I have a problem. It isn’t medical, or sexual in nature, though having an extra arm growing from my groin would help with those brutal “Guitar Hero” solos. However, it does have a serious impact on my favorite hobby.

Continue on to find out which gaming habit gives me pause for concern.

That is it. I need a break from “Soul Calibur IV.” The game has ruled my life for the past week and a half. Almost all of my free time has been devoted to Project Soul’s newest brawler.

I still have a blast with the game, but I do feel that a brief respite is sorely needed.

Gaming is my main hobby. When not working or honing my writing skills, I am usually thinking about or playing videogames. So, during my recent break, I decided to do a bit of the former.

Upon re-examining a few of my more prevalent gaming habits, I have decided to single out one that I find particularly worrisome. It is not because the action is illegal or immoral, but because it somewhat hinders my enjoyment of certain titles.

Feel free to refer to me as an “unlockables” whore. I have accepted the cold, hard truth. I only hope you will not think less of me for it.

Whenever I get a game, I always have to unlock everything before I do anything else. The aforementioned “Soul Calibur IV” provides an excellent example. The game is jam-packed with secret stuff. No doubt, unlocking every character, weapon and costume is a hearty task for any seasoned gamer.

In my effort to unlock everything from the bi-pedal Lizardman to the Voodoo Armlets, I have regrettably ignored the title’s greatest features.

I have yet to create my own character.

The amount of time I have spent online is negligible.

Most of my efforts have been devoted to earning gold through Story mode and The Tower of Lost Souls (currently stuck on floor 53).

Though both modes are complete rubbish compared to Mission Battle and Edge Master modes, they have been my main focus for more than 30 hours of play. I have forsaken the purpose of the game (to get better) for some virtual money used to purchase articles of clothing. I need help in the worst way.

My lust for virtual wealth has seriously impacted my ability to improve my current skill set. Instead of mastering the techniques of my favorite characters, I simply use the best technique (i.e. throws and spamming a few combos) to ascend to the upper floors of The Tower of Lost Souls. Why do I need to learn how to use combos when grabbing the computer is so much easier?

As a result, I have become over reliant on a handful of moves.

This has obvious implications for online play. My record (2-5) is nothing to boast about. Though not obsessed with my win-loss count, it is frustrating to be outclassed by the majority of gamers online. Sure, there are some technical issues (read: lag), but I will readily admit that my skills are simply far below most people that play online. I still have fun, but it is disheartening when another individual pulls off a massive combo that leaves my character hanging on by a thread.

Pray for me sweet reader. My shame continues on page two (http://sarcasticgamer.com/wp/?p=6486&page=2).
