Welcome to the first iteration of my new weekly series called “Gaming Nostalgia.” In this weekly series of articles, I’ll dig deep into the history of video games and discuss notable releases and news stories. Go ahead and let me know if it sucks in the forums.

Even though GDC and TGS fell on this week a couple times in the past, news from those conferences weren’t very notable, so this week I’ll focus on a few big releases.

On March 19,1994, Super Metroid was released for the Super Nintendo in Japan. Many gamers, including myself, saw this as the pinnacle of the series. Not many other games have received the same amount of Praise as Super Metroid. It shows up on top ten lists to this day, across the internet, and you can still find recent speed runs posted on YouTube.

Fast forward two years to 1996, when Resident Evil found its way to the Playstation in Japan on March 22nd. While Alone in the Dark started the Survival Horror genre, Resident Evil took it to new heights with its creepy atmosphere and story. Sadly, the game was most notable because of the horrible voice acting that plagued it. Lines such as “Here’s a lockpick. It might be handy if you, the master of unlocking, take it with you.” or “You were almost a Jill sandwich!” These lines often provided some unintentional comic relief akin to the “all your base belongs to us.”

March 16th, 1999, is a date that many role-playing gamers will never forget. It’s the day that Everquest opened its doors to the public. After some network issues almost derailed the launch, Everquest went on to popularize MMORPG’s in the West. While it certainly is debatable, I personally don’t think games like World of Warcraft, or Guild Wars would be where they are now without the little stepping stone known as Everquest. Spawning multiple expansions, quite a few spin-offs, and one sequel - Everquest is one of the most known MMO franchises in the world.

Well, that’s all for this week. I suppose March isn’t the biggest month in the industry no matter which year you look at. Stay tuned!

Very good. I love the way that it is written. And it's true, everyone hates March.

Well thank you, Tinman. I wanted to get used to the research and writing before Spring hits, that's when I'll have much more to talk about.

If anyone has any suggestions for games you'd like me to touch on, just send me a message or email. Any year 2007 and under is fair game.

Super Metroid and Resident Evil! Two of the greatest console games ever made! As for EQ... I shudder to think of the time I invested in that game...
