Despite wave after wave of MMO titles hitting store shelves and promptly dying faster than a canary in a poison filled mineshaft, developers continue to attempt to bring any successful franchise into the MMO sector of the industry. Following rumors that Call of Duty may one day become an MMO, it now seems that the Tom Clancy franchise may also attempt to become “massive.”
Find out what Ubisoft may be planning to do with their new found “Clancy” control after the jump!
Last week Ubisoft acquired the rights to the “Tom Clancy” name in almost every form of media. They now control all rights “on a perpetual basis and free of all related future royalty payments” to create Clancy “video games and ancillary products including related books, movies, and merchandising products.”
Ubisoft did not disclose how much they paid for the famous authors name but implied that not having to pay royalties would have “an average positive impact on Ubisoft’s operating income of a minimum of 5 million euros ($7.7 million) per year.” If that isn’t an ego booster I don’t know what is.
Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot has also implied that a big factor in the acquisition was that the deal allows Ubisoft to explore a Tom Clancy inspired MMO.
Guillemot said: “We will be able to adapt the brand to new formats, in particular the MMO format, where the royalties were a big thing holding us back.”
Though no specific game was announced, the very idea has gamers scratching their heads trying to figure out how well a Tom Clancy game would transfer over into the MMO world, which is pretty much the same reaction gamers had when Activision CEO Bobby Kotick implied the same thing may happen to Call of Duty.
It’s important to note that Ubisoft now has “complete editorial control” over the Tom Clancy games which would allow characters from one series to appear in another.
Guillemot said: “It will allow for cross-fertilization of characters between games like Super Smash Bros.”
I was never a big fan of Tom Clancy games. Not because they lacked merit, rather it was because I am not a big tactical/stealth shooter fan. That said, given the rabid devotion to the Rainbow Six Vegas titles, even within the SG community, I’d say the possibility of Ubisoft attempting a Clancy MMO is pretty friggin likely.
However, I very much doubt any new MMO, be it CoD or Clancy inspired, can succeed without an incredible investment in terms of both money and time.
Now that’s something I’d love to see Ubisoft pitch to their shareholders.
