On Monday April 21st from 0200-1000 PT Xbox Live will be offline for maintenance. As a result, the ‘My Xbox’ section of Xbox.com will be unavailable, and the Xbox forums will be in read only mode (you won’t be able to post.) The remainder of Xbox.com will be available.

This is for maintenance, there are no new features on your that will appear on your Xbox 360 console or Xbox.com when the service comes back online. This is server maintenance only

Apparently it is being done to set up the system for an anticipated "Large" influx of new members from the release of GTA4.

They may be going a bit overkill with the caution, but hey, what can you do.

To be honest, I'd rather that then having 2 weeks of not buing able to use live for the amount of traffic making it break down. At least they seem to be doing something to prepare for it this time round..

Agreed, it's only eight hours, even i was online during that time i doubt a lot of my friends would anyway, at least their going to be prepared for the 29th

Exactly, it's a lot better than having problems for weeks like it was after Christmas.

Better safe than sorry. I'd hate to get GTA 4 and then have everthing overloaded when I go to try that baby online for the first time.

Allthough I think on the 29th I'll just play singleplayer mode for 44 hours then take a break xD

You'd think that they could slowly work through them in small chunks disabling some to work on but leaving the majority of them functional.

It's not that simple Hobo. Unlike MMO games, Xbox live servers operate in sync with each other. So if one is down, it can end up affecting the stability of other servers. Not all mind you, but others will be down with the one server in question. So it's best to take them all down. I'm sure that only has to deal with North America though. Dunno if it's the same issue for other countries.

I think they are covering the XBL server room in concrete with reinforced titanium walls in an effort to stop the HQ imploding once GTA4 arrives.

I think its more to do with the fact that the whole world jumped back on at the same time. just play Crackdown for a couple of hours and it will fix itself.

It will be fine, the only problems are with Matchmaking in the origional Xbox, the service status is at max, so it is almost certainly just because everyone jumped back on at the same time. Major Nelson says :"A few folks may still be seeing sign in issues. Engineers are looking in to this at this time" and "Keep an eye on the support page at Xbox.com for updates: http://www.xbox.com/en-US/support"

With the foundations of their PSP games and Saint's Row, it's looking to be pretty badass.
