Okay you may remember a thread i started forever ago about not being able to get xbox live... well i convinced my parents to allow me to write a proposal of things i am willing to do to get it, they are firm christians so number 1. on the list is

1. no more M rated games
2. a limit of some sort on playing time

any more suggestions

SWSilentkiller
04-17-2008, 10:30 PM
wow #1 is really going to limit what games you get on the 360. Anyway sorry but I do not have any tips.
Wait your 18? and you can't play M rated game because of your parents? Wow that really sucks

If he lives in their house he could be 40 and still have to live by their rules.

But seriously dude, what are you going to play on live if M games are off limits? Sure there are plenty of good non M games but enough to justify paying for live?

Instead of that I'd offer up paying for the internet service or some way to show that these games aren't corrupting you (assuming that's what their concern is).

Here are some things you may want to add to the list.
1. Only use it to play with friends
2. It will not get in the way of other things(school, work, ect.)

If I think of more I will post them.

Hollowcow

Challenge them to a dual! Tell them if you can watch the website below longer than they can they will have to lay off. In all seriousness though without being able to buy M games Live is a bit useless. You and I both know there will be some killer M games coming out. My advice is live without Xbox live until you are out of the house, as tough as that sounds.

Cant you get a fairly mild M rated game, then sit down and play it with one of your folks to show them what they are really like.

If you actually get them to see what you are playing, they might change their minds (and possibly join Hardcore Christian Gamers).

You can also buy M Rated games and paste this on the cover:

But seriously, just say you'll make up for all the gaming you do, like "If you let me game for 3 hours straight, I'll do the dishes." or something like that.

It's 40 quid in the UK, so I would say it would have a 10 quid markdown in the US...

$70? Surely you could stretch to that...

Here is one more tip for your proposal, only play on Live when they are around.

This is just a tip if your parents do allow you to get Live, don't go out buying a years subscription right away because they may change their mind a few months after if they don't think you are following the guidelines that you're proposing.

How about pay for it yourself?

Replace no M-rate games with no mic. Missing COD4 would be too much of a shame.

Being a parent myself I'll tell you this will likely still piss them off, just because you see it as extreme cases doesn't mean they will too. You'd be entering an agreement with them with a built in loophole that, frankly, will only work if they don't catch you breaking the agreement. Why bother then, when they figure out what you've done they'll probably be insulted that you tried to pull one over on them.

If you want to come to an agreement with them sit down and talk to them, discuss why they don't want you playing these games and figure out how to show them they don't need to worry. Maybe you can start with a heavy limit and after a month or two if there is no reason for them to worry, you can get more freedom.

If you want to be treated like an adult then act like one, don't go sneaking around like some video game legal mastermind.

You ain't no Matlock, you know.

What is it about Live that they don't like? Is it the potential for strangers cussing up a storm? Point out there are (and actually use) the feature that only lets you voice chat with folks on your friends list. I didn't have to go through an agreement with my parents to come to this conclusion, I did it for my own sanity. Wide-open Xbox Live isn't all it's cracked up to be... friends-only chat with a selective friends list is much better.

1. COD4
2. Halo 3

5. Gears of War (although it's for sale)
so i'm set on the M games category for a while

Im sorry but that is F***ing stupid, If it is honestly causing this much hassle there is no point....

Whats Xbox live without voice chat ? you might aswell play bot matches on your own
But seriously it isnt even worth it....

I think you've got a good plan there, providing your brothers can keep up their end of the deal. It shows maturity, and consideration of what is more important than gaming as well as your parents wishes and concerns.

When negotiating it's a good idea to not expect all that you've asked for, your parents might have more concessions that they want you to make, don't get upset if they don't see your plan as fair as you see it, though based on the maturity you're showing here I suspect you'll be fine.

1. No longer buy M rated games because I'm going to pay my friends to buy them for me
2. Use xbox live features to protect myself and others from hearing all users and limit it to a selective friends list And by "protect myself and others" I mean to viciously slay anyone that dares oppose me in a game
3. Play xbox only after homework is completed. meaning after I complete my homework tonight I'm free to play Xbox forever! Muhahahaha!
4. Attend every water polo practice unless i am SERIOUSLY ill. Oh noes, I feel seriously ill. I need to play some Xbox

In addition my brothers will adhere to the following rules

1. When Parents say xbox is off... TURN IT OFF! and five minutes later, turn it back on!
2. Play xbox live with only a selective group of friends such as people we know in real life and to increase my "known in real life" friends list, I will start hanging around with some real douchebags in real life so I can play openly on Xbox Live
3. xbox after homework notice I didn't say "homework is done" here... man I'm getting sloppy near the end of this...

This Contract goes into effect when all of the above mentioned parties as well as my parents sign below which is hopefully before they notice the massive loopholes in the contract

I'm a parent that has gotten a couple "carefully constructed" answers from my kids over the last year or so, which leads me to analyze exactly what was said more and more as they get older (and more importantly smarter!)

It stings getting outplayed by your kid...

Then again, I can use that tactic myself... we're not going <insert place they want to go> until after your room is clean.

*cleans room*

Can we go now?

No, I didn't say we'd go when your room was clean... I simply said we were not going until after your room was clean. Next year is after!

Then I laugh and take 'em. I guess in a way, I might be training them for this kinda crap...

Don't mention M games.

my suggestions:
1. I will pay all the expenses for Live
2. I will review games to be sure they're appropriate for me before purchasing them, and I would like you to respect my choices unless you have a serious problem with the games I choose. (This allows you to still buy M games, but addresses the fact that some games are bad.)
3. I will mute any and all gamers who use foul language while playing
4. I will set my zone to "family" or "pro", so I will only be matched with players with sportsmanlike conduct
5. I will keep my grades up, and won't let gaming take away from time with the family or with friends
6. I will find Christian clans and groups to play with, so that I can work with people with the same beliefs as me
7. (Optional) I will share Christ with the gamers I play with, and be a strong witness for those I'm playing with

Buy a wireless internet connector for your 360, get live (together, about $160-180), then you are sorted. Pawn off some old games, raise the money, buy them, and don't tell your parents you're using their internet...

Or...

Or...

Ignore your parents and get it anyways... You're 18 now, so it doesn't really matter anyways....

Simply convince them that not all M rated games are bad. I'm in junior high, and they let me play halo and other non-sexual, non-grotuetous games if I convince them. Also, keep your gades up, and, when asked to turn off the xbox, just turn off the TV and not the 'box.

I formally propose that on this the 22nd of April am hereby allowed to play Xbox live at home using our high speed internet. In response to this freedom of I commit to:

1. Review games to be sure they're appropriate for myself before purchasing them. You're a legal adult, I personally think it's a little odd to use that terminology. I wouldn't mince words, if you're doing it to appease your parents, say "you would deem appropriate" because I really doubt it will truthfully be you only playing games you thought were appropriate, otherwise, why the contract and/or trust issue?
2. Use Xbox live features to protect myself and others from hearing all users and limit it to a selective friends list Again here, I'm getting the "trust issue" vibe... if it's via headset, nobody else can hear them... if might be best to not even approach the "protect myself" angle insinuating there are dangers there to begin with...
3. Play Xbox only after homework is completed. should be a given, if they need to see this in writing, fine.
4. Attend every water polo practice unless i am SERIOUSLY ill.
5. Pay all expenses for Xbox liveshould be a given, if they need to see this in writing, fine.
6. Will mute any and all gamers who use foul language while playing Along with #2, I think this one might do more harm than good being brought up in the first place... you might as well say you'll agree to mute all child molesters that attempt to meet with you at <insert local gathering place> while I play <insert game you intend to buy> because it'll probably draw pictures in their mind that might've not been there before. The art of drawing up good contracts is to find a mutually agreeable middle ground, not give away the farm.
7. Will keep my grades up, and won't let gaming take away from time with the family or with friendsshould be a given, if they need to see this in writing, fine.

In addition my brothers will adhere to the following rules This is your contract. What happens if your brothers don't uphold these rules? I'd question whether you should be writing their behaviors and responsibilities into a contract you're drafting, but that's just me...

1. When Parents say Xbox is off... TURN IT OFF! should be a given, if they need to see this in writing, fine.
2. Keep Grades up! should be a given, if they need to see this in writing, fine.
3. Get Eagle
4. Play Xbox only after homework is completed should be a given, if they need to see this in writing, fine.

This Contract goes into effect when all of the above mentioned parties as well as my parents sign below I would draw out agreeable consequences as well if you're going to all this trouble.

wow, i thought i was almost done! guess not... I want to show that i'll be mature, and not be another dick on live but i don't want them to think there are a lot of them... any thoughts on doing that?

I am the only one who plays the really violent stuff... but my brothers like to watch me play games so there is where the too violent issue comes into play, I have Gears of war, COD4, Mass Effect, Dead Rising all hidden because i don't want them playing them because they are too young, (12 and 10) for that much violence and my parents agree... Which is why i don't have GTA I want it but i could only play it when i'm the only one home just like Dead Rising

in a couple weeks, im moving in with a friend, so, i wont have to worry about her anymore.

I'm not going to read nine pages of crap before I post. That's just the real answer. Your parents are obviously control freaks who seem fit to force their values and beliefs on you when it comes to stuff that they don't approve of. You are then left with three options.

1.) Disobey them

2.) Change their mind

3.) Compromise

4.) Move out

The first one you are most likely against. The second one is most often impossible with people who have such deep-set beliefs as your parents. I suggest that you don't compromise, as that will just make your parents feel as if they have even more control over your life than they do now. Therefore, the only option left is to move out.

Gragh. I hate it when people who have only seen the extremists of a certain group assume the rest who are above-average in their commitment must follow the same behavior pattern. My parents are deep-set in their beliefs, but they have no problem with me playing *most* M-rated games. I have friends with parents like JJMAC's, and it seems to me that the common reason for their dislike of these games is the same as any uninformed parent: they're not informed, or are but badly. You have folks like Fox News and Jack Thompson to blame for this.

I'm not saying I agree with his parent's choice, but I think it's crossing the line to say he should "move out." As a famous SG podcast member once said..."It's a GAME."

Yeah, now that's called ridiculous extremism. In JJMAC's parents' case, it's just ridiculous. Nothing really extreme about it. Although, I'm sure any parent would tell you that they don't exactly look kindly on people who question their parenting methods.

But shouldn't you have said "roll in it?" As a comic member of the forums, I would have expected this from you... I'm disappointed...

As for the "Parental Contract Loophole", I had a small epiphany. Why the f**k should you listen to your parents about this? It's your 360, you're paying for Live, it has absolutely nothing to do with them, except for the fact that it's their internet. They can let some of it be used. You're a f**king man, for god's sakes! I say, (in as friendly way as possible, without meaning to insult), show that you have some balls and actually take a stand. Do what you wanna do. All this contract BS is ridiculous. Drawing up a contract to play games? WTF?! This has stepped over the line, peed all over the line and erased the line into the ridiculous... Come on! What is up with this? Yeah, it's all well and good that you want to respect your parent's wishes, but you're 18. You are old enough to just go ahead and tell them to f**k off and tell them that you will do what you want... I say, "Go colonial on their asses and stand your ground!" THIS IS SPARTA!!!

I have to agree with cod and hobo just get live and when they confront you just grin widely, extend your middle finger and say "bite me" then continue playing. I can understand their concern for your brothers welfare that’s just good parenting but they need to loosen the chains at your age you shouldn’t be playing frikin water polo unless you actually want to, get a lock on the door to keep your bro's out and do what ever you want... and that includes porn and definitely includes Xbox live. I know you respect them too much too just tell them to f**k off I probably wouldn’t say that either but they are also showing a serious lack of respect towards you as a man when they treat you like a little kid. remember that they were not born as parents they have never done this before you are the first 18 year old they have ever had (I presume) it will be difficult for them to ever stop treating you like their baby so they need you to let them know when enough is enough by simply standing your ground. You don’t even need to be nasty just be blunt and tell them you feel responsible enough to make your own decisions and thank them for caring so much.

Oh and if you don’t fancy that, the contract seems pretty sound good luck keeping taps on your brothers tho:wink2::lol:

Ya, if you're 18 then you should know what is good for you by now. It sounds like your parents are having a hard time letting go. I understand that it is their house and you should follow their rules. However, I would just wait for the next couple of years and just move out. I'm sure Xbox live will still be there. All of this contract stuff is stupid. It's just going to create more problems. Especially if your parents find out if you used a loophole. Parents don't really play by the rules when it comes to legal technicalities. I say just play offline for a little longer.

Maybe you should hold them hostage, that way when the SWAT team is trying to negotiate with you, you can ask for infinate XBL subscriptions.

not a bad idea... but the whole jail thing kinda creeps me out... plus infinite xbox live subscriptions doesn't guarantee xbox live access

:lol:Aren't you married and have your own kid? why are you talking about your parents?

My parents were strict until I was around 16. Before then I wasn't allowed to get some M rated games. The GTA series was one of them. I didn't care at the time because I wasn't that into GTA and I had plenty of other games to choose from.

Don't know what happened when I turned 16... They weren't as strict anymore...

I'm sure you can work something out since you are 18... just try harder. Going behind their backs with loopholes will just make them angrier at you and not trust you for further things

Just leave it and every so often say Hey dad/mum have you had a chance to look at that contract yet?

But you see, the humor is that he had to scan all his posts to see if he said that... because even to him, it sounded plausible. He couldn't immediately deny it and say "I wouldn't have said that!"

You may want other people's opinion on his idea first.
Hobo doesn't have the best track record for logical decisions.
And that would most likely backfire heavily on you.

if you do this, you will be going behind your parent's backs, betraying their trust. You don't have their permission for this, and so doing this without them saying it is okay after them saying they have to give their permission will bring you bad consequences. Wait it out. When your Dad gets home, tell him that you would really like him to sit down and spend a few minutes reading your Contract and give his opinion on it. Remind him that you've spent alot of time making it, and that you've waited for quite a while regarding his decision. Showing maturity in your actions will help convey that you will show maturity with XBL.

Anyways, I'm just saying that if he continues to just ask, his Dad will most likely just ignore him as he has been. Even worse, he might start viewing the asking as immature pestering. They may view it as a betrayal, but standing up for yourself is better than letting his Dad maintain his dismissive attitude. I really don't think that it's a maturity thing anyways. He's 18. If that doesnt work just leave it out in obvious places i.e Kitchen table, Re(fridge)rator (Not sure on the spelling as we dont say it like that here:P)...

When I said "wind up like randomperson", I was meaning you'll turn into him. :D Making useless posts that contribute nothing to the site, while being unusual in that he spams with pretty good grammar.

How are you getting on with the Loophole Hunt, JJMAC383?
Have you finalised an agreement yet, or do we continue to wait for the final decision?
