View Full Version : Professor Layton and the Curious Village
George McBain 02-15-2008, 02:04 PM Anyone got this or plan on getting it? I know DSfanboy.com has had a hard-on with this title for awhile, almost on par with their massive one for Hotel Dusk:Room 215.
I like puzzle adventure games that rely on text a lot, such as the Phoenix Wright and Hotel Dusk games. I have seen that this has been getting high scores around the interwebs and think I am going to head to Best Buy to pick this up tonight with my discount coupon.

SWSilentkiller 02-15-2008, 03:17 PM You know at first I was a bit skeptical about this game, now it looks pretty good.
Ploogle 02-15-2008, 03:20 PM That actually does! I thought it was a port of a PBS Kids cartoon or something, by the look of the art.
Tinman 02-15-2008, 04:41 PM I would not only play that, but also watch it on T.V.
Mallico 02-16-2008, 05:29 AM I was just about to make a topic for this, I love this game. I didn't think I would, but it's really fun and addicting.
Also, from the hilarious guys at Penny Arcade (www.penny-arcade.com):

SWSilentkiller 02-16-2008, 09:33 PM Dammit I only have 20$, and my brother is paying the other $30 for Brawl, I do not have enough money for this or Apollo justice, oh how I wish I had a job. Also this game kind of reminds me of Phoenix wright (not the puzzles but the text parts)
Emophia 02-17-2008, 06:09 AM I never have to buy my DS games...
George McBain 02-17-2008, 12:54 PM I never have to buy my DS games...
You are very cool; Neither do I have to, but the ones that are spectacular or deserve to be bought to move numbers, I do so ... like Hotel Dusk, Picross, this ... so we can get more of them.
Emophia 02-17-2008, 01:07 PM I never said I don't buy DS games, just that I don't have to too play them.
I have a large collection of bought DS games.
Hotel Dusk was one of them, I think I gave it away, or traded it in...
Mallico 02-17-2008, 02:43 PM This game is REALLY hard, has anyone finished it yet?
George McBain 02-17-2008, 05:17 PM I would not only play that, but also watch it on T.V.
They are actually making a movie based on Layton and Luke, so that should be pretty cool if done right.
I never said I don't buy DS games...
What? But ... that is what you said. I don't know what you mean; do you mean you get free review copies or that someone buys you your games?
Tinman 02-17-2008, 09:56 PM They are actually making a movie based on Layton and Luke, so that should be pretty cool if done right.
sweet.
strika234 04-09-2008, 05:05 PM should I write a review for this?
i just beat it...
Mallico 04-10-2008, 02:37 AM Would be an interesting review, I think you should go for it if you have the time.
Most people totally ignored the game because it's a puzzle/riddle game. Just throw in some examples of questions and then put the answer(or even the hints) in spoiler tags under it.
I really enjoyed this game, frustrating at times (matchsticks..) but that's to be expected.
Samueltehg33k 04-10-2008, 03:17 AM yes i would love to see a review im thinking of getting this game
Mearnsonator 04-14-2008, 07:10 AM I had it and beat it (all puzzles)... then traded it out on gameswitch.
I loved it, though there is no replay value, so I suggest trying to get it on trade.
The art is great and the music creates a good atmosphere (and never gets annoying/old). With all the hidden puzzles and bonus puzzles I think there were over 200 unique puzzles/riddles (with a weekly download as well). My only problem was that I played it too much (re: obsessively). If you are the type that gets frustrated easily or only plays for 30-40 minute bursts you'd get way more mileage out of this game than I did... as I found myself playing it instead of the console/pc games and flying through it all in a couple weeks. The puzzles range from very simple to nearly impossible and amidst the puzzles are a decent amount of riddles as well. You don't have to clear all the puzzles to advance the story (which is surprisingly compelling, though has nothing at all to do with the riddles).
Anyway, that was my experience, I highly recommend it if you're into puzzles/riddles and want something with a truly unique look and feel, it's a great choice, but with only one new puzzle per week, not something that will keep you coming back once you've cleared the game.
one95876 04-14-2008, 04:56 PM Same as SW Silentkiller, I thought it was some cheesy puzzle game but now it looks good, I might pick it up.
PrimevilKneivel 04-22-2008, 06:00 PM I just got, it's awesome!
strika234 04-22-2008, 06:52 PM heres my review:
Story:
the story in this game is decent, and though I did guess most of it before it happened, it still came up with some twists that I didn't expect. The cut-scenes are awesome (though few and far between) and altogether, though the story is not the main attraction, it is a good incentive to keep playing.
Gameplay:
the gameplay is basicly this: you got to character X, who will only answer your question if you solve a puzzle. The puzzles range from easy to real stumpers, but you can buy hints if needed, And I played the whole thing with at least 10 hint coins the whole time. Just tap randomly around the background and you're bound to find a few.
there are also hidden puzzles that you get by just talking to everyone, whether they're related to the story or not. You only need to complete 70 puzzles to beat the game, but there are over 130 puzzles to complete.
Overall:
Though you'll only play through all the puzzles if you have OCD or love puzzles, the game is definitely worth playing through, and the story and cutscenes keep it interesting.
RENT.

I just finished this, what a fantastic game. Two brilliant plot twists at the end as well. It only came out here on Friday.
Kirbs 11-12-2008, 12:41 AM this was the most addicting game and yet it did have an insane twist, i really wasn't a fan of the end. For all of those who have finished you know what im talking about... work work work... all solved done
SpecJoe Magic 11-23-2008, 11:50 AM You should definitely get it since you enjoy games such as Phoenix Wright and Hotel Dusk. It has a surprisingly engaging story, and the puzzles are fun, despite some of them being annoyingly difficult. Of course, the solutions to all of the puzzles can be found on the Internet, so you shouldn't let difficulty stop you from playing it. Also, you can download additional puzzles that are separate from the main game if you have access to a WiFi connection.
GasolineRainbow 11-27-2008, 01:25 PM I'm actually considering this game even when i had no real idea of what it was about....i still dont....got good reviews though.
strika234 11-27-2008, 01:47 PM the game has a good story, but it essentailly involves you solving puzzles. if you like that, then its awesome, and even if you get stuck you can look on the interwebs for it...
its imo a great DS game but you should definitely rent it as there isn't much replay value once you've beaten it...
janzantinga 11-27-2008, 02:24 PM this game sounds somewhat erotic..."curious village" makes you wonder
Abelmisi 11-27-2008, 03:47 PM This is one of the best DS games I've played. The style and FMV's are awesome.
