View Full Version : Nvadia's New Graphics Line? applstew 07-18-2008, 12:17 AM As a quick post for opinions and comments how many people have seen Nvadia's new GTX 260 and GTX280 DaDillsta 07-18-2008, 02:43 AM Looks really nice but overpriced and maybe a little too much. n00bhunter 07-18-2008, 04:14 AM More than likely someone have a go at you for this but I'll just tell you nicely Nvidia It's spelt. Anyways back on topic These cards look INSANE!!!! Sure they might cost a truckload but from what i have read these cards are worth the money. ShockwaveLover 07-18-2008, 05:08 AM The ATI 4870 is nearly as good as the 260, but at half the the price. 2 of those, and you've beaten a 280 for the same price. Apathy 07-18-2008, 05:39 AM the 4870 actually beats the 260 in most cases, and is only slightly under the 280 and HALF THE PRICE! my money is on ati this round ShockwaveLover 07-18-2008, 06:30 AM The tomshardware.com tests show the 4870 has a lot of potential, however it urgently needs driver updates. Apathy 07-18-2008, 08:09 AM ati are really good with driver updates, they usually release new drivers every month or 2. LatinLegacy 07-18-2008, 01:43 PM The Nvidia GTX 260 & GTX 280 are great cards. Nvidia became to confident & relied on a larger 55NM process & pushing the limits of GDDR3 memory & it bit them in the ass. The ATI cards mostly benefit from the smaller process & GDDR5 memory. It should of been the route Nvidia should of taken & they wouldn't be having these problems. They will have a refresh coming out soon where that batch will drop from 55 NM to 45 NM. It's still up in the air if they'll stick with GDDR3 for the refresh. It is already rumored that Nvidia has started development on a completely new architecture. This is nothing new as every time Nvidia felt threatened, this is what they did to get back on top. The Geforce 256, & G60 ( 6xxx series) are examples of this. No one has any idea what these cards will be but we will most likely not see them until late mid to late 2009. For now though, the 4870 is the best bang for the buck but if you have plenty of money, the GTX 280 is still the top performer. -LatinLegacy zbiggie 07-18-2008, 01:43 PM hah, its not that good considering that ati/amd is about to release the 4870 x2 which when released will be cheaper then the 280 and faster. Not only that but it forced nvidia to drop the price of the 280 buy 150$ a month after release. Go ATI. (funny as it is I am a ATI fanboy but I haven't owned a ATI card before, This will be a first in DEC) LatinLegacy 07-18-2008, 01:49 PM Ah trust me, nvidia is up to something or this wouldn't have happened =). The ATI, as usual, won't last for very long. http://www.digitimes.com/news/a20080715PD205.html -LatinLegacy zbiggie 07-18-2008, 02:01 PM I'm going to say this gen of cards will be won outright by ATI. Nvidia is already 300 mil behind on what it earned last year, so now its going to be a catch up game. Next gen cards is going to be a full out battle. While NVidia is going to be looking to make up for lost ground. ATI is going to be look to keep its crown. So that will be interesting LatinLegacy 07-18-2008, 02:12 PM It will be very interesting but I'll have to go with Nvidia down the road. ATI always gets one good round in there every few years but they can never hold it. I wouldn't be surprised in 2009 if the situation goes back to the norm. I really want to see Nvidias new card now since the SLI on X58 announcement could most certainly line up with a launch window for there newer architecture. It is obvious that I lean much more towards Nvidia. Besides my R360 9800 Pro, I never touched an ATI card lol. I have a 9800 GX 2 atm but I still refuse to get the 4870 or 4870X2. My next full ig build will be in January 2009 & I'll most likely still be favoring Nvidia. Unless the ATI options are at least 20% better. As that was the case for the ATI 9xxx series. -LatinLegacy Diortem 07-18-2008, 02:30 PM Right now, I see no good reason to abandon Nvidia. Course Im also not looking for a new card until at least a few years (running a 8600 right now), so.... n00bhunter 07-18-2008, 07:36 PM The tomshardware.com tests show the 4870 has a lot of potential, however it urgently needs driver updates. Wow That's awesome looks like It's ATI next upgrade but then i'd have to get a different motherboard and I :heart:My Striker 2 forumla:heart: So maybe not. Also Diortem the 8600GT is still a very good card. Keep it until you can't meet the Minimum System Reqs for lots of games. E.G. at the moment most games only require a 6600 GT or higher. When most games require an 8600GT or higher then that is the right time i upgrade. DaDillsta 07-18-2008, 11:34 PM I'm planning on building my PC with an 8800GT in it until I need more power then I'll just pop another one in. :D Vertrucio 07-19-2008, 01:50 AM On the other hand, ATI is getting money off the 360 since they created its GPU. Part of the reason why the 360 has the unified memory architecture and higher fill rate is ATI. Looks like they've used that money to enhance their mid range-lineup. DaDillsta 07-19-2008, 02:22 AM Not only do they have the GPU in the 360. They have the GPU for the Wii as well. Don't forget that sells like crack. ShockwaveLover 07-19-2008, 04:56 AM I'm going with the 4870, at least until Nvidia decides to release 'the next big thing' at a reasonable price in Australia... Typhoon 07-19-2008, 06:00 AM 9600 gt best 180 i spent on a graphics card applstew 08-12-2008, 10:02 PM Wow Never imagined this many people would post Cool applstew 08-12-2008, 10:05 PM O but come on the hole point here is to have a Graphics card/rest of system that can run a game on what people would considered maxed out graphics slik1000 08-13-2008, 04:12 AM O but come on the hole point here is to have a Graphics card/rest of system that can run a game on what people would considered maxed out graphics The low-end cards do fairly well, when compared to the high end cards, now. There was a day when it was really worth it to buy the top-of-the-line card, but unless you have a monitor that is comfortable running at redicuous res, there isnt as much point anymore. Its still nice to have a top card, but not always needed anymore. firebox 08-13-2008, 09:34 AM If it was a choice between Sapphire HD4870 512 MB GDDR5 2xDVI and ASUS 896MB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260 PCI-E 2.0, which would you go for. Bear in mind that the place that am looking to purchase from sells the GTX 260 at only £12 more than the 4870. Also, is 64bit Vista for computers with 4GB RAM or more? Is there any differece between this and the 32bit version ShockwaveLover 08-14-2008, 07:55 PM If it was a choice between Sapphire HD4870 512 MB GDDR5 2xDVI and ASUS 896MB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260 PCI-E 2.0, which would you go for. Is there any differece between this and the 32bit version A) The 4870 outperforms the 260 in nearly every way. B) The primary differences I'll leave to Slik1000, but essentially yes, if you want to use more than 3GB of RAM, then you must have a 64-bit OS. Typhoon 08-18-2008, 05:42 AM my money is saying nvidia is going to pull there finger out and release the next series to rival ATI simply because ati . well amd hasn't been producing anything exciting Kage 08-18-2008, 05:57 PM This new naming system is supposed to make things easier, but it just seems more confusing to me. Why start with the number 2 instead of 1? ShockwaveLover 08-20-2008, 12:54 AM This new naming system is supposed to make things easier, but it just seems more confusing to me. Why start with the number 2 instead of 1? It is beyond the comprehension of us mere mortals... Typhoon 08-20-2008, 06:57 AM i havnt seen it yet what is it lol ... hmm to upgrade to duel sli when the new searies comes or xfire amd cards |
