On Pg. 30 of the June 2008 isue of GameInformer, they have heard talk of the next consoles coming out in the 2010 to 2012 range of time. Do you think this could be plausible or do you think they are trying to cause some kind of gossip.

P.S.: If you all could help me find more information on the net I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks

Well yea this is kind of retarded everyone knows that the xbox 720, ps4, and whatever horrible name nintendo comes up with next is coming out in that time period. The more intriuging question is what those consoles will include. Damn latley ive been thinking alot about the next-next gen consoles. a few months ago i felt as though this gen was just starting but now i feel as if its drawing to a close. GAMING GENERATIONS ARE TO SHORT!!!

I'm guessing 2010-11 or so, that sound's like an ideal time. PC gaming can also spur a new console generation you know. If game requirment's are higher on PC then the 360/PS3 and the game's are cross platform companies will take notice.

This months EGM states that Microsoft is already working on her next console and may have already sent out dev kits... Crap.

Gaming generations are usually between 5 - 8 years, so 2010 would sound about right.

It does suck that they are so short, but thats the downside of consoles and being unable to upgrade hardware.

In one of Major Nelsons podcasts a couple of years ago, he said that the second the 360 initially shipped, a team was working on the next-next-gen model.

Ir makes sense really - if it takes around 2 years to produce a new game (especially on new hardware) then dev kits would have to be going out around now.

The sad thing is that to make the dev kits, the hardware would have to have been designed around one or two years ago. That means that next-gen hardware is actually around 3/4 years old, by the time it is first shipped.

It does seem to be a trend where the first next-gen out of the door largely dominates that gaming generation. PS1 & 2 did this and 360 is doing it at the moment (nobody counts the wii). Realistically if the PS3 were to overtake 360 and get into a position where they were the clear dominating console, it is going to be 2009...and a year later the next-gen will emerge.

05+12=7 years

Those bastards told me this gen would have a ten year life cycle. Guess Im gonna retire from gaming earlier than I thought.

Sony's will, but I don't know about Microsoft's. You'll notice that there are still PS2 games coming out. Xbox, not so much.

I'm really curious what Sony's going to do for their next generation product. This time around they used an external supplier for the GPU, likely because they couldn't get rendering on the Cell up to the performance level they wanted. Next time, I have to wonder if they'll just put two of the new cell processors in that run nearly twice as fast (http://www.engadget.com/2007/01/04/ibm-and-friends-spice-up-cell-6ghz-and-65nm-right-around-the-co/) as the old ones, and skip having a sophisticated dedicated GPU part completely.

Well each console has a life-span of about 5-6 years before it's son comes up.The 360 was launched in 2005 and 2010-2012 time period is when the nextx2 gen consoles are going to come out.

I reckon MS & Sony will announce that at E3 2009.

Should we save our money for the next consoles or should we continue to spend on our current consoles? It seems as if you spend a grand on a console, then 5 years later you spend tree grand. This is getting ridiculous. At least I have a good gaming PC to keep me going.(Hopefully)

System manufacturers used to assume that the average consumer would only purchase about 3-4 games over the life of the console. By having turnover in hardware, they can restart that cycle.

I don't know what to recommend to you, except that if you already have plunked down the cash for a console, you're already in for this round. May as well enjoy it, I'd say. If you're like me, five years from now you'll end up with a bunch of games you haven't finished anyways, so you can ride out a generation if you have to.

If you do have the money, though, you don't have to get both big-name consoles every generation; you can switch back and forth between manufacturers. That's what I've been doing. Last gen, I got a game cube, this generation I got a PS3. With the PS3's backwards compatibility, I'm playing a whole raft of PSone and PS2 games on the cheap that I never got to play last go round, plus I've got a stash of cube games I can play if I ever run low.. which I won't. It's working out well for me so far.

Sony have said time and time again that they are aiming for the PS3 to have a 10 year lifespan, so don't expect much in the way of PS4 news until at least 2012 or potentially even later than that. I can see MS working on a new Xbox though, as it's been around just that bit longer and the company has never seemed to clearly state some kind of long-term strategy for the console. Of course, the Xbox's lifespan was very shortlived compared to the PS2 (but not, obviously, to the Gamecube ).

The PS2 was quite a phenomenon though - it never really had any strong competition.

If M$ brought out a 720 in 2010, then Sony would have to ship a PS4 - their hardware just wont last by itself for 10 years.

It would be like having just the PS2 and the 360. OK, the PS2 sales figures are massive, but no one really takes it seriously as a market leader because its last gen.

Microsoft had to kill the Xbox because it was hemorrhaging money.

360's not doing as bad so I expect it will have a full life.

As for Microsoft developing the next console it doesn't shock me. Back in 2002 Sony started talking about PS3. All consoles have a 3-4 year development cycle.
