Anyone here have an IEEE membership? Even a lowly affiliate membership. I'm still working on the academic requirements, but it's a lifelong dream to be part of the de facto International Authority on technology.

I've honestly never heard of this before, mind informing me? It sounds pretty interesting.

My old instructor described it thus: "A bunch of geeks getting together, having a pizza party and deciding the standards the world's computers and technology should conform to."

The institute covers a lot more than computers, of course.

So they dont do anything then...

Come on, we wouldnt have Firewire (IEEE 1394) or wireless IEEE 802a,b,g and n

So saying they did nothing is a slight understatement:tongue:

The operative word here is should. Not everyone agrees with them on how things should be done. Computer hardware manufacturers are notorious for it as they're all attempting to dominate the market with their own technology, unlike, say washing machine manufaturers, who are happy with a reasonable piece of it. As it happens, I've got a couple of IEEE certifications, but I'm not an active member of the institute.

USB can bite my ass.

Since Firewire is integral with all my macs (and developed by apple) I can tell anyone first hand that my firewire 800 drives beat the crap out of USB.

Even my FW 400 is faster. eSata is too new and wont last simply because USB 3.0 and FW 1600 and 3200 are supposed to come out in a year or 2.

Besides, if there was no firewire, i'd be out of a job. Kinda hard to capture HD video sources without it. Haha.

LoL Firewire is good, and yeah about eSATA, but USB 3.0 burns down your house, ever read the SG article on it?
But oooh shiney new FW speeds :P

Yeah FW FTW
