I have no aftermarket cooling fans of any sort for it.

The first time it died it was inside my entertainment system so I figured it was airflow, after I got it back the first time I stood it up on a little nightstand next to my entertainment system so airflow definitly wasn't a factor in the last two times. :(

I know the RRoD probably get talked about too much but after 3 times I felt I had a good reason to rant a bit lol.

I think it's cool to get your frustration off your chest but I think it would be nice for every one if it could be kept to one thread.

We don't need a new thread every time it happens.

Polls like this paint a narrow picture. I prefer the "How many 360's have failed on you?" polls to this. There is (unfortunately) more than one common cause for 360 failures. The DVD drive and RRoD are both quite common. I've lost one to both.

Not only that, but I got kicked in the nuts by their customer support while I was down. Hence my animosity toward them and their sh*tty hardware.

I don't hold any general across-the-board animosity to the games on their platform, but their platform can go f*ck itself for all I care. My experience has sucked and I use/play it only as a last resort for the game I'm wanting to play.

That sucks; i enjoy the games for my 360 but the hardware problems I'm having are getting ridiculous, half the time it doesn't read the discs until i clean them 6 freaking times.

PS3 Hardware > Xbox Hardware. Fact.
Live owns Network though :)

Just to retort (and I'm not trying to convince anyone of anything, just stating my opinions).

If I don't (frequently) play online multiplayer, or chat... there's very little difference to me. I play Warhawk probably 95% of the time I play an online multiplayer game... it's not a platform choice, it's a game[/ I] choice. Xbox Live doesn't really offer [I]me anything special that justifies the price I've been suckered into paying twice now... I understand it does offer some things important to other folks.

If PSN suddenly had counters to all the features XBL had that PSN didn't... I'd still not be using them. I'm trying to point out that while I am biased, that bias plays no part in my opinions on the subject.

I've had 3 Boxes get the red rings and i am still loving my 360. I just like how Microsoft knows that America is number 1. So they care about us more than Japan. the other 2 consoles come out with tons of games exclusive to Japan, that we may never see here. Plus i just dont get some of the japanese games . I dont get there horny little perverted games with unnaturally large breasts , that have more physics in the that the motion of the rest of the game.

Plus the games are better

Ok, now, I'm getting tired of RRoD threads. Before i used to laugh, now it just annoys. People, you bought an Xbox, probably aware that the RRoD was an issue, you took that risk in buying it, therefore you should deal with it when it happens. I'm getting slightly tired of it. You can say, dont read it then, doesnt matter if i read it or not, its still there, and people still cry about it...surely you should have prepared yourself for it? If not, suffer in silence and deal with it, rather than whine about it, when everyone knows.

This isn't me being harsh at all, im not trying to be, im just saying, you chose to buy a 360, and the consequences of it, so yeh, get over it.

Oh and the perverted games are basically all wii and ds games....

My first 360 got killed by Dead Rising. Anytime I put the disc in it would play for around 2 minutes then freeze with the vertical dashed lines.

I never returned mine to MS I just got a new one from the store so I have no idea if my old one ever came back from the dead.

I have a weird problem on my 360 where it won't start up the first time I turn it on. I try again, and it turns on. I occasionally get the one red ring, but I just restart it and it's fine.

There's a bunch of different meanings for the different combinations of lights, your composite cable was probably loose or something.

As for the RRoD I have bought so many games for my 360 that I'd be forced to get a new one if mine died... well I could sell them but I enjoy them so that's out if the question. At least I could play another console if mine was off for repair. I'm be WAY more annoyed if it was my only system and it died.

When my first one died it was pre PS3 so I demanded a new one from the store, there was now way I was gonna wait for it to be fixed and it was still within it's 1st year of warranty.

My first one RROD about a month after i got it in 2006. It RROD on Gears of War, and I got it back about two weeks later after the update for the annex multiplayer game mode which I dearly wanted to play. My second one was last year, I got the E74 error code about TWO days before Christmas! But not all hope was lost, because I went and bought an arcade box, and now I have two x-boxes, one I play, and one for backup.

I never got red ringed, but my box did die. I had rented Strangelhold(in my opinion, good concept poorly executed) and all of the sudden i got an "unreadable disc" message. I figured, oh well, its a rental, no biggie, then none of my games worked, then i sent it in. I missed the launch of Halo Jesus, which i was hooked on until Halo Anonymous came out(aka Call of Duty 4). So i was pretty pissed off.

And how exactly do you know that? I've sent mine in, came back fine and only took a week from drop off to delivery. How would it possibly be worse to use a warrantied repair over a suspect internet rumor that is designed to overheat your system, something that is bad for all electronics?

It was obvious to me that you'd never heard of it that's why I mentioned that it was not only old news but a bad idea.

I like how there are no numbers in that article... they did use the word "huge" when describing the problem though... so it must be true.

Please don't perpetuate the FUD this article is trying to spread. On the whole, the PS3 is remarkably reliable and stable. Comparing this to the RROD is like comparing people that have seen bigfoot to people that play videogames. You'll find people here and there that claim to have seen bigfoot when it's much more likely that they've simply read about it or they know a friend of a friend of a friend, etc.

You pretty much have even odds that the next videogame player you meet will have had (or personally know someone that has had) at least one Xbox 360 fail on them.

The comparison isn't there to be made... but the contrast is. This isn't a "defense of the PS3" thing, it's a "take a closer look at what's actually being reported" thing.

I've had one RRoD so far. I promptly got my money back, replaced the 360 and got a 3-year product service plan. If it happens again I will likely replace the system, but I'll probably save up money for a PS3 and make the 360 a secondary/last resort system. If it craps out a third time, then that's it. I'll trade in any accumulated 360 games and replace them with PS3 versions.

I got one this Christmas and my brother has an Xbox 360 with the Zephyr from before and I must say I think that they really put a lot of work into the new Falcon processor and the fans. His console runs so hot that I can put my hand over the thing and feel it, this new console I have runs so cool I can't feel heat unless I hold my hand directly in front of the fan. I think they've really worked a lot on this new console and as long as you have it where it can get air from all sides it shouldn't be a problem, but it's pretty random I do believe so who knows?

Unfortunately that doesn't sound too uncommon - I am on my 5th system in 18 months.

Dont let that scare you off getting a 360 though - just make you sure you have store warrenty so you can return it directly to the store you got it from if anything happens.

I have only 3 friends that has had 3 Xbox 360's red light on them. One of them with 2 consoles that have had the issue. All 3 were from owner misuse as I saw it. One had hit sitting on a carpet in his living room. The other 2 had there systems placed in very tight spots in there home theater setups. The Xbox 360 on it's own runs very hot but placing it in these kinds of situations will make the system run much hotter.

Another thing I've noticed (With my Xbox 360) is that it runs much cooler when in the vertical position rather than being horizontal. It can be based on the theory that Heat rises. Having the system placed vertical means there is much less area for the heat to float around in the system. In turn, there is less hot air inside the Xbox 360 console overall. Another thing is as a mentioned before, where the system in placed. Some things, like carpets, wood, glass, etc are very poor heat conductors. A majority of home theaters casings are made from wood or glass. Placing a piece of fiberglass under your console can help with issues of having hot air floating under the console. You can find strips of thin fiberglass material in hardware stores or online.

If anything else, the ghetto cooling of a small house fan next to the console blowing cool air always works. Note though that this can cause your xbox 360 to conduct dust inside of it at a faster rate. So if anyone was to want to use this procedure, the fan should be placed around a foot away. On the right side of the console preferably since the left side has a metal plate under the motherboard. Much less cool air will get in having go around that & the board.

These a just a few ideas that an Xbox 360 owners should consider. I've had mine since launch days with no problems to report. Only some freezes occurred. A few in Project Gotham Racing 3 & many in Oblivion before they put out a patch to fix that issue.

It's not as common as people would lead you to believe, at least on the "3 in 10 months" issue. I know many people who are on their launch or second system, while some are on their 4th or 5th.
Personally, I'm on my 3rd since launch. While I am irritated that the problems happened at all, they were certainly spread out further than a 10 month block. Don't let the RRoD issue stop you from getting a 360. Just get the newest chipset and a warranty, and you'll be glad you did.

8 consoles in 19 months, largely down to the fact that my first one lasted 7 months and I was told overheating was the problem, so I bought an Intercooler.

Big mistake. They sap the power from the console and force more dust into the system, plus they have a tendency to melt themselves to the console.

I was'nt until that happened that I did some research into the intercooler and found everyone had problems with them.

Funny, but he has a point. I do like the 360, but I have suffered 3 RROD's and one broken disc drive. I think that the percentage of failures on the first batch of 360's is likely to end up being more than 90% after 3 years.

It has happened more than 10 times now. I'll be in the middle of a game, then my sound goes. As soon as I restart my 360, it is fine. Anyone else ever have this problem? Makes me angry, cause restarting is the only way to get sound back, and if im in a party and don't want to leave, I have no choice but to go silent :(

I'm thinking of calling them up but I don't want to hear "Hey, your screwed eight days before GTA4 comes out"

It only happens once in a while, so I don't think it's worth calling them yet. But I hope this won't lead to the RROD... Knock on plastic :P

Man that sucks. Haven't heard of anything like that before, but 360s are known to act weirdly. One time, my friends barely tipped over, and it ruined a disc. A week later, his dog tugged on the power cord and it flew off the high table and flew through the air, spinning end over end, smashed hard onto the ground, only for us to find that the disc had 0 scratches on it. Both of them were on, so I am not sure why that happened

:(,

It has happened more than 10 times now. I'll be in the middle of a game, then my sound goes. As soon as I restart my 360, it is fine. Anyone else ever have this problem? Makes me angry, cause restarting is the only way to get sound back, and if im in a party and don't want to leave, I have no choice but to go silent :(

I'm thinking of calling them up but I don't want to hear "Hey, your screwed eight days before GTA4 comes out"

It only happens once in a while, so I don't think it's worth calling them yet. But I hope this won't lead to the RROD... Knock on plastic :P

before you take it to MS, take it to the retailer. so long as you have proof that its not working and a receipt with them for the last 12months, then you can get a straight replacement. Where did you buy it from?

Also go to the sound settings in your thing, if you have it set up for 5.1 surround sound and don't have a 5.1 surround sound system then it will mess up your speakers while its trying to dedicate sounds to the correct places. How loud do you listen to your games? if its very loud then you could, maybe, turn it down a little...

...just a touch

International (direct dial to U.S.): 425-635-7180

Right there on the contact page of xbox.com

I even went through the trouble of making sure I accessed the australian version of the site, so it's correct.

SHW Edit: This is now the Official RRoD Thread. Post all RRoD related content here.

im on the phone to microsoft support right now getting a coffin sent over for my RRoD 360 nd im on hold and guess what theyre playing?

The halo 3 theme....... now thats just cruel microsoft........ at least i would laugh if they played Ring of fire (the original or the super sarcastic gamer parody)

edit: haha and now theyre playing the song that plays in the background of tsavo highway (i think thats the level)

edit: oh my god its another song! i dont know which level but it sounds like th campain level where you disable the towers and then the flood comes....

(there have been a coupple of other songs in between)

i would like to know if anyone else has had this happen? if any of you still play halo3

i dont think so, after the bungie/microsoft split microsoft would hae an army of lawyers and i wouldnt be supprised if they owned the rights to that song now, plus halo is a major microsoft beacon and most importantly M$ wouldnt have to pay royalties if they owned the song and for some reason i can see that really appealing to them......i wonder why....

The rights to all the music from Halo belong to Martin O'Donnel, C. Paul Johnson, and Michael Salvatori (they wrote it/produced it). I doubt Microsoft will have to pay any royalties because they are the publisher of Halo3, the split was after the release of the game and the soundtrack.

kind of a kick in the nuts for that to be playing but its better than O' Fortuna that is blasted down the line in the UK whenever I phone.

Apperently there is a disc on some torrent sites that will let you stress test your xbox. This can probably RROD the thing, so if you are nearing that 3 year warrenty up date. Give it a go maybe you'll get a new xbox out of it.

Here is the article (http://megagames.com/news/html/console/xbox360rrodstresstestdiscleaked.shtml)

Description
A Microsoft internal RROD stress test disc has been leaked and is currently available for download through a p2p network.

It seems that the disc was forgotten inside a repaired Xbox 360 console when it was returned to its owner who decided to rip it and upload it to the whole world. The disc is labeled "Ping 17 Test Media" and it is about 7300 MB in size.

Why would anybody do that to his console is beyond us, but the disc is out there.

I do have a launch console =P. I wont RRoD it on purpose though. It has served me very well & only 2 total freezes all together. Both of which were in Project Gotham Racing 3. Oblivion froze alot on saves but that was a game bug. If the thing does crap out. I will just get an elite & just gut the hell out of this one for the hell of it :).

if you still have one from the 3 year warranty that hasn't crapped out I think it has served well enough. Just start saving for a new one and wait for it to crash.

well if they replace it doesn't it automatically come with a new 3 year warrenty. That way you can spend your money on new games instead of a new system.

So let me get this straight - M$ has a test disk that stresses out 360's, and can cause them to RRoD...which they use to test repaired 360's before sending them back to the customers...

Now I realise that they need to test the refurbed units before sending them out, but surely running this disk would be detrimental to the 360 - I could be halfway to RRoD before it even leaves M$....

I don't think it works that way. You may stress the machine initially, but I'm pretty sure they wouldn't use test media that causes hardware damage. It may cause your box and its processor to hit the panic button, but irreversible damage seems unlikely.

Chances are you need to have a modded 360 to run this, and if you have a modded 360 then you can't send it back to microsoft and get it repaired. There are ways to fix the rrod, but doing this just seems kinda stupid.

it would be pretty pointless to use this, if you do all you do is get rrod sooner. and if you've got a modded 360 you want to stay away from anything that may cause the rrod, which is funny because this disc was requested quite a lot in an xbox modding irc channel

In the UK consumer law means that if you buy something from a store and it is broken when you try and use it for the first time, then you are able to take it straight back to the store where you purchased it.

I am almost certain that the US has a similar law, otherwise this would be happening all the time. Gamestop in this instance would have been liable to exchange the broken one for a new one.

I hadn't played my 360 in the past week because stuff has gotten in the way, but I really wanted to play some GTA 4. So I turned it on and had just started in my apartment when all of a sudden the screen when black. I didn't what was going on, and thought maybe a plug had come out or something. I looked down at my innocent little 360 [Halo 3 edition. I got as a gift], and screamed. 3/4's of the green ring had turned red.
I screamed for about two more minutes, and then turned it off while praying to God and Jesus to not take away my 360 after all we'd gone through. I turned it on again, and it worked fine, but I turned it off after about 5 minutes.
Should I do anything?

2 xbox 360s, 2 red rings of death, 1 very very angry BLACKBIRDD7.
Damn i was almost done with, COD3,assassins creed, PGR 3,Battle stations midway and Gears of war. I was 70% to 90% done with all of those games.
I was happy with my Xbox very very happy. I kept it in a open space, dusted it off every once and a while and played it often. It was in a good home.........
I HATE MICROS$@T.
YARGHHHH.

Sorry about this but im freaking angry....

On the second day of my Xbox 360 arriving I nearly had a heart attack. I switched my baby on and it started making a wierd "Whirrrrrr" noise. Then, it came. 3 red lights after just one day of playing my Xbox... I was pretty p***ed off so I unplugged it and nearly threw it across the room.

Later, I plugged it back in and turned it on and by the luck of the devil it was OK...

True. When I saw that rothbart posted in here I knew what it was going to be about. Still, when people get so loyal to their inanimate objects, its easy to see why the way they act the way they do.

GamerTag Radio forums? People hate me there? A lot of people? Link or it's not true...

Oh and guys... it doesn't take a "fanboy" to mock the 360's red ring of death problem... that's easy. It takes a fanboy to keep acting like it's no big deal or somehow "the cost of gaming" as Xboxes keep failing.

I was in my local gamestop and one of the display xboxs had an RROD but the guy at the counter was unplugging it and boxed it. not in the microsoft RROD coffin but in a Xbox 360 box

then a guy walked in asking abotua 360 for his son and the clerk sold him the one still on the counter that had the RROD!!!!!

The question should be rephrased, to how many times has it been serviced or repaired.

I'm answering "once", but in reality my 360 has died a lot. It red rings, then allows me to play it... then eventually dies again. It's nickname is Rocky, it won't stay down.. and I haven't thrown in the towel (meaning both: not give up on it AND it hasn't needed the towel trick).

I think I'll be sending it in for service finally, it's getting worse.

My DVD Drive broke, had to pay £60 to get it repaired only for it to come back for it not to show me a picture, only give me sound. So two failures, one immediately after the other, means that I've barely played GTAIV or Dark Sector both of which I have only had 2 hours on each since they were both released. The biggest release in gaming history and I miss out. Typical.

Edit: And by the way, I'm still waiting for it to come back for the second time, which means I've been 360-less for nearly a month now... *sadface*

I have never had the RROD (knocks on wood). My first 360 that I got at launch, mysteriously "malfunctioned" when the Elite came out...not sure what happened! But Best Buy had to give me a nice new Elite since I had the Product Replacement Plan. My Elite has never had any issue yet (runs outside and knocks on all trees within a 50 mile radius).

I played it and it was a hilariously choreographed performance of a red ringing Xbox 360 opening and closing its drive tray to various parts of the music. Just to let you know if you didn't know, putting your 360 in a vertical position causes the parts to vibrate more and possibly scratch your game disc, that's why the horazontal position is better.

Says who? Nobody's proven beyond speculation that one orientation is better/safer than the other... the best people have is the lesser fear of knocking over a horizontal 360 and some apparent thermal imaging that doesn't prove your horizontal 360 is any "safer" from RROD than a vertical one.

By your reasoning, virtually all Microsoft marketing materials have the 360 in the least safe orientation. What's that supposed to mean?

unreliable

adjective

2. Not to be depended on: undependable, untrustworthy. See trust/distrust.

I made sure not to touch my 360 on Friday 13. That could have been bad.

You are truly blessed.

I think I have Raptor Jesus in my favor. Probably all of those young children's souls I sacrificed to him.
