View Full Version : Have Special Editions Gone Too Far?
Bauer22 06-27-2007, 12:32 AM Now I'm a younger gamer so I'll only talk about the 6th and 7th gens because I didn't have any of the other consoles.(Other that the N64) Now I dont remember many Special Editions for the Playstation 2 or the GameCube when I went to buy a new game. (I did not have the Xbox) Now ok we have the new Next Gen games with there extra "Next Gen Tax" of 10 bucks. Now we have 60 dollars games knowing the 40 dollar games are a thing of the past but the cost gets worst. With the 7th gen there seems to be a raise of Special Editions. Now it seems that every other game has a SE that cost 10 dollars more for what, a extra picture book or a bonus dvd. What's the use! Now ever since Bungie said one of their SE will cost $130 every one else think that if they add some extra discs, a helmet or a duffel bag they can jack up the price! Now maybe its just me on a students budget but is anyone else think they have gone to far with this or are you willing to pay more for extra junk.
Urbandevil 06-27-2007, 01:14 AM I personally would never pay extra for no helmet, bag or any other themed cheap plastic perephenalia.

Well, how about metal perephenalia?
Me = sucker for metal cases.
Locke 06-27-2007, 06:24 PM I simply think it's strange that i'm willing to pay an extra 10-20 dollars for a behind the scenes, 'making of' video when I've been following a game for years and I know what the developers were doing because I was there listening to every little thing they say...
ghoti 06-28-2007, 09:53 AM If it comes with a t-shirt or something that I'm likely to use (like the Half Life 2 LimEd I got) then I'll drop the extra money, but honestly it's not worth it for a "Making Of" DVD that I'll never watch.
I was okay paying extra for Dead Rising's metal box, but despite Gears of War's arguably prettier box, I didn't bother with that because it had a making-of. I kind of regret it, but the box is too big to fit in the storage box I use for my game cases.
CussingZombie 06-28-2007, 10:26 AM I know a guy who has already put money down to get the Halo 3 Uber edition. When he told me how much it cast all I could think was, "They saw you comming a mile away." The worst part about it is that he doesn't have a 360 yet so he's gonna putting down some major cash between now and then. The only way I would drop or even ask for a helmet that would add that much is if could plug it into your console and use it like the helmets in Blue Thunder(Your gun aims at what you look at). Does any one remember that movie?
Captiosus 06-28-2007, 10:59 AM This post is pretty appropriate for the topic at hand. (http://www.destructoid.com/my-grand-theft-auto-iv-special-edition-let-me-show-you-it-33774.phtml)
30 bucks more for a music CD, art booklet, duffel bag and safe deposit box. While that's not a steep price, seriously, what the hell. I buy a game for the game, not so I can get a safe deposit box.

The only way I would drop cash for the Halo special edition Master Chief helmet would be if it was a life-size Nightmare Armor one.
Unfortunately I'm one of the suckers who's paying the extra cash for a helmet. But I've heard it's a nice helmet :-[
Locke 06-28-2007, 05:44 PM I think theres a reason why their giving people helmets for buying the uber halo 3 edition.... ::)
Hehe, ya get it?
Captiosus 06-29-2007, 12:51 AM I want to know the exact size of the Spartan helmet. If it's big enough to fit my cat's head, I'm so buying the legendary edition just to put it on her head and make her go insane.
That's enough entertainment to justify the cost outside of the actual game itself!
Lumpydonut 06-29-2007, 01:22 AM And if it is big enough to fit MY head then I am buying it so that I can be Master Chief like a million other people in the world.

good point.
Can i wear said helmet ? if so its definitely worth the cost. It would look great around the office and definitely scare HR into bumping up the salary. Id have to find a matching tie though...
If not then where do i put the helmet ? Im thinking on the mantle piece next to my mint Condition SNES Super Tennis box and my limited edtion Alex Kid in Miracle World strategy guide. That'd impress the chicks !
Locke 06-29-2007, 06:41 PM I'm pretty sure it's a cat-sized helmet.

No fitting you or your cat.
Lumpydonut 06-30-2007, 01:44 PM I personally don't see anything wrong with special editions. It isn't like they are taking a gun to your head and saying "PAY 10 MORE DOLLARS FOR SPECIAL EDITION!" You do have a choice. As for me I am choosing to pay 130 bucks for one game and some people do call me crazy but it is my money and my choice. I also bought Lost Planet Collector's Edition for $70 and I beat the first lvl and haven't played it at all since. I plan on playing it eventually but still, Beta kinda halted that situation...
Locke 06-30-2007, 07:41 PM No fitting you or your cat.

P.S. Yes I know the picture is doctored.
Cyber_Hunter 06-30-2007, 11:09 PM I don't think buying a game that come with "Limited Edition Display" stuff, stuff you can't use for anything, is worth the extra cash. If it's somthing useful (The cat helmet is a good idea), then i'd be more then willing to pay a little extra for it. I still get the game and a t-shirt or somthing to torment my cat with.
Beowulf 07-01-2007, 12:58 PM Did anyone hear about the special editions of GTA IV? It comes with the standard DVDs and junk but it also comes with a safe (with key) and a......
DUFFEL BAG!!
They just took it too far.
Altered_Weapon 07-03-2007, 01:29 AM I really liked the GoW special edition (and it was the only one available when I bought it.) I guess if people want to pay for it then it's cool.
GrimResistance 07-03-2007, 02:16 AM I can't wait to see how much those helmets are going to sell for on e-bay, that alone might be worth buying it. Also, it looks like from the picture that you can just unscrew the black bottom part of the helmet to make it fit on stuff ;)
CaptainDDL 07-10-2007, 02:14 AM The GTA4 Special Edition thing looks pretty cool.
Lumpydonut 07-10-2007, 10:20 AM The GTA4 Special Edition thing looks pretty cool.
What does it come with? I haven't heard anything about it.

Spudnik 07-16-2007, 02:19 AM the only way the could get me too buy the Halo 3 edition with the spartan helmet was if it fit onto my head. That would kick ass.
CrAzE 07-16-2007, 03:43 AM I'm a sucker for SE...Too bad I don't have the money for it.

I am too.
I always want the best one.
