I've had two Xbox's for a couple of years, but last September around the 25th, whilst playing Halo 3 one of them broke stating that it could not read discs.
Being a bit lazy and not wishing to deal with MS customer services, I left the broken Xbox under the TV in the living room with an HD DVD player attached so that my missus could watch movies.
Anyways, a friend was over this afternoon, and having made him a cup of tea, I returned to the living room to find him playing COD4 on the broken Xbox. Unbelievable.
Has this ever happened to anyone else and is it a permanent fix or will it likely break in a couple of days again? I won't be putting Halo back into it as that was the game where the error first happened.

Maybe there was just a problem with the Halo disc?

I thought that at first but tried pretty much every disc and none worked.

I dunno, 360's are ticking time bombs, something is always bound to go wrong.

Maybe their was dust or something that blew out of the drive while the fan's were spinning when your wife was watching her movies, or something similar to that idea.

There's always a chance aliens came one night and repaired it. You'd have to ask them, though.

It lasted 1 hour of playing 'scene it' and then died again.
Comedy.
Might actually send it to Microsoft now, even though I will have to pay £60 as the disc drive isn't covered under the "free fix" extended warranty.
just wrap your box with a towel, play a few minutes and wait for the rRod to appear-than send it in and save 60 bucks ;) -at least that trick works over here in europe-

I thought the towel trick was ameans to temporarily fix the rrod not induce it? But hey it it works then do it. One of my 360,s would rrod somedays then be fine the next. I explained this to ms customer service and they said it would be alright to send it to them to be fixed under the three year warranty as I had reported it as a rrod console. So report it as a rrod console and see if they replace the drive as well? You never know your luck.

The RROD can be induced by overheating the console. I accidentally did it once.

It is now on its way to Microsoft. I have paid the 60 pounds. Should be back in a week. The missis will have to deal with an old DVD player for a while.
