View Full Version : over 3000 members and only a few hundred a day?
The McMurder 05-29-2008, 12:15 AM I just noticed that SG has over 3000 members we should have a set apart day where everyone should visit and post at least once... We'll set a most users in one day record for sure. Of course it'd have to be mentioned on the big show the blue show and the hump show... On second thought let's not shorten that one's name. It may be slightly dumb idea but... Actually I have no excuse O well :-D
I just think people need to be more active. Plus it'd be cool
RAGNAROCK 05-29-2008, 01:15 AM Jordan the Hobo tryed this once but it din't work.but yeah I would be cool if all members loged in the same day.
ShockwaveLover 05-29-2008, 01:25 AM If you go to the members list, and arrange by posts, you'll find that the majority of the posts are made by the members in the first 4 pages. Only about 240 of our 3204 members have more than 100 posts to their name. About 95 have between 99 and 50.
The remaining 92% have less than 50 posts.
viatrophy, by himself, makes up ~2.4% of the total forum postage.
The top 10 users combined, total 19% of the forum posts.
That's insane.
NecrisJ1MM 05-29-2008, 04:02 AM Yup, a majority of new members we get just register and log on to post and rant about one of the articles the SG crew wrote. Maybe troll for a bit, and eventually leave. All this with about 5-10 posts, if that. A couple of people do stick around though. So that's good. It's always good to see some fresh.. uh, users.
viatrophy 05-29-2008, 04:35 AM I'd like to see this happen, even if people logged in occasionally to post, but unfortunately I don't see it happening. :(

Hooray for me.
MeggaMan 05-29-2008, 04:54 AM That would be awesome but most people don't care
Jordan the Hobo tryed this once but it din't work.
It's Jordan what do you expect
Officer Mudkip 05-29-2008, 05:06 AM I'd like to think i'm pretty active

You know the old saying, 'throw enough mud at a wall....'
We're the mud that stuck.

DeathByWaffle 05-29-2008, 06:50 AM I try do be as active as I can but I do know what you mean, it always seems like I see the same people in each thread I post or visit..not that thats a bad thing :D
I'd say those stats are pretty normal for most forum communities. You'll always get a lot of people that "slip through the net" and don't come back, or appear not to be active. A truer reflection of the number of users on the forum would be to track "last visited" dates, I bet there's tonnes of people like myself that regularly read/check the forums but rarely post.
From a long time member, infrequent poster's point of view (details eyes left), I'd say this community is doing just fine, although I don't participate much thats purely down to an available amount of time or rather lack of. One observation I have though is that I kindof think the user generated blog stuff does dilute the quality and quantity of forum activity. Imagine if the topics posted as blog entries were just forum topics. There'd be increased activity centred round the forums and it would also increase the quality of discussions taking place on them.
I personally don't see the point in having WordPress blogging with comments, vBullitin blogs with comments and vBullitin forums. Its all too diluted, I much preferred it when all discussion traffic was directed to one central place - the forums.

it just kinda floated by, and not too many people noticed it....
codinthepocket 05-29-2008, 08:03 AM Well, a lot of members are inactive...
There are probably only 400 or so who are actually active daily...
And up to 1500 members who log on a few times a month...
Ridiculous. Shockwavelover's stats say it all...
Nightkiller93 05-29-2008, 10:25 AM Doc said the site gets around 30,000 views a day but only 3,000 members? Strange.
Blackbirdd7 05-29-2008, 10:35 AM Some of thoses stats are INSANE.
On an different note i want to become part of the SG community. In doing that i have almost got 50 post for the 2 or 3 weeks ive been here. I also got 6 blog post. So maybe im an new face that will stick around. Time will tell.
A Rabid Moose 05-29-2008, 10:44 AM It's a conspiricy. They're keeping the real numbers from us to motivate us to post.
Also, my daily post average is like 2.64 or somthing, so...
I'M HARDCORE!!
kingofnoland 05-29-2008, 10:45 AM It took me a while to really get active as well.
At the start I guess I must have been scared to put an opinion in fear of a backlash, took me ages to reach 100 posts.
Since then I've lost that problem, don't care what everyone thinks now. Guess thats a good thing really
my point is it can take some members a while to get used to posting really, but soon enough they will come.
Tweep 05-29-2008, 10:53 AM It's not that we don't care, some of us just have schedules that can be worked around our hobby on one day and not reliably the next. :( I mean, I haven't even finished Bioshock (gasp!) or the story from GTAIV yet and it's not from a lack of appreciation.
Alot of people just sign up to sites, make a few posts and then forget about it.
Eulogy 33 05-29-2008, 12:58 PM The reason we have so many members vs posters is that you can't lurk without registering. You need to sign up or you can only read about 5 forum pages a day.

o yeah i forgot... still it'd be great if more people were active! I mean how much better would the forums be if there were an extra few hundred instead of the same people all the time. No offense everybody

Schedule is definitely the main reason I haven't been on as much as I would've liked. There's so much content on this site (so time-consuming sometimes!) that I find myself binging on everything here sporadically, usually after a period of inactivity.
For example, I am just recovering from a semi-serious hospital visit (with oral surgery on top of that :( ), so I haven't been able to visit for a while now.
There are 3 other communities I frequent, but my post count is far lower in these forums. It might be because much of my time on this site is spent reading blogs, or it might be because this is one of the smaller communities I visit, or it might just be because the average post-quality level here is much higher than some places I visit.
Who knows. I plan on being here for a long time though - don't let my post count fool you!
Spudnik 05-29-2008, 08:32 PM This is the way most forums work. Thousands sign up but only a select few stay on.
IceKatana X 05-29-2008, 08:42 PM I'd like to say that I'm a poster, I've been trying to get used to the community since I'm quite new here. I guess another cause for more users than posters is that maybe they have their doubts.
Odins Messenger 05-30-2008, 12:05 AM Only a few hundred regular posters and a few of these posters just spam crap topics... Anyways it would be great to see newer regular posters starting to come in so the forum community can at least grow.
Shane86 05-30-2008, 12:19 AM it just kinda floated by, and not too many people noticed it....It just descended into spam, shame that. I stopped posted for a few months, basically because I was sick of all the stupid spam threads that were being made and I couldn't do anything about it.
KeavyRain 05-30-2008, 04:06 PM Hey, you guys don't want this to become G4 forums where it takes a week for a mod to look for a thread to lock it. Still it would be nice if we had more frequenters.
I haven't been to the G4 forums since the TechTV takeover (The TechTV whiners were why I left. I miss TechTV, too but I didn't feel the need to tell everyone about it at length and ruin discussions with my poorly-thought out ramblings) but you'd think a site that big would have a "Moderator Alert" button.
In fact, why doesn't this site have a moderator alert button?

still doesn't hurt to try to get them on one day
PopTrogdor 05-30-2008, 07:25 PM yay im number 14 guys! wheeee
TOA DOOM 05-30-2008, 09:27 PM Yeah...i'm on here pretty much every day, but i don't post very often so i'm pretty sure like no one knows me....but yeah, if it worked it could be cool.
