SPOILER ALERT! If you have not finished Mass Effect, or plan to play it in the future, you may want to save this episode until later on. We discuss many possible spoiler topics in Mass Effect as well as the outcome(s) of the game. You have been warned. SPOILER ALERT!
One of the only games that we, as a podcast team, have ever universally embraced, is the RPG that has in some ways changed the landscape of the genre forever. We're talking about Bioware's Mass Effect. Now that we have all had a chance to finish the game, we thought we'd spend some time talking about why we enjoyed this incredible title, and the things we found most interesting about it. Doc, Lono, and Dave each dish their unconventional strategies for conquering this universe, and their very different experiences within the story.
(There is about a minute of dead air at the end of the show. You're not missing anything... It was an oversight.)
Listening to our show is easy, and you can get it delivered in a bunch of different ways.

First. And I love these kinds of podcasts, where you can actually tell spoilers, because that's the best way to talk about a game.

I saved Wrex using charm. There's 2 options in the conversation where if you use charm or intimidate you can talk him round. A few other parts of the game can be changed with charm/intimidate, like when you assault Chora's Den and meet the 2 guys who tell you to stop. If you charm them they go away and you get Paragon points for saving them(you have to fight them otherwise).

As far as I know, Wrex can only be saved via charm/intimidate or by doing his family armor quest to gain his trust.

Not sure what the hell I was doing there. I hated to lose Wrex. What's sad is that he's all tough and stuff in battle but Ashley killed him with ONE pistol shot. How the hell does that happen? What can't she do that in battle. I think she's holding out on me.

Yeah...I was able to find all the keepers the first time. I specifically choose NOT to find them now on my second play through for the paragon points. I maxed out my Intimidate skill the first time through and I've noticed that I have a LOT of new dialog options throughout the game when I'm using the same character. FYI, Hardcore difficulty isn't that hard when you use the same character you beat the game with the first time.

Yeah. When you choose to start a new game, you have a new option other than custom character and default character. I think it says something like "Old Service Record." By choosing that, you can use any character you've beteen the game with a second time around. (S)he starts with all the weapons, armor, and experience as when you finished the game. However, you have to re-allocate all your team's skill points.

yea, you can play it through again with the same character. But it would probably be more interesting if you made a new character with different specialty, like biotic instead of soldier.

Unless your a complete achievement whore and have to have those 2 achievements for reaching level 50 and 60, witch only be done with a second play through.

edit: GOD damit Maulin...you just had to post a reply aswell, sheesh.

When the chick killed Wrex, I made up my mind that somehow she was going to die. So I left her on the planet when the nuke went off.

At the end if you chose not to save the council. When the battle ends you do not have to rebuild the council you can have the humans take over. Which than makes your character bring up a dialog saying he let the council die so humans could take over.

Cool show makes me want to play the game again. Did any of you guys read the book before playing the game?

If you guys haven't played Star Wars KoToR or Jade Empire and loved Mass effect you should definitely go pick up them up. In some ways there better than Mass Effect.

First of all I want to say that I enjoyed this podcast very much. I really like it when there is in-depth talk about a specific game. It's especially great with a game like Mass Effect because I get to hear what others experienced on their journeys through the game. It's fun to compare what you did with what I did and notice what was the same and what was different.

I would like to point out a few things based on what I heard on the podcast:

On the planet where you plant the nuke, you have a choice of either Kaiden or Ashley to send with the Salarians. Whoever you send with them ends up fighting on the AA tower, and the other one sets off the nuke. The way you were talking on the podcast made it sound like you thought that one of them always sets the nuke and the other always ends up on the AA tower, but it depends on the choice you make before you infiltrate the facility. For example, I sent Ashley with the Salarians and Kaiden stayed with me. Kaiden started planting the nuke once we got to the designated site, and Ashley called for help from the AA tower. I headed for the AA tower and then had to make the choice whether to go back and save Kaiden at the nuke site or continue on to the AA tower to save Ashley. I decided to go back and save Kaiden. If I had chosen to send Kaiden with the Salarians before the mission began, he and Ashley would have swapped places (Ashley at the nuke site and Kaiden at the AA tower). You can still choose to save either one regardless of where they end up. You either fight Saren at the nuke site or at the AA tower, and the nuke always goes off.

Also, one of you said that Garrus has the same weapons skills as Ashley. That's not true. Garrus is trained and can level up in Sniper Rifle and Assault Rifle but not shotgun and pistol whereas Ashley is trained and can level up all 4 guns.

The chick with the mask is Tali.

As an aside, my wife played the game as well, and she and I picked different back stories for our characters. I noticed that she heard different dialog than what I heard in a few places as well as encounters with characters that I had never seen because of her character's different back story.

I was amazed by the game. It was unlike anything else I've ever played before. Bioware has set a new bar as to what an RPG can be. The story telling was incredible, and I really felt an emotional connection to the characters. I actually involved myself to the point where the decisions I was making reflected how I would react if it were real life. That's a major accomplishment for a video game. I'm really looking forward to the downloadable content.

Thanks for the great podcast and the chance to respond. Keep up the good work!

I think when you visit the Citadel after reaching a certain point in the main story there is a side mission you can start that differs depending on your personal history.

Also, I am KILLING that krogan. He sucked!!!

In case some of you didn't know this, there's more to gain from getting the achievements than the game first lets on.
Whenever you unlock a weapon or skill achievement, you're able to select one of those skills when you make a new character. In other words, if you get the Sniper achievement your first play through, then make an Adept for your next one, you get to select the Sniper skill to be added to your Adept's character sheet. This goes for all weapons, biotics, and tech abilities. You only get to choose one, though, but it still helps.
For the Party and Discovery achievements, you're given a permanent stat boost when they're unlocked. For example, the Tali achievement will net your character a 10% reduced cooldown on Sabotage and AI Hacking. Kaiden's achievement gives you a 10% reduced cooldown on Lift and Throw. The game completion achievements unlocks gamerpics, weapon damage, added experience, etc..
The coolest unlockable is the Rich achievement. Getting this adds the best weapons possible to your ship's store for new characters. They're a bit costly, but can make the Insane playthrough quite a bit easier.

Great show guys, more specials like this would be pretty cool.

I'm usually on the fence when it comes to shows that concentrate on a single subject, as they are going to be something you really like or really hate. In the case of your Mass Effect Podcast, I must say I really liked it. It helps that I love the game a great deal, and its always interesting to see how other players have different experiences with the game, or in the case of Mass Effect, aim to get into the pants of different characters.

I must also add that I have yet to officially beat the game, unfortunately. When I played it, I had been checking it out from work and had to return it before I got to the final confrontation, but due to the fact I was so close to the end, I decided to listen to the podcast anyway, just to see what all of your experiences were like compared to mine, and I was quite surprised by some of the things that were discovered (such as the early, minor sex scene) that I didn't see, just by the choices I made. This podcast, on the other hand, has revamped my desire to actually get my own copy. Because, even though I'm close to beating it, I know for a fact that if I owned the game, I would at least play through it a few more times in an effort to do things differently, as well as make a female character, since I already made the male.

Speaking of the sex scene(s), like Doc, I was denied seeing the sex scene, but not because I didn't talk to people. I'm more of a long term RPG player, so talking to everyone every trip is pretty much second nature to me. My problem was that I was hitting on the chick you can't do anything with, Tali. I aimed for her for two reasons; 1) I was really curious what her race really looked like (and if we had to be in some weird ass bubble, since she has to be in that enviro suit) and 2) she was my favorite team character, not just for her skills, but her commentary as well. I pretty much had her with me on every mission, while Liara tended to be my other team member. Because of the job class I chose, this gave me equal Tech, Bionics and Melee, and made every battle go pretty quickly. Even the battle with the Matriarch wasn't all that bad. I got knocked down a few times, but none of my team died and I never felt like I was in a desperate situation.

Oddly enough, I should also point out that I was able to max out both the Paragon and Renegade bars with where I'm at in the game. Possibly because I did as many side missions as I could possibly find? I was actually shocked by this due to the fact I figured you would only be able to max out one or the other, maybe max out one and half way fill the other, but not both. My only grief with it is that it's more of a marker of how you are playing the game then actually having any effect on the game. For example, it would have been cool if by having more marks in Renegade, that people, in general, would react to it by showing a bit more reluctance to deal with you, or more willing to answer your questions since you are known to be a lose cannon. I guess with as much as they did think things through, they still missed a few points ... even though I can't blame them with as much as they DID do with the game.

With my experience I have had so far, I agree that its easily in my top 10 games I have played this generation of gaming, which speaks very highly of it, since we do have a nice collection to look back on so far. I'd also, if I was a reviewer, give the game no less then a 9 out of 10, with what I have experienced with it at this point. I'd still have to make a final decision after beating it though.

EDIT: BTW, loved the "I drink your milkshake!" Happy to know I'm not the only one that has seen the movie ^_^

This was a good show. You guys should make more shows like this in the future (when other new and good games come out, of course).

I swear I combed every inch of the citadel looking for those bastards... There must be some really hidden dudes.

There's one at the top of the ramp that your ship is docked at.

There are 21 total. Here are the ones I remember:

- 4 in the Citadel Tower
- 2 in C-sec, one all the way west and the other all the way east
- 1 in the med bay
- 1 in the red corridor
- 1 in Flux near the slot machines
- 1 or 2 more around the upper markets
- 7 total around the Presidium, I think
- 1 at the end of the docking ramp

I left a few out. I think there are some more around the markets somewhere. I'm not sure. At any rate, I found them all.

And I agree with you, Doc: Mass Effect is definitely one of the best RPGs I have ever played. It certainly ranks among my top 15 favorite games (of any genre) of all time. Maybe even top 10.

The way to save Wrex is by having one of either Charm or Intimidate maxed as much as it can be when you talk to him on Virmire. This is one of the three points in the game at which you can get the Achievement for talking your way out of an "impossible situation." There is one more while talking to Saren on Virmire. The last one is (kind of a big spoiler if this didn't happen for you when you're talking to Saren at the Citadel):
If you either Charm or Intimidate Saren into killing himself at the end, so you only have to fight him once at the end instead of twice.
I played almost completely Paragon on my first playthrough as a male Soldier. My second playthrough was on a female Engineer that was almost completely Renegade. Now I'm on my third playhthrough, on Insanity, as a female Adept. I will lean toward Paragon this time, but since I already have both Achievements I'm not going to choose a Paragon answer if I like the Renegade one better.

Some of the Renegade choices were hard to make. I didn't like killing the Rachni queen on Noveria, or killing the Council, but I wanted to see how it affected the outcome of the game if I did. The choice with the Rachni queen doesn't really change anything, but of course there are two different endings for whether or not you save the Council. I preferred to save them, having seen them both: I think it would be selfish of the Alliance to just take over and rule everything. Rather than remain the most dominant race (which humans became became at the end of the game IMO), I think the Alliance should work with the other races to build their fleets up as well.

Now how will they do ME2? I would assume that your old characters can be used, and all of the choices that you made on those characters carry over and have an effect on how the sequel plays out. I just hope the game isn't destroyed now that EA is publishing it. I'd rather the people at Bioware spend more time making great 360 game then losing time to making it work on every platform in existence. I don't have a problem with it being multiplatform as long as the quality of the game itself is not affected, though.

I know a minimum of 3 playthroughs is required to get 1000/1000 AP, but I think it will really take closer to 4. You can get all of the Achievements in 3 except for the one for reaching level 60; I don't think 60 can really be reached in just one playthrough on a character, and the 3 playthroughs must all be in different characters of different specialized classes to get all of the other ones.

Who did everyone think was the most interesting character? I was most interested in either Garrus or Wrex. Both of them have pretty cool stories behind them; Garrus's dialogues on the Normandy are about his past work at C-Sec, and Wrek tells a lot about the nature of Krogan race. Tali's stories about the Quarians are pretty interesting as well.

Did anyone else think that Shiala would have made a great party member? She's the Asari that you meet after you kill the Thorian. I felt she was more like an Asari than Liara was.

It doesn't have to be maxed out, I did it with about half full charm. He can be saved without charm/intimidate if you do his family armor quest because he trusts you.

Really like the podcast. Nice to focus on one game, especially as it was my favourite of last year.

The 1st time through I played as a vanguard male war hero, went Paragon, mostly teamed with tali and liara, and had sex with ashley.
Total Play Time: 51 Hours

The 2nd time I played as a red headed female soldier, survivor of an attack, went renegade, mostly teamed with Wrex and Garrus, and had lesbianisms with Liara. Total Play Time: 30+

I saved wrex both times - it definitely makes it easier to do his side quest.

SpecJoe Magic is completely right about the whole Kaidan/Ashley situation.

I can't believe Doc & Dave didn't go to the Moon. Thats one of the best side missions and gives you the best reward (and a nice view)

Also make sure you go back to the Citadel after you leave and before you complete the main mission. Make sure you speak to people like the Doctor in the Med lab and the C-Sec acquisitions officer.

The Podcast made me want to play through again but I'll try and hold out till the DLC coz I've got a lot of other games to play!:D

I'm surprised that they didn't go to the moon either. Seeing as the game took place in the milky way galaxy, I was quite curious as to if I could go to earth. So I found where our solar system was (aptly named Sol System).

While I wasn't able to go to earth, I was pleased that I could land on the moon. Was quite rewarding just to see the view of earth from the moon. Made me smile.

First off, great review, I agreed with you guys on a lot of levels. But heres what i have to say about the game.

First off, the mako tank, what was up with that thing. I mean they gave you no tutorial on how to use the thing, then they say "go at it". I mean hell, it wasn't until the lunar (moon) level that I realized that you can use a cannon. I was using the machine gun the entire time. So yea, i had issues with that a lot. I did how ever enjoy the tank once i got a hang of the controls, but by that time, it really didn't matter.

Next, I am guessing that you guys never used the Persuade or intimidate option in your leveling process, because there are lots of options that open up to you in speech and conversations within the game. In fact there is an achievement where you have to use Charm or Intimidate to solve an imposable conflict.

Also, did you wait till the end of the credits? It gives a big hint to the next Mass Effect game.

I really enjoyed this game, and your podcast except for one thing, you guys liked Ashley? I mean really now guys, she was the biggest b****h in the game next to the matriarch. Also, were any of you able to save every person that was infected by that plant thing? I "accentually" killed off like 3 of em.

Heres my scoreing

Music and Sound: 8 out of 10. Although the music was spectacular and the effects were extremely robust, the lack of music when you were exploring random planets made me dread the fact that I'd have to listen to the drone on the tanks engines.

Graphics: 9 out of 10. Near perfection on the effects and graphical systems. I only had a few issues with the shadowing draw line, it made shadows arrear before you sometimes. Maybe it was just my disk, but once i was running through a level, and my screen went entirely dark, because the shadows drew in, and overlayed my sight.

Environments: 5 out of 10. Initially, I was blown away but the magnificent environments, but soon was thinking, "wait, wasn't I in a level that already looked like this?"

Controls: 7 out of 10. The "on foot" controls were nearly right, besides the "back" button being grenade, it was a huge problem to throw a grenade in the heat of battle, and accidentally press the Xbox button. Also, the lack of tutorial for the Mako Tank was sorely missed.

Voice Overs: 9.8 out of 10. There is almost nothing that i can say bad about it. The game had a big star list. With the voices of actors like Seth Green and Keith David, it was outstanding. But being that nearly all the voices of a certain race sounded alike, it was a bit of a recall to the horror that it was that every female human in oblivion sounded the same.

Replay: 8 out of 10. For a single player rpg, its replay was awesome. But slight things like, a infinite dungeon, or monthly quest addons would have been loved.

Overall: 8.3

Hope you guys agree, if not, tell me!

@rayanaminge - I leveled up my charisma or persuade stats all the way up. That's how I saved Wrex ( I also found his daddy's armor) and got Saren to kill himself. Otherwise, I agree with you mostly.

Funny thing, I went home and beat the game within hours of listening to the podcast. My jaw still dropped at the ending when he popped himself.

Great story.

My Shepard was a Vanguard. I wanted to use both biotics and weapons, but I was kind of peeved that you can't choose your weapon specialization. Sure, the shotgun was cool and I loved the pistol, but it meant that Assault Rifles and Snipers would never be useful to me.

My morality playstyle was doing what I wanted, not holding to a certain ideal. I tried to be nice to good people, but I was mean as possible to assholes. Not to say I was an ass back to them, but I would try to steer them to the right path by shouting at them, because who would take me seriously if said "Excuse me, Mjr. Kyle. Could you, ya know, stop leading this cult of deadly biotics?" I was more "Listen! You're going to get a lot of people killed over nothing! Stop this shit now, or I'm going to put you down myself."

As for my romantic interest, I went straight for Liara, aka the blue chick. Ever since I heard the chance of hawt alien on human action, I wanted to see that. Who cares about more human on human action? I get that every night from my *cough* browsing.

Still, when it came time to choose between Kaiden and Ashely, I was a bit torn. I tried as best I could to save them both, but it comes down to only choosing one of them. I chose Ashley because Kaiden was kind of a boring character and I couldn't leave a girl to die by a nuclear explosion. I still felt bad about letting Kaiden die, and the music on the ship afterwards didn't help.

For the longest time, I had no sympathy for Saren because I had read the prequel novel and knew what a jackass he was. Still, I felt sorry for him towards the end when you can convince him to fight against Sovereign and give fighting a chance. I was left in shock when he thanked me and put a slug through his head.

Mass Effect was great and I can't wait for the DLC, next novel in the summer, and the sequel in 1-2 years. I say eff Star Wars. ME is now my sci-fi lady.

Lol maybe she knows his secret weakness.

Wrex: "Damn... Bullets... my only weakness"

My first character was a Vanguard and he's by far my favorite. Lift + shotgun = . It did leave me with a predicament near the end of the game though. At the last zero-gravity bit I had a turret in my way, and after I single-handedly demolished the Geth, I was like 100m from it with no cover along that 100m, out of effective pistol and shotgun range. Ashley and Garrus both had sniper rifles, but they just refused to kill it. I ended up charging straight at it, firing my shotgun, nearly it, getting shot and going down to minuscule life before finishing it off. It was pretty cool.

I absolutely loved this game. Sorry to start this thread up again but I guess people will be listening to this show at different times, as and when they finish.

I saved Kaiden also simply because I didn't want the Kroegen to die (I was warned by a friend) but it was still a tough decision. My party consisted of Garrus and Wrex (Kroegen).

Did anyone else set their teammates to use their powers as and when they want? (through the options). I found it helps a lot.

Basically, I played it the same way as Dave. Role on more DLC and Mass Effect 2!

EDIT: Project Director for BioWare, has said that players should keep their Mass Effect save-files, because decisions made by the player in the first game will continue to have influences on their character in the sequel.

That IS cool!
