Jailbreak method, it's what I used after I restored mine last month. If you run into any trouble let me know and I'll help you sort it out.

As for best apps:
Mail

Weather
Snes4iPhone
GBA emulator

iXboxLive (if you have XBL)

Summerboard (custom themes)
MXtube (download youtube for when you don't have wifi)
Apollo (IM clients)
Flashlight (White screen, max brightness)
iPhysics
Coverter (conversions for just about anything you can think of)

Nothing really takes a whole lot of space. I have a ton of stuff on mine and it says 388.3mb under "Other" on the capacity bar in iTunes.

Well to put stuff that isn't and can't be added to installer you have to download it to your PC and SSH into your iPod. It's not as complicated as it sounds.

You'll need a program like CuteFTP or WinSCP to do it though. My internet is being buggy or I'd link you to a tutorial, you'll just have to find one on Youtube.

I'm going to be gone till Tuesday probably, I'm sure one of the other iPod owners can help you if you need anything else though.

If it fails do either one of these 2 things -
1 - Restart the ipod, sounds simple but it does work.
2 - Make sure everything is up to date on the Installer app. (do this by going to 'sources' in the installer and in the top left it should say 'refresh')

Okay, I have now committed to getting an iTouch, and now it's a matter of raising the funds. I can cover most of it by selling my current iPod and a few unplayed PC games, and the rest is just a matter of mowing lawns and getting little bits of cash here and there.

Now, a question about jailbreaking: I heard that the most reliable (and the only method virtually impossible to brick your iPod) method to jailbreak your iPod is to point the web browser to www.jailbreakme.com and download the installer app? What methods did you guys use to jailbreak yours?

I did use that site as I purchased my ipod when it was still at firmware 1.1.1 (thats the only firmware that website can jailbreak). As you are buying your iTouch so late on the firmware will most likely be on 1.1.4

For that firmware you just have to use a simple application on your computer with the ipod connected, and wolah, finished.

The program you use is called err.. ziphone? its something like that anyway.

okay let's try again. When your buy your iPod I'd reccommond buying it return from apple I did and mine is new no scratches or anything. When you buy it if you don't get the new software (reccommonded) you'll have to update it. Im not sure if 6 will work on 1.1.4. That picture is of a 1.1.1 ipod which didn't have the wiggle feature(that came in a later firmware) so we could use Customize to add 6 apps to the dock but that doesn't work on newer ipods.

This video shows how to get 5 dock icons on 1.1.3/1.1.4.

I had something similar happen to me, about 3 months after I had mine it started to randomly freeze and turn off. Then it wouldn't turn on for 5-30 mins after that, and even sometimes when it turned on it would freeze during unlocking.

I had no idea what had caused it. I uninstalled all my recent updates and applications but it still happened. Eventually I just restored and it works fine.

Any idea what caused your iPod to crash? Also if you know that please state your firmware.

WHAT???? which website? and is it the same customize already in my installer?

Customize 2.0 Beta. The one that lets you download themes straight from your touch over wifi.

Heres how to install it.
THIRD WAY-Customzie 2.0 BETA
8.1c. Go to http://customizeapp.com/
8.2c. Click Register, or if you already registered, log in and skip to part 8.4c.
8.3c. Register by entering valid information, YOU HAVE TO enter a valid serial number or else it wont work, to do this, on your iPhone/iPod Touch go to your settings app, then tap general, then tap about, and scroll down a little bit and you will see your Serial Number
8.4c. After you sign up and log in and add the source:
http://customizeapp.com/plist/installer
NOTE: Customize 2.0 BETA will not work if you didn't sign up with a valid Serial Number, If you didn't will get an error saying "Cannot Connect To Themes Server, Either Wifi Is Off Or You Did Not Register Your Device" or something like that, so don't think you can just add the source and download Customize 2.0 BETA, it wont work
8.5c. Hit The Home Button and Let It Respring

I think you can clone your SIM card and do that...

On another note, it looks like they basically permanantly hacked the new iPhone: http://www.hackaday.com/2008/07/15/iphone-dev-team-shows-ssh-access/
They haven't done anything much with it yet, but this means we should be seeing a new, better jailbreak in the near future. This hack apparently would take a hardware update to get around, as it can access the device at root level somehow.

I could fit all of my good music and a few movies on 8 gigs and still have room for more! I'm waiting until the 2.0 unlock, though, just to see if I'd rather jailbreak on a 2.0 or a 1.4.

It can jailbreak the 2.0 firmware and unlock it, but it only fully works on the old iPhones and iPod Touches, they can't yet unlock the iPhone 3G. The authors of WinPwn (http://winpwn.com) tell us to "expect a release within the next few days!", so I'd suggest you to wait for it.

You can downgrade the software by using an older version of iTunes (http://www.oldapps.com/itunes.htm) (7.7 won't let you downgrade), then downloading a 1.1.4 iPhone or iPod Touch software from the Internet, and (if you have an iPhone) using KiPhone (http://iphone-freak.com/en/page1/page1.html) to downgrade the baseband version.

Yes it can. I am on Rogers Wireless (Canada) and I have access to all my features on the phone. I've had it since January, and Rogers didn't officially start carrying the iPhone until July 11th. Unlocking your phone allows you to use it on any network. The only thing I don't have is internet anywhere, I do need to have a wi-fi connection I can connect to. But that's more because Rogers charges wayyyyyyy too much for internet data plans.

Has all the information you'll need to jailbreak your iPod Touch/iPhone on both Mac and Windows. But be warned, 2.0 has very little apps compared to 1.1.4 etc, however it is simply a matter of time before old apps are ported over.

Personally, I'm still holding out because the GBA emulator and most other applications i regularly use aren't available yet. However Zodttd (inventor of most installer emulators) is currently porting the GPS emulator over, along with Quake 1. So it shouldn't be too long.

On the ITOUCH you have to pay to upgrade to 2.0, but the IPHONE gets it for free I think.
& with the pwnage tool, I think it can only pwn the new iphones I'm not to sure about the itouch's.
I wouldn't advise upgrading to 2.0 unless you do have money to waste, if you stay with the older version (1.1.4) you can get the same apps + a lot more & better ones for free.

Very few. Some of the old apps known from 1.1.4 were released on the AppStore (and most of them are paid :/), and the rest is still being ported. Some (like Kate) are rumoured to be released along with Installer 4.0, so very soon. The only useful applications found on Cydia right now are Boot Neuter, BossPrefs, BossTool and maybe Insomnia. From the emulators, only the NES one has been ported. Much more decent apps can be found on the AppStore, but most of them unfortunately are paid (not much, from $1 to $5, but it's still real money). I'm eagerly waiting for the new Installer and the apps that it will bring!

Actually, Cydia is based on a much more reliable and functional framework that with just a little more work it could easily outperform Installer. But as of now, Installer gets more attention from both the developers and the repo owners, and thus is much more useful.

The biggest differences in Installer 4.0 from the previous version will be dependencies (i.e. when you install a package that needs another one to work, both will be installed), which Cydia had from the very start, and multi-threaded tasks (i.e. you can minimalise or cancel any ongoing download/update/loading).

Installer is the platform to download applications from, basically it's the homebrew version of Apples 'official' App Store.

Older firmware generations (1.1.1 - 1.1.4) that were jailbroken all used Installer to download custom apps, but when firmware 2.0 was jailbroken Installer had yet to be ported over to the new 2.0 firmware (old apps need to be ported over to new firmware because they wont work otherwise) so Cydia was created to fill the void. That's what I'm told at least.

Installer/Cydia just appears as another icon on the iPod/Phone's dock. The custom applications are download from there.

I used to have a jailbroken first gen iPhone and I loved it. I even unlocked my father's iPhone at one point. It was nice having tons of programs to use and customizing the look with Summerboard. I did have a scare one time where I almost bricked my iPhone, it was stuck on a continuous reboot when two programs conflicted and crashed all the time.

I since have 2.0 on my 3G iPhone and haven't had the urge to jailbreak this one. I heard ppl having nightmares with their new iPhones, a friend of mine traded his 3G three times till things worked fine for him. I guess I've been lucky to not have any crazy problems. I'm interested in Cydia and the new Installer, although I've been told I"m not missing much with Cydia.

Mm.. I think I've bricked my iTouch.
It was going through this phase a month or so ago where it wasn't to fond of turning off/staying turn on.
And now it just doesn't even turn on, it won't restore either + the Pc/xbox won't even pick it up.

Oh & yes, it does have battery before you ask that.

Well the Xbox never could pick it up. Well I don't really know, all I can offer is the same advice you'd probably find at the Apple support site.

You've probably tried it already but hold the sleep and home button at the same time for about 5 seconds. There is one other method that I know has worked for at least one person, it's not recommended though: Hit the back of your iPod and plug it in to your PC.

Good luck :(

1. Turn off touch.
2. Hold down home button while inserting usb cable, do not let go until the screen turns on. Itunes should recognize the ipod in force restore mode.
3. Restore.

There is no way to "brick" an ipod touch that I know of, short of throwing it into a wall.

even read the bible on the bus. All on my ipod!

Oh my gosh! You can read the Bible on the Bus!? Sweet! haha

Yeah. I don't own an iTouch or iPhone but I don't think I would jailbreak it. I mean with the new update so I can download apps right to the phone/ipod I don't think I need to jailbreak it.

The only thing it would really offer is customizing the appearance of my iPhone/iTouch which doesn't really interest me. I bet Apple will include that option soon though.

I jailbroke mine first day I got it a while ago. Without the jailbreak and iTouch would HAVE DEFINIATLEY NOT been worth $400.

If anyone has questions about firmware 1.1.4 or before, PM and I'll help you out.

Some news!

WinPwn 2.5 should be released this week (http://winpwn.com/index.php/Main_Page). It will finally bring a decent GUI (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graphical_user_interface), 2.0.2 support and automatic updates.

Meanwhile, you can try using QuickPwn (http://blog.iphone-dev.org/post/46800837/my-little-pwnies-dressage), which just got the ability to 'pwn' the 2.0.2 firmware and a GUI. It also includes a beta version of Installer.

Also, Installer 4.0b5 was released (http://ripdev.org/2008/08/installer-40b5.html). This brings us closer and closer to finally being able to use Installer on the 2.0 firmware.

The number of useful applications available on Cydia as well as the App Store is increasing. Hopefully, in a month or two all of the 1.1.4 functionalities will be available on 2.0.

EDIT: just updated to 2.0.2. It's much faster and more stable than 2.0, works like a charm! Also, the new Installer looks brilliant... if only some actual applications other than Kate were possible to install using it, it'd be great

Anyone got an easy way to downgrade back to 1.1.4 from 2.0.2? I've tired Quickpwn but that crashes, WinPwn but it keeps telling me to put it in recovery mode when it already is. I've tried restoreing to the 1.1.4 firmware but iTunes keeps giving me errors.

Apparently another way to downgrade is to uninstall iTunes (which i dont want to do because it'll erase me music settings) and then install an older iTunes software, then restore my iPod to 1.1.4.

Im getting really sick of having to re-sync my iPod because of constantly putting it in recovery mode.

Anyone got any help?

Shift+restore in itunes, browse for firmware. Should work but I've never done it before.

move all your music to a different file (NOT ITUNES) then erase itunes and find the old firmware, I'm just to lazy to do it myself

As i said i've tried that,i had to delete iTunes and then install iTunes 7.5, then restore with 1.1.4 firmware but i got an error message...

Quickpwn is apparently the easiest method to do it but it keeps crashing, is it because i have Vista?
