So What do you think was the biggest controversy ever to hit the world of Videogames? Personally I think it was the Hot Coffee mod that was in GTA San Andreas. That or the Mass effect Misunderstanding. So what do you think is the biggest videogame controversy?

I would think anyone making an announcement for Duke Nukem 4ever would be the biggest scandal .

No but seriously I think it would be the GTA SA hot coffee thing, since for a couple of weeks I did hear of it in the actual news, then in the gaming news it was posted everywhere.

Probably Hot Coffee, but I did hear quite a bit about Manhunt on the news.

Yeah Manhunt gets too many headlines for being the spawn of satan - there's been so so many games as violent or worse over the years - I mean I grew up playing MK2-MK3 with the immortal "FINISH HIM" moments - aaahhhh.... brutality!

And on the Mass Effect nakedness side of things - did anyone ever see that Playboy game on the PS2? It's nothing new!

Scandal? I dunno about that. Hot Coffee would be the biggest 'scandal'.

As for the largest video game controversy? I'd say Mortal Kombat. If I remember correctly, that game is the reason we have the ESRB now.

Hot Coffee, and though it isn't really a "scandal", Manhunt.

Hot coffee, although I don't think that blew up as much as Mass erre...effect did.

I always thought it was Custer's revenge that influenced that.

EDIT
After the release of games such as Mortal Kombat, Doom, Night Trap and Lethal Enforcers (which used the Konami Justifier), there was much controversy over video game content.
Never mind. You are correct.

I'd have to say Night Trap was the biggest scandal. It was one of the prime reasons for the creation of the ESRB, involved Senate hearings and a whole bunch of other craziness in the media and gaming industry.

Hot coffee doesn't even come close imo...

I'd say Hot Coffee or Mortal Kombat.

Wasn't the Night trap controversy a bigger misunderstanding then the Mass Effect controversy?

Sure was. It was based on no facts at all. The game had no nudity or anything. The same sort of fools who flipped out over Mass Effect did the same thing to Night Trap, only it went even further. It's actually pretty unbelievable.

Here in the UK the was a kick-off with Manhunt when a guy got beaten to death with a hammer.

Thing was it was the victim who played the game - the attacker wasn't a gamer.......does show that gaming can be bad for the health though....

Yeah, I remember that now. It was kind of a double whammy on them with Night Trap and Mortal Kombat. Certainly bigger than anything very recent in the industry. I distinctly remember a guy saying something along the lines of "Regulate yourselves, or we'll do it for you." I think it was Lieberman.

Wow you really have to wonder how they can do this type of stuff when they were completely wrong and never even played the game

Well, the controversy that caused the forming of the ESRB was a good thing in my opinion. It certainly stopped games like Manhunt 2 and Playboy Mansion being sold to 10 year olds.
That said, the entire myth that games are for kids only needs to be swept away as soon as possible. If Mass Effect did have a full interactive sex scene in it, it wouldn't be as controversial if everyone realized that the games marked 'M' for mature are made for the 17-35 demographic, isn't marketed towards children, and isn't allowed to be sold to children.

The biggest videogame scandal of all time? Atari, ET and how they were allowed to release a travesty of a rushed, unpolished and unfinished game on the unsuspecting gamer.
