Halo 3 reviewers, start your engines! (and rip up those non-disclosure agreements!) At 12:01 pm on Sunday, the Halo 3 reviews went up, and the tidal wave of reviews washed over the internet like a Russian virus. There were so many reviews and coverage of the reviews and coverage of the coverage of the reviews that even OJ was embarrassed by Halo 3 media crush.
What's the verdict?
They like it like a fat kid loves cake (http://www.sarcasticgamer.com/2007/08/quakecon-quest-for-free-stuff_07.html). Like Britney loves Haagen Dazs. Based on 16 reviews, the metascore on Metacritic.com is 97. The metascore of 97, for those keeping track, is exactly one better than Bioshock, the previous critical darling of 2007.
What do the reviewers like? The multiplayer and the story. What, if any, criticisms are there? Some knock it for the marine allies' A.I. and a "somewhat lackluster conclusion," as described by GameDaily. Oh yeah and the reviewers love the level editor called "the Forge." For pure entertainment's sake, I recommend starting at the lowest scored review and working your way up. the lowest scored review reads like a vampire rain review (http://www.sarcasticgamer.com/2007/08/bad-game-shadowrun-song.html), but still scores the game with an 8.8 out of 10. This will ground you and prepare you for the absolute love letters written by the reviewers that scored the game a perfect 10 out of 1o, I'm looking at you 1up.com, IGN didn't even give it as high of a review as you guys did. Get a room!
What's the bottom line?
Should you buy it? Heck, you're probably reading this while in line to buy it, so why do you care what I say anyway.

Ala Douche 09-24-2007, 10:10 AM i'm shocked! (sarcasm) of course it got through the roof reviews... anyone who wouldn't give halo a perfect or near perfect store would get fired, so they were kind of obligated to... hahaha i hate halo hype... sure it'll probably be a good game, but it's just another console FPS... big deal.
Yousty 09-24-2007, 10:22 AM I've had a chance to play through the first three levels of the game and I have to say that it is probably getting over-rated a bit. Personally, I think that IGN had the most spot-on review so far, because a 9.5/10 is probably what I would give it at the moment.
Here's a quick list of my thoughts on it thus far:
-The graphics look damn good, but not quite as good as BioShock's. The lighting effects are absolutely breathtaking though. Seriously, when you're playing the first level in the jungle, take a moment and look up at the sun through the trees. The light filtering through the branches and leaves of the trees is probably the best looking thing I've ever seen in a video game.
-The AI is extremely entertaining and fun to play against. Trying to hurry up and take down a huge grunt while he charges at you with that huge hammer is by far one of the most exhilarating gaming experiences.
-The levels are extremely linear. It's really hard to not know where you're supposed to go and even if you do get lost it pops up that blue arrow telling you where to go and how far. It was pretty much like this in the first two games, so it's not really that big of a surprise.
-The banter between allies and enemies is hilarious as always. Steal a kill and expect to hear it from one of your allies. Walk into a room full of the the little pointy covenant and expect shrieks of, "Oh God, It's him!" followed by them scattering behind objects out of fear.
-The weapons are a lot more balanced than Halo 2. I've had a chance to use almost all of the weapons and they all have their strengths and weaknesses. Detaching the rail gun from the turret for the first time and then walking around with it in 3rd person view is one of the most bad-assedest feelings ever.
-Some of the reviews say that the vehicles are what make this game so much fun and I'd have to agree. I've only played one level with Warthogs in them but sitting there in the turret seat mowing down covenant as the computer AI drives you around is just plain awesome.
-The biggest complaints for me so far would have to be that the game is going to be extremely short. I've played through three levels and they've each taken about an hour to complete, and that's with me taking my time and exploring everything. I think there are only 9 levels total in the game so that means the game is going to take about 10 hours to complete which is just plain sad.
I haven't had time to test out the online multi player or co-op so I can't comment on that yet.
That's my first impressions. Maybe I'll post a couple more things after I get off work and play through a couple more levels.
BigAndiD 09-24-2007, 10:41 AM enjoy guys, it don't come out here for a couple more days, unless you can find some dodgy shop assistant to give you it early.

Gears of War's campaign was about 3 hours long to complete, so Im not complaining. Then the replayability for the campaign is gonna be tremendous with 4 player online co-op.

How did you manage the GoW campaign in 3 hours?
And sure games are more fun in co-op but the Halo3 campaign is not build around the concept of co-op play. It's not as rewarding as the coop in GoW since the whole leveldesign is more suited for 1 man shows. Vehicles in co-op are fun though.

GoW was an awesome co-op experience because every level had you splitting up and taking different routes and then meeting up again. They took time and designed the game to be fun as a co-op experience. Halo 3, on the other hand, is meant to be a 1 player experience so throwing in 4 player co-op isn't going to be as great as everyone is expecting.
I can definitely say for the first two levels of the game, co-op play would be pretty much worthless. The levels are extremely linear and very enclosed so I think it would be very boring and way too easy when you have 4 human players playing it at a time. The third level however is a little more open and you have access to a plethora of warthogs so that level would be a lot of fun with 4 people.
I also would like to know how you beat GoW in 3 hours. Even on co-op this would be really hard to do unless you don't kill anything and just run through the levels.

I actually beat it in 2 hrs on casual. Me and my friend decided to see how fast we could beat the game, so we went through on casual and killed everything and moved forward as fast as we could, and ended up beating it within 2 hrs. I originally said 3 hrs because I thought it was an average play through in casual campaign. Oh, and yousty. Its not possible to skip enemys. You have to kill them all in order to get to the next part.

that story of yours is pretty unbelieveable. I'll leave it up to the forum guys. Is 2 hours possible?
Legendtaker117 09-24-2007, 04:28 PM well Im gonna stand buy what I said, I have beaten the game in 2hrs.
Yousty 09-24-2007, 10:12 PM I dunno. 3 hours seems maybe possible if you're on the easiest setting and playing co-op and purposely trying to just speed run through the game, but still that just seems like a waste of time. I don't believe the 2 hours though. That seems impossible.
Legendtaker117 09-24-2007, 10:23 PM well, believe what you want. I know I did it and my friend knows I did it. So It really doesnt matter.
Canuck 09-25-2007, 12:05 AM The first time for me (I started on Hardcore) it took me 3 to finish Act 1... lol. It was my first try and I was by myself, but still.
keith22 09-25-2007, 01:55 AM hype hype hype it realy helped to get the attention however the game seems to be good however not the best game ever created pls don't want to here any idiot shouting it cause there are a ton of more great games far beter on both single player campain and multiplayer level which regards to multiplatform inc pc.

I'm not going to say he's lying. I have seen a speedrun of ultima 7 in a few minutes. I don't think I would handle a 2h speedrun through GoW.
But regardless of being able to run through a game in record time I would never judge a game on the time you are able to run trough when you do a speedrun.
So for me his initial statement is irrelevant. It may be possible to beat GoW in 2 hours but it's nowhere near the normal time you need to play. Who knows how fast you can run through Halo3 in coop ;)
I think you need to make a vid and prove it :p
V3NOM 09-26-2007, 12:56 AM I beat the game on Legendary already. Now I've got to wake up for school in 4 hours (after I go to bed) and I'm gonna be tired as hell. -.-

This was when Gears first came out and I played it for months, now Im not as good since I havent played in forever. Also I would need to find another partner as good as he was, (I dont think he plays Gears anymore). And I dont have anything to record it on.
