darkwonders 06-20-2008, 02:30 AM PMPB what's your PSN name?
darkwonders 06-20-2008, 02:39 AM Frawlz... That first part is to give people a feel for the new mechanics that Kojima put in. Also for those who've never played the game, it's a perfect way to teach them the basics
The commercials can be changed. Just hit any button. There's like 5 channels... and It all has to do the nanomachines. If you look closely, it's resembling a world where everything is controlled. Almost like a Big brother type tv shows.
rothbart 06-20-2008, 02:47 AM PMPB what's your PSN name?
I've already reserved PMPB, PacManPolarBear, PacManPB, PMPolarBear, SG_PMPB, and CrazyAbootPS3. I'm going to extort some money from him... I hear he pays well.
Tinman 06-20-2008, 03:18 AM I've already reserved PMPB, PacManPolarBear, PacManPB, PMPolarBear, SG_PMPB, and CrazyAbootPS3. I'm going to extort some money from him... I hear he pays well.
o_rly? I leik moneys, so can I haz sum moneys?
Sorry, it's really late, and I'm tired.
Good podcast guys, keep it up.
Have Fun on the PS3 Pacman!
Nightkiller93 06-20-2008, 07:22 AM Frawlz-the install screen animation thing with Snake smoking and the notices are classic Kojima humor one sating 'put all rubbish in the bin' also the TV commercials at the start of the game are once again Hideo Kojima humor and as you said explained at some point in the game .
BlueDubs 06-20-2008, 08:41 AM I think the the Ads at the start are supposed to be cheesy, and you really don't get proberly into the game until bout an hour and a half in.
Frawlz 06-20-2008, 09:07 AM Well.... Honestly it wasn't all the cut scenes that really got to me.... It was the fact that you wait 2 years for a game.... And you don't even get to really play it for atleast 20 min after the install.
I wanted my first moments with the game to be "shock and awe". It wasn't even close. That was the main complaint that I had about it.
I am sure there are a lot of people on this forum that will agree with me.
PopTrogdor 06-20-2008, 11:00 AM oh.my.****ing.god
frawlz, thing is, you haven't even played the 2nd or 3rd one, im not surprised that you got bored. I cant believe you died, everything dies with one hit on liquid easy. VR Training shows you how to play the game. I didnt think it was hard to just jump in to it.
ALSO You can change the channel on the tv commercials at the start and each one has an advert for each of the 4 pmc troops.
I dont care that im an MGS fan boy, but like....yeh, frawlz is just being pedantic
Shane86 06-20-2008, 11:08 AM You're not going to like MGS4 as much if you haven't played 2 and 3, plain and simple.
Frawlz 06-20-2008, 12:32 PM Pop... I know you don't care about being a fan boy... but you have to understand that when you pop in a "game of the year"... it should grab your attention right off the bat. This didn't do it for me.
Also, do you think it is fair that I should now have to go back to the other MGs and play them for this one to make sense? Is that good marketing?
Listen, I never said it was a bad game. I know I have not played it as much as I should the first day. I am just saying that it didn't have the pop that I wanted. That is all.
I also belive in cut scenes. In some games they are needed. but do I seriously need a cut scene that shows me walking around a corner... and then have me walk another 10 feet to another cut scene that also shows me walking. I am seriously thinking that the reason they did this is to hide load times. If that is the case, then cool. Better that then seeing "loading". But if that is not the case, then it was a very dumb idea.
If I wanted to watch a movie I would have paid 10 bucks and went to one.
Now, again... don't get me wrong. I think the game is great, and I have yet to put the game down since. But when the podcast was recorded... I was really let down. I guess the opening scene in COD4 really spoiled me.
rothbart 06-20-2008, 12:48 PM You're not going to like MGS4 as much if you haven't played 2 and 3, plain and simple.
I've put about 3 hours into MGS2 and never played MGS3. I love MGS4... imjustsayin'
sayaintjimmy 06-20-2008, 02:45 PM I'm listening now
rothbart 06-20-2008, 02:51 PM I'm listening now
Sadly, I'm sure Frawlz is pantless now. He's also at work, which may make for an interesting story next week.
Shane86 06-20-2008, 02:53 PM I've put about 3 hours into MGS2 and never played MGS3. I love MGS4... imjustsayin'
"As much" If you haven't got a clue who Vamp, Eva, Raiden, Big Boss etc. are, you're just not going to get as much from the game.
Also you said you're only in Act 2, From then on it starts to get very nostalgic, especially act 4. Even all the bosses are based on those from the first ps game.
rothbart 06-20-2008, 02:55 PM "As much" If you haven't got a clue who Vamp, Eva, Raiden, Big Boss etc. are, you're just not going to get as much from the game.
I was pointing out that "not going to get as much" doesn't necessarily imply your socks won't still be knocked off.
Shane86 06-20-2008, 02:56 PM Give me a chance to edit
But it's moments like the Raiden fight scenes, when you see how much he's come from being the girly wimp in mgs2 that made this game for me.
BlueDubs 06-20-2008, 03:00 PM I love the way the flashback sound bites from MGS1 are implanted in Act 4, bringing back memories from nearly 10 years ago.
EDIT- sorry, I did'nt think that was a spolier since GT.com and IGN reveal it in their reviews
Yamster 06-20-2008, 03:04 PM You play MGS4 in the knowledge that there are cutscenes, and you set out to enjoy them. At least, thats what I think anyway. You just accept that it's a narrative-heavy game and go with it. And for those of you saying that you wont understand MGS4 if you haven't played 2 and 3, why do you think Konami have released the MGS4 Database on the PlayStation Store? Albeit not in the UK?
Great podcast though, guys.
darkwonders 06-20-2008, 03:33 PM Give me a chance to edit

Yeah well I remember watching X-play once and them showing the naked raiden part of the game. I'm sure that's all I need to know about him...
I played the third one, so I knew who everyone was. The database gives me a nice fill-in of all the stuff I missed...
It seems like all the games bosses have similar elements...
For the third one you have
The End- He's a sniper just like crying wolf
the Fear- he uses camouflage just like laughing octopus did
The Fury- likes to use explosive type weaponry just like Raging Raven
The Pain- err... well can't think of one to fit here as there were only 4 B&B's and 5 bosses here
The Sorrow- uses psychic powers just like Screaming Mantis
Heck the names are similar.
Sorrow- Crying
Fury- Rage
Fear- Screaming
Err... laughing one doesn't really have a connection to the third game in names...

I think you're confused, They're directly based on characters from MSG1. Decoy Octopus, Sniper Wolf, Vulcan Raven, Psycho Mantis.
rothbart 06-20-2008, 03:51 PM Guys, no spoilers at all (unless they're in spoiler tags) in this thread please...
Frawlz 06-20-2008, 04:23 PM yeah...seriously... cause I am still stuck in an hour long cut scene!
darkwonders 06-20-2008, 04:45 PM I think you're confused, They're directly based on characters from MSG1. Decoy Octopus, Sniper Wolf, Vulcan Raven, Psycho Mantis.
oh I know that... I'm just saying that all the bosses share some elements.
It's obvious because Screaming Mantis is actually being controlled by Psycho mantis. I'm just thinking that Kojima set up the Bosses in MGS3 to be the basis that the other bosses were built on. Since it takes place before MGS1, it would make sense that elements from the bosses during the cold war would be applied to the bosses that Solid Snake fights against.
What were the bosses for MGS2?
PopTrogdor 06-20-2008, 04:48 PM Pop... I know you don't care about being a fan boy... but you have to understand that when you pop in a "game of the year"... it should grab your attention right off the bat. This didn't do it for me.

But thats like saying you shouldn't have to play the first game in a series to play the fourth installment.... so its not that its a bad marketing strategy, its the next installment in a now very long running series.
I feel sorry for you that this didnt grab you straight away. GTA4 did the same thing to me, really /yawn at the start but got better a coupld of hours in. MGS4 personally did grab me the second the install screen came up. Being used to all the other boring nothing happening install screens, you can see how amazing this one is really.
And again, if you are an on running fan of the series, the cut-scenes wouldnt really get to you as its something that has been going on for the last installments.

What were the bosses for MGS2? Oh they were all weird, a fat guy on roller skates that plants bombs and some chick that had a bullet shield and the same rail gun that is in mgs4, you fight solidus and vamp too

Heh. I looked forward to the cut scenes in MGS4. If you go into any MGS game and don't expect lengthy cutscenes... then you're just fooling yourself. That's one of the best parts of the series. It's essentially a movie and a game.
Heck, I liked the cutscenes so much that even though I saw most of the beginning ones at the midnite release (they let us put in a copy at 11 and we pretty much watched someone play till midnight), I still sat through the same cut scenes again at home.
Frawlz 06-20-2008, 05:00 PM But why have a cut scene of someone walking... and then you walk another ten steps to see a movie of him walking yet again.
I have no problem with cut scenes. I enjoy them too. But what is with the meaningless ones?
rothbart 06-20-2008, 05:00 PM I halfway with the "Kojima making a movie" rumors are true (unless it slows him down from making more games). The choreography and cinematography of some of the stuff I've seen in the game so far is pretty awesome.
rothbart 06-20-2008, 05:02 PM But why have a cut scene of someone walking... and then you walk another ten steps to see a movie of him walking yet again.
You keep saying that, but I don't remember it so blatantly bad as you're descibing... maybe you just happened to hit a timing-based cutscene and then immediately triggered a location-based cutscene very closely together, I'm not sure.
sayaintjimmy 06-20-2008, 05:15 PM Pac-Man Polarbear already said that Little big planet was GOTY in episode 4 :undecided:.

If LBP got delayed until 2009, he could still be correct... imjustsayin'
Frawlz 06-20-2008, 08:02 PM I really think that it is way to early to be calling anything "Game of the Year".
Remember we still have some heavy hitters that are coming down the pipe...
Too Human
Gears of War 2
Call of Duty 5
and so on...
Plus we have to remember that GTA and all the other games that already come out will up for that title.
So, don't let all this hype around one game blind you from remembering all the other games.
PopTrogdor 06-20-2008, 08:20 PM ok too human wont beat GTA4 let alone MGS4
Gears of War 2, who knows, doubt it will be game of the year material
Not excited about CoD5, CoD4 didnt do that much for me in terms of re-playability so yeh, not expecting much from that.
The only other real contender should be GTA4 really in my opinion

What choo talkin' about Willis? Too Human?!?!
Kiljoy 06-21-2008, 01:24 AM and one of the bosses for MGS2 (but got cut out) was a crazy old nazi sniper, he ended up being turned into The End for MGS3.
LatinLegacy 06-21-2008, 07:19 AM I will have to side with Frawlz about the cutscenes. It is a very rare occasion where a game such as MGS4 has this many cut scenes that doesn't lead to gaming journalist around the world scolding the developers for it. Regardless if cut scenes are bad or good, I have seen countless games get a ripping for having lengthy cut scenes in there games. Especially RPG's. I'm sure even Kojima knew this & that is why the length of the cutscenes were not allowed to be discussed or mentioned if journalist wanted a fianl build of the game for previews/reviews. Something EGM exposed earlier. There is no doubt that Kojima is a great story teller but there is no excuse why atleast half of the cutscnes in the game couldn't be turned into actual gameplay segments so the player could interact within the storytelling. It could of enriched the gameplay even further as well as giving the player much more game play time.
In terms of GOTY, let's be honest, it's MGS4. It's one of the most anticipated games for the Playstation 3. It's the game that will make most gamers who don't already own a PS3 want to own one. It's definitly in the running but I still see GTA IV beating it out. Especially with it being a multiplatform title that sold very well on both. I wouldn't count out Gears of War 2 out either. It may not have as large of a following as the Metal Gear franchise does but it was a huge success for it being an original IP at its time. There are many gamers looking forward to the sequel & the FPS gen is huge atm. It may surprise people if some publications give it GOTY. LBP is the main title that could ruin any chance Metal Gear has of achieving. An original IP that has a huge amount of hype around it. It's going to do very well if it's released in 08.
I'll thank Frawlz for the shoutout. I appreciate it & even though it was only us two, we had a good time. Don't worry, the request " The Truth " email will be on its way shortly =P.

PacManPolarBear 06-21-2008, 12:43 PM I only said MGS 4 was GOTY "so far." I still really believe LBP is gonna be huge and will most likely be my GOTY.

Its a shame alot of high profile games get a easy pass on reviews. Especially Nintendo's games. Gaming journalism is really bad nowadays =/

People seem to forget about Bioshock. Personally, I think if the rumors are true about the PS3 version of bioshock, I can easily see that game being the GOTY for PS3. LBP, Socom, MGS 4, and Resistance 2 dont stand a chance imo.

Never. Gonna. Happen. ;)
Ozonez 06-25-2008, 07:22 PM PS3 Bioshock won't be GOTY too many people have seen that game or played it. LBP, MGS4 and Resistance 2 are the biggest ones for PS3 GOTY. Im 99% sure for myself that LBP will be GOTY it has WAY too much going for it not to be.
