View Full Version : Better Gaming Begins with You!

Recently, I was in a Circuit City with a buddy. He’s much more of a casual gamer who only plays Madden and maybe one or two other titles. He owns a Wii, but the only reason he even has a Wii is because he got it as a gift. Anyway, passing by a games rack, he stops, picks up Transformers, and looks and me. He loved the movie, we both did, but he knows I know more about this stuff. My immediate response was “Put … That... Back” He looked and responded with “But, it’s Transformers!” … and so began my idea for this rant.

If you’re reading this, there’s an excellent chance you’re either a hardcore gamer, or at very least you have a hardcore mentality, i.e., you know much more about the gaming industry than the average consumer. Upon my soapbox here at Sarcastic Gamer, I feel it is my duty to organize the hardcore gamers to educate our casual, and otherwise completely CLUELESS friends, co-workers, family members, etc., on what is worth their hard earned cash.

It’s people like my uninformed friend who only perpetuate terrible games! Maybe if more people did a little research, or at least, consulted one of us, the hardcore crew, sacred gaming time would be mercilessly spared from the cornucopia of crap that’s constantly created!

Now, I don’t expect this to happen overnight. Think of this rant with a sort of “pay it forward” approach. If you even get one parent or friend to look at your favorite gaming review site before they spend $60 on Vampire Rain for example, we’ve taken one step closer to our goal; The creation, marketing, and selling of better games. I’d bet the average mom doesn’t even KNOW game review sites exist! If she new, that mom could then tell her group of girlfriends, and so on. It’s movements like this that can evolve into a tidal wave of change! We just need to make the first step!

So where do you begin? It’s simple – scope out the people you know who are either casual gamers, or have kids who play games. The child’s age is unimportant since no youngster should be brainwashed into thinking crap is good. Inform these people of your wealth of gaming knowledge, and that you’d be more than happy to assist them, before their next purchase. In the case of a parent, it’s a win – win – win situation. They’ll be happy they’re spending money on something their kids will actually play more than 30minutes, the kid will enjoy a good game, and you’ll be happy you diverted them from picking up a copy of Tenchu Z because “the box looked cool.”

Unfortunately, this is only the first part of this theoretical gaming revolution. The second step is much harder. I’m referring to steering casual gamers away from franchise titles, or more specifically games based on movies and TV. This will be an uphill fight, especially if the aforementioned movie or show is extremely popular. We of the hardcore crew know that for the most part, all movie games are garbage. Teaching this to your casual gaming friends should be easy, however, how do you convince a mom not to buy Pirates of the Caribbean when her kid is screaming for the game? I know one parent who bought her little boy just about every movie game that came out on the Gamecube. Looking at the stack of wasted gaming money made me want to cry as I know he never played any of them for more than a week. My best suggestion would be to tell said parent that if their kid REALLY wanted say, Shrek The Third … rent it first. If the kid really likes it, well then, there’s nothing you can do.

In any case, I take this opportunity to call on all hardcore gamers! DO YOUR PART! Take a stand! Say “DROP that copy of Pimp My Ride!” If we all work together, we could make this gaming world a better place. At least until Spiderman 4 the videogame comes out.

Nice idea

The Transformers game does look cool.

I bet the upcoming Simpson's game will sell like hot cakes even if it gets a rating of 5/10.

I think we should have to wear an "HG" badge and teach them that if they need help, ask an "HG" member.

Yeah - or maybe like a police badge - and we get to whip it out when we see someone about to make a big mistake!

Nice article Supa. The proliferation of crappy games is getting worse.
On the flip side though, Bioshock is one of the best games this year, and to some EVER. However, how many have only rented the game rather than buy it because it can be beaten quickly?
I hope the industry is taking into account rental services like Gamefly when they are tracking sales of a game these days, but they probably are not.

If we lived in a perfect world, then there would be a computer with access to Metacritic, IGN, and Gamespot review scores and articles sitting right next to the game section. That way people could look up the scores while standing right there in the store. I know this will never happen because the people who sell videogames don't care if they sell crap games or not as long as they're selling them.

This is what pisses me off. My best friend who works at GameFlop was told by his supervisor to not talk badly about a game no matter what. If somebody asks him about a game that he's played and didn't like, he isn't allowed to say so. He was told to just say, "I dunno, I haven't had a chance to play it yet." He's not even allowed to recite scores that he's seen on the internet if they're bad. I was in there a couple weeks ago while he was working and several people had come in to buy Lair and most of them asked him what he had heard or thought about it and we both knew what an awful game it is from trying it out, but because GameStop is so money hungry he wasn't allowed to tell them that. So what happens? They end up paying $60 for a shit game that Sony has been hyping to them that could have easily been avoided. Even I had to bite my tongue and roll my eyes because I didn't want to say something to the customer and get my friend in trouble.

Seriously, screw GameStop.

Sadly I have tried many times before to stop friends who actually have internet access and appear to be devoted gamers buy terrible games. I've countless times went out of my way to stop the purchase of games such as Phantasy Star Universe and Shadowrun.

After spending over hundreds of dollars on terrible games they buy due to the look and trading them back in after one week to receive a measely twenty or thirty credits at Gamestop. My friends now realize and come to me before buying anymore 360 titles.

il have to admit...il buy regardless. Sometimes its just nice to have a game to stick in and play casually no matter how crap a la TMNT (which was VERY frustrating and nearly put me off gaming for life - but alas i digress).

Nice idea and article, il try do my bit without getting "GEEK!" shouted at me from a "friend" lol :P

Was out on the weekend with a friend of mine who was wanting to pick up a couple of games, so we entered the local games shop, where he went straight for Transformers and Shadow Run, i didn't know if i should just slap him there and then, however after a few choice words, he ended up buying rainbow six (couldn't believe he didn't already have it) and a years subscription to live.

Totally agree with the "Hey im i Hardcore Gamer, and im happy to save you" kinda idea.

All we need now is someone in Chad. I don't think we've ever had a member here from Chad.

The search begins for a Chadian (sp?) gamer.
