emm no because every bi-console game would just be a console bitching session.

PSN will make XBL look bad

Welllll... the software wouldnt be a problem. The ONLY problem would be getting the corporations to agree! (Pricky Bastards):wink2:

The company's make to much money from there services.

It would get very complicated with the crossing of the consoles and networking and all that blah blah.
Oh and by the way, I live in Oklahoma so I find the poll a bit offensive.

05-23-2008, 09:06 PM
well to be honest i think it would suck because when one platform has exclusive content such as XBL getting COD4 maps how ever many days early they wouldnt be able to play with each other, aswell as that think of the lag and i bet there would be a hefty price!

caruso1268
05-23-2008, 09:09 PM
i doubt that woud be a problem!

Yamster
05-24-2008, 12:55 PM
I can't see this happening purely because the two companies would rather attract players to their consoles rather than enable crosstalking - I know some people who buy consoles based on what their friends have, so they can play over the net with them. A cross-compatible network would mean that this factor would be eliminated and Sony or Microsoft can lose potential customers who would otherwise be swayed one way or the other.

You're kidding, right? Have you ever programed a network that allowed millions of people to play together, regardless of what platform they play on?

I didnt say REGARDLESS OF PLATFORM. I said regardless of 360 or PS3 (cuz i hate wii and it wouldnt work that way). And no, but ask someone with some insight on the subject! (not your Uncle Freddy) And for god's sake stay calm! Plus, with a corporation with almost limitless resources, *hint* Microsoft *hint* almost anything's possible!

I am calm. I'm just asking if you know what it takes to program something that works flawlessly. It's harder than it looks. I'm taking programing classes and I have trouble sometimes, and the stuff I usually end up making isn't that good at all. Also, if you want an experts opinion, ask E or Major Nelson. They'll probably have some insight for you.

It is not easy, at all. Get that out of your head jeez.
Its took XBL 5 years to get to where it is today, thats not including the years before hand it took for it to be developed to only allow a few thousand people.
If I remember rightly it took about a year to make XBL extremely basic, (I joining XBL about a month after it was released to the public) and it was god awful, it was pure lag every match, years to load anything.

God knows how long PSN has been under development, and thats nothing special (yet) at the minute.

So let us just think, it will take years to make a service which would be able to hold that many people & once thats been made every piece of software under that name would have to be re made due to it was designed to work with the other service.

I think it would be great for my PS3 owning friends and me to be able to play games like GTA4 together. Though I know they will never do it because they like to keep the console wars burning but it would be great if they implemented this idea.

The thought of playing against anyone from XBL is a nice thought, but think about the competition, and the fact that there will be none. That would lead to no progression, and we'll have the same PSN/XBL as we did a long time ago. That's right, PS Fanboys, if there were no competition right now, In Game XMB would never come.

OK. I admit it. It would be a big investment. A carefully coordinated tech team could work out all of these lag/connection problems. As for arguments, you wouldnt be able to tell if they were XBL or PSN unless they were a fanboy. In which case, he'l be booted.

You will die. Either by the sword or the sands of time, you will die.
But dont you believe that it's worth the effort. I believe in a free world. It's your choice. You can die fighting for your freedom or you can go down alone, peacefully. But suppose we DO have a chance. Suppose we CAN win. Isnt that worth fighting for? Isnt that worth DYING for?

That was Morpheos from the Matrix.

no... you're right... it'd only be worth taking the time to what you want to the systems you like... anything more would just be a waste of time.

not being a wii fanboy, just pointing out how your biasness completely nullifies your argument.

rothbart

Either way, PSN might be like poison to XBL.

Or the other way around... most people completely misrepresent their opinion of what exactly XBL and PSN are anyway... this discussion is pretty silly without those ground rules set in place.

One man's firmware revision or dashboard update equals another man's PSN/XBL improvement... is it really PSN/XBL that are being improved there?

It is technically possible. Look into Steam for instance, there are probably millions of variations of computers. It would take so much effort though, pointless effort.

This is how business works:
Competition drives business. If you have one united service, there is no drive for the company to spend $'s on new software and you get the same version for the rest of eternity. Its a stupid idea that wasnt really thought out before being posted.

Yamster

If PSN and XBL joined forces, we might have free XBL.

Not with Microsoft's business model.
Or Microsoft in general.

It is technically possible. Look into Steam for instance, there are probably millions of variations of computers. It would take so much effort though, pointless effort.

But these computers all run similar operating systems and operate through Steam; they all connect to servers in the same ways, they're all still technically computers running compatible software. The PSN and Xbox Live are two entirely different networks, operating with different sorts of procedures and measures. It would be possible, but only just.

All Blizzard games run on both Mac and Windows, and most games in general have to be able to play with Win 2000, 2000ME, XP, Vista. You have a bunch of different computers running different OS and different Hardware.

On the grand scheme, getting an Xbox and a PS3 to talk to each other would be like getting two flowers to talk to each other. Getting PC networking to work is like getting every flower/tree/can of Pepsi/Dyson/Pencil case to talk to each other.

I think you missed the more important point in my quote though. The fact that it will never happen has nothing to do with coding. The reason that it will never happen is because neither company would even consider it. Without competition there is no point in business.

From a non-technical standpoint:

Without competition, there is no need to make good games. Just make games that people can play.

Kung Fu Viking

This would be very difficult to implement. XBL and PSN are two completely different systems. To make them communicate would be an extremely large task and very difficult to do. I don't think there's much point in this anyway. If XBL gamers wanna play on the PSN get a PS3. If PSN gamers wanna play on XBL get an Xbox 360. Simple! Expensive, but simple.

But the competition doesn't need to be on the exact same online service, just within the general video gaming marketplace.

PSN and XBL are already competing.

I could see where being able to play against someone on anther system would be nice but as for a full merge I vote no.

DarkDragon9906
06-06-2008, 12:17 PM
For the Multi-platforms, if we could face each other it would be great. I'm guessing but if the company that makes the game (take cod4 for example) runs their own dedicated servers and XBL can somehow connect to it, and the ps3 also connecting, I don't think it would be too hard. Its already being done with the PC and Xbox with their live service.

Before this closes, I'd just like to say that the only way this will ever happen is if either company falls to a level so low that they have to whore out their character to other games. *cough* Sega *cough*

The thing is, both Sony and MS are absolutely huge companies that have businesses that don't involve gaming of any sort to fall back on. As such, neither company will fall that low any time soon, and should either company fall to that level, well I don't think we'll be in an economic situation to care about games at that point.

yeah i really want that to happen because then i could own my mates at COD4 who have a ps3, cus when i play it on ps3, (im probs gonna get a lot of hate for this but its my opinion all u fanboys) the friggn controls suck, i cant stand using r1 for shoot, and u can say oh well u can change it to r2 but its a demented button its not a trigger, so yes i would like the 2 networks to be combined

note: i can beat my friends on the ps3 w/the controller anyway but i want my 360 controller

Bah, it is possible but unlikely. The corporations would never agree to this. Not to mention that you would probably have to have a middle man to support the communication between the systems. That is unless patches were developed to make them communicate in unison, but again that would require the corporations to agree.
