View Full Version : 2007=FPS, 2008=? Tinman 02-24-2008, 06:31 PM Personally, I think that the games that are coming out this year have a very nice mix of genres. Yes, lots of FPS titles, but more of a mix than not, with RPGs and RTSs. What do YOU think 2008 will be the year of? PacManPolarBear 02-24-2008, 07:35 PM FPS again. Just like 2007, 2006, 2005 and so on. FPS is THE dominant genre in video games right now, and shows no signs of dieing of either. Which sucks imo. I'm all for a good shooter, but I was sick of them getting all the attention 8 years ago, and it is only getting worse. animathias 02-24-2008, 07:41 PM Action Adventure. Devil May Cry 4 Lego Batman Saint's Row 2/GTA4/MGS4 (Clumped together, because they can be also be classified as shooters) Too Human Grimm Prototype Ninja Gaiden 2 heyfling 02-24-2008, 08:37 PM Action Adventure. Star Wars: Force Unleashed Lego Indiana Jones Indiana Jones Bully:Scholarship Edition(I know it is a port) God of War:Chain of Olympus iPlayPC 02-24-2008, 08:39 PM Action, except that covers like everything, doesn't it? Tinman 02-24-2008, 08:48 PM FPS again. Just like 2007, 2006, 2005 and so on. FPS is THE dominant genre in video games right now, and shows no signs of dieing of either. Which sucks imo. I'm all for a good shooter, but I was sick of them getting all the attention 8 years ago, and it is only getting worse. Well, even then, all three of the next BIG FPS games have something unique. BF:BC has fully destructible environments, Frontlines brings massive games to a console, And Vegas 2 will be one of the most tactical shooters in a while. But their are a lot of RPGs and action adventure games coming out. It's just that last year nearly EVERY big games was FPS. RAGNAROCK 02-24-2008, 08:50 PM I know this is a stupid question but...but can someone tell me what FPS and RTS are? I know they are gaming gender but which. Maulin 02-24-2008, 08:53 PM FPS = First Person Shooter RTS = Real Time Strategy Tinman 02-24-2008, 08:53 PM FPS= First person shooter (CoD4, Halo) RTS=Real time strategy (Sins of a Solar Empire, C&C) RAGNAROCK 02-24-2008, 08:54 PM FPS = First Person Shooter RTS = Real Time Strategy thanks definetly FPS and if they make more for the wii they will sell even better. Ploogle 02-24-2008, 08:55 PM Spore. Finally. Maulin 02-24-2008, 08:58 PM OMG! Ploogle changed his avatar. I saw it, and I thought, "Who's the newbie?" On topic: I'd like to see it Strategy. I mean, we've got Halo Wars, Civ Revolution, and I'm sure there are others. I just like the genre. Lord Butters I 02-24-2008, 08:58 PM Frankly, it seems that these days if a straight-up shooter hits the market it almost always takes second place to more complex games. The "ZOMG" games of 2008 are almost unanimously action or stratigy games, not straight shooters. If a game doesn't incorperate some variety in its gameplay it just gets boring. piston11792 02-24-2008, 10:39 PM FPS, if were talking about counsels, and i personally love fps games Ploogle 02-24-2008, 10:49 PM OMG! Ploogle changed his avatar. I saw it, and I thought, "Who's the newbie?" :D It was too good to pass up! NecrisJ1MM 02-26-2008, 11:28 AM 2008 just might be the FPS year.. yet again. But does that really matter? Even though 2007 was the year of FPS, and just about every year before that, that did not mean that fantastic games on the other genres did not come out. The year of the ___, is just for article headlines and end of the year round ups. All other genres that are in the shadow of FPS still get adequate(sp?) attention and coverage. PopTrogdor 02-26-2008, 11:56 AM Its going to be the year of user created content, LBP yaaaay Flint50 02-26-2008, 03:17 PM FPS: Doom really made the FPS genre really popular with it's engine style programming and advanced lighting. MMO: Everquest was crazy popular and is what lots of companies tried to copy after seeing the money it racked in. RTS: Dune II revolutionized the genre to what it is today with Tech Trees and different races, then Warcraft made it really popular. RPG: I'm not really certain here, but the Ultima series were very popular and I'd pick those as the ones that made it popular. ProNinjaX 02-27-2008, 12:49 AM 2008 = everything else codespace 02-27-2008, 01:20 AM I think that this year we're going to see a further blurring of the lines that divide the genres. We've had shooter RPG's, puzzle FPS's, strategic card games, etc. I think 2008 will be the year of ... even more interesting games. Griffin999 02-27-2008, 02:20 AM I agree with ploogle, it will be the year of the Spore Canuck 02-27-2008, 02:33 AM Honestly, from what I've seen, 2008 has a little bit of everything. It has FPSs, action games (ie DMC4), open-world games, RPGs and more, whereas 2007 was basically just shooters. If I had to pick one though, I'd probably go with the open-world game, honestly. GTA 4, Mercs 2, and everything in between. Spore is pretty high up there though. The ultimate mix of every genre. PopTrogdor 02-27-2008, 06:32 AM If I had to pick one though, I'd probably go with the open-world game, honestly. GTA 4, Mercs 2, and everything in between. yeh, like prototype and infamous as well solarmystic 02-27-2008, 05:10 PM 2008 = Please let it be the revival of honest to goodness RPGs, please! Chexd 02-27-2008, 05:14 PM Sadly aslong as the best selling games are FPS i am going to have to say "FPS" :( Canuck 02-27-2008, 11:17 PM yeh, like prototype and infamous as well Right, forgot about those. Looking like a great year for open-world games. Paladin58 02-28-2008, 12:13 PM I'm going to guess that 2008 is The Year of the Sandbox, due to sequels of popular sandbox titles like GTA IV and Mercenaries 2 coming out. Or, I guess you could also say 'Year of Open Worlds", because we're getting those in those two games, we have it in Frontlines, we're gonna get it in Battlefield: BC, Fallout 3... A number of big-budget titles are going to pique many gamers' interests. A Rabid Moose 12-15-2008, 02:33 PM I think it'll be zombie survival horror. Ala Douche 12-15-2008, 02:44 PM /begins slow clap for the massive necro-post Killgraft 12-15-2008, 03:24 PM http://uploads.libertylounge.net/files/resurrection.jpg A Rabid Moose 12-15-2008, 06:11 PM Eh. I just think it's funny how everyone in this thread was wrong, in retrospect. KumiKaze 12-17-2008, 03:08 PM How can it not be zombie survival horror shooters? It seems every other game that came out had some form of zombies/monsters in it. Even WOW got into the zombie fever, not to mention GTA IV (either still working on it or released it yet, don't really care either way) Hungry Luma 12-19-2008, 11:01 AM I think it was the year of the RPG, just for the fact that two nice triple A titles where RPGS. Paradigm13 12-21-2008, 12:00 AM I'm thinking the likes of Mass Effect 2 and Final Fantasy XIII will pave the way for the RPG to have a comparable year to the FPS, but Halo 3 ODST and Bioshock 2, and Cod MW2 will help FPS have another strong year. We also may see some great independant games via Live and the PSN, as that genre had a strong showing this year. (Disclaimer: this is assuming all of these things do come out in 2009) Doug77 12-21-2008, 08:53 AM For me, it would be RPG. Fable 2, Mass Effect, Fallout 3 etc. T3mpus Fugit 12-22-2008, 08:36 AM Personally, I think RTS. RTS games on consoles are gradually getting better, and if Halo Wars is as good as it is meant to be then I can see a lot of Developers leeching off it's ideas. I also wouldn't mind if Square Enix decided to slip FFXIII in there, and then it would the JRPG's year for sure! T3mpus Fugit 12-22-2008, 08:38 AM Ooops I thought that we were talking about 2009... I suppose I can't really comment, as I now know the answer :D Flint50 12-22-2008, 01:04 PM FPS's still flooding the market. One thing to notice is we've seen more Indie games and casual games spring up. Since the Wii, everyone's trying to get a piece of the new audience and brining out more simple games through Live Arcade, Steam, PSN, Wii Ware and Virtual Console. Been a lot of retro re-animation. I don't think they've overshadowed the FPS yet, but they are picking up speed. IceKatana X 12-22-2008, 02:02 PM I believe its a mix of everything there have been plenty of great games released this year. |
