The thing I love about Halo is, instead of having "YEAH ROCK SHOOTING THIS GAME IS 10/10!!!1!" ads, but having TV ads like this...

Ignorance much?
Shane86 09-15-2007, 12:24 PM Can we confine all halo talk to one thread please.
Duncor 09-15-2007, 12:24 PM Damn it Tiannam, stop forcing Shane86 to look at this thread. Why must you make him click on it. This isn't even the 360 forums and halo isn't the biggest game to come out for the system ever so clearly there is no need for it to be posted here at all.

I wasn't trying to argue with you saying that "Halo is the best game ever". I personally don't care what you think about Halo, like I said in the first post
It doesn't matter if you can't stand Halo, or it's fans. But one thing is true. This is amazing.
I'm referring that the replica battle that they made by hand is truly amazing.
Duncor 09-15-2007, 12:36 PM I was making fun of Shane86 for clicking on the thread and even coming to the 360 forum and not expecting to see Halo 3. It is the biggest game to ever be released on this system and is anticipated by millions. Even if you do think it sucks it is going to be huge so buy a copy or get the hell out of it's way before it runs you over.

Haha, nice one.
Shane86 09-15-2007, 12:44 PM I actually clicked on "new posts" so there :D
Tiannam 09-15-2007, 12:47 PM I was hopeing that we could talk about the topic at hand, but not doing so is fine also.
V3NOM 09-15-2007, 01:53 PM You nailed it right-on, Tiannam: those ads are an amazing change from traditional shooter commercials. Being into the story of Halo myself, this just sheds a new light on the Master Chief and what he means. Instead of just being a complete badass, he's also an inspiration to the rest of the human soldiers as well. Brilliant ads.
CharlieBlix 09-15-2007, 02:09 PM That site is pretty sweet. I love the old time feel and playing on the fact that in a way halo is old to people so by making it that way in the ads it turns something that could be seen as a bad thing into something to be proud of. Pretty smart.
duffydirect 09-15-2007, 09:45 PM I can't wait to hear the podcast discussion on those ads. I have mixed feelings about the ads. On one hand, I read all the Halo books, and I really liked seeing more backstory in the Halo universe (as scanty as the story revelations are -- still better than the usual Bungie ambiguity, though)
On the other hand, I have a problem with the sort of... Pretention of it all. It feels very pretentious. It feels to me like "We don't even have to show you our gameplay, graphics, new features, etc. because WE are ARISTS here at Bungie!"
Does anyone see what I mean? I'm not trying to be a hater, because I love Halo, but I don't know... In the end it's a video game about pasting space invaders -- it's not like Bungie is painting the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel or building the Hagia Sofia or something, you know?
V3NOM 09-15-2007, 10:18 PM On the other hand, I have a problem with the sort of... Pretention of it all. It feels very pretentious. It feels to me like "We don't even have to show you our gameplay, graphics, new features, etc. because WE are ARISTS here at Bungie!"
Bungie's already released trailers that show gameplay and graphics. Pretty much every new feature that's in Halo 3 is already around on the internet everywhere.
Not to mention that the gameplay of the Beta was probably a pretty good way to tell what that of the gold version would be like. Less weapons and maps, but the versions of those maps were all near-final.
I understand where you're coming from, though. It's like Bungie is saying "we don't have to prove ourselves to you to make you like our game." And in a way they don't: they've already shown with Halo 2 that they can make a game that's ridiculously fun and popular even if it ends up horribly imbalanced. I personally think that balance will be way better this time around because the release of Halo 3 isn't rushed, but even for those who beg to differ it's hard to show something like that in a one-minute trailer...
And it appears that they've already proven to 1.5 million people that their game is worth buying anyway.

They could show it's a great game by showing it all "LOOK AT THESE GRAPHICS OMG". Or, they could do it this way which is very unique and different from many other games.

It's not that they don't have to prove anything to anyone, because you're right they don't have to after the success of their previous games. What I'm talking about is the fact that Bungie is memorializing THEIR OWN GAME! It's kind of like Thomas Jefferson designing his own memorial, or bush naming an aircraft carrier after himself (or his dad who has the same name, or whatever) It's one thing to make artwork or whatever for a game and promotional materials, but to build a wax sculpture and a diorama bigger than my apartment to have tour around the nation's museums just seems like vanity.

ooSiRLUDiDoo 09-16-2007, 07:23 PM I just saw this last night and thought it was good, and im just a casual halo fan, it is a nice break from traditional advertising.
Dark Sovereign 09-17-2007, 11:09 PM You know, I think that it would be best to look at these "believe ads" in a slightly different perspective. I really don't think that they are a true advertisement for the game, but more of a revealer for the fiction and some revealing for the campaign. I especially think that the "museum tour" requires closer inspection, as it alludes to some of the enemies you will be facing (hunters and jackal snipers that use more than snipers and pistols), reveals that the chief will be captured during the battle, and shows a few videos that aren't going to come out until, and even after, the release. I found this last find to be the most telling of all. Think about it: Why, if these ads are truly advertising material, would they refuse to show them until the game comes out (2 cases) or until over a week after the game came out (1 case)?
Duncor 09-18-2007, 12:13 AM I really enjoy it because it shows off the darker side of the halo universe that you don't see as much in the game, only the books.
Dark Sovereign 09-18-2007, 12:24 AM I like it because it gives a new perspective on it. You always get to see what the chief sees, but now there showing you what the other marines are going through. In addition, it gives them the chance to drop cryptic hints, which is something they like to do. In addition, is it just me, or is there the feeling that the Chief is dead as of the making of the videos?
Dark Sovereign 09-19-2007, 05:09 PM I think I just realized something. I keep hearing about how Halo 3 is overhyped and won't be able to live up to its promises. The truth is, that is all a lie.
I went back over all of the advertising material I could find, and I went over the IGN material on their impressions of the game, and I had an epiphany. That is: Whoever thought of this add campaign deserves a raise.
I realized that the company wasn't actually putting out the hype, nor were they promising things that they can't deliver. Everything that they said they could bring to the table has been shown to the gaming public in funcitonal form. Their adds aren't very explicit, and are mainly videos of some footage that is associated with the game. And as for all of the Halo-themed products coming out? They wouldn't be coming out if the companies invovled didn't see some money in it.
So where does the hype come from? The gaming public. They had been waiting for Halo 3 ever since Halo 2 was first released. When the first adds for Halo 3 reared their heads, the public was eager to see what was coming. Simply put, the people are seeing what the company puts out, which, despite what some think, isn't put through much of a lens, and they draw their own conclusions about the game. They convince themselves that the game is going to be great, and each and every peice of information they get fuels that belief. In other words, people are saying that the game can't live up to promises it didn't make.
The hype doesn't come from Microsoft. The hype comes from the people waiting for Halo. Once again, whoever came up with such a viral soft sell deserves a raise.
Hotcooler 09-20-2007, 01:18 AM 2 play or not 2 play.... That's the question... Damn... :D

duffydirect 09-22-2007, 08:46 PM *update* so on Joystiq, the newest of the Believe ads premiered today and I just have to say now that the ad campaign is kind of disturbing me. It's kind of like when the Roman Emperor Caligula held a trimuphal procession and games in the city of Rome and declared himself conqueror of the sea after he had his entire army collect seashells from a beach. In other words, completely celebrating/immortalizing something fake. Plato would be braining himself against a marble column if he found out about all this!
Canuck 09-22-2007, 11:57 PM I don't think this is the smartest ad campaign, but who knows, it may be a huge help to Halo.
CharlieBlix 09-23-2007, 02:21 AM Lets be real. Halo 3 didn't need any ads. Hell they could have just shown the logo and given the date and it would have been enough. So in a way I kind of like the fact that they at least made something diff like this. I bet they figured they could do whatever they wanted with the ad money so why not make something the fans would really like.
