Default Connection Speed on PSN and actual speed

I currently have the 22mps cable internet(along with a silly boost thing that ups my speed at the initial start of a download). The connection test in the XMB settings says I have 24mps download. I go to download the Ratchet demo and it is coming in at 3mps. Taking about 15min to download. That seems to be about standard for me. A 1-2 gig download takes me about 10 or so minutes. I can watch movies as I am downloading them off the store without ever having to wait for buffering. I've done everything I know to ensure a good connection. My PS3 is wired with a static IP, and opened all of the ports in the router for it. Media servers are turned off, and I have NAT type 2 settings.

While I seem to get everything off the network in a timely manner, I am not exactly downloading with the full speed of my connection. Does the PSN have a limit of about 3mps? I realize that the connection speed will go up and down depending on how busy the network is, but is there really that much more it can go up? What about with playing games like CoD and Uncharted 2 online, are they ever going to use the full potential of my bandwidth? My house only has one other computer, and it's mine. So there aren't going to be multiple downloads going on to eat up the bandwidth.

I am thinking of switching to a much more stable fiber optic connection with a 12mps connection. I am dropping my speed by 10mps, but I will still be above any speeds I get on PSN. Could that drop still for some unforseen reason effect my PSN connection for the worse?

PSN is definitely slower than downloading from the 360 or my PC, a 1 gb download takes me an hour if I'm lucky on psn (I have a 3mb connection)

For me it is the opposite with the 360. I have had 1gb+ downloads on XBL take over an hour, but usually it XBL is only just noticeably longer. But XBL is easier, and more forgiving the the PSN. I have no need to set up my router for my 360, but I had to for my PS3.

If your PS3 is wired with a static IP, then DMZ it if you haven't already. That made all the difference in the world for me.

I had a similar issue that still to this day holds true, ever since the latest FW update.

Here was my thread that got pretty much no attention to, but I understand that it could be my wire, and only happening to me.

My test for you would be to try the same thing. If you can connect to psn quicker on wifi then via hardwire, then I won't look like such an outcast.

When I go to internet test on my PS3 i usually get between 2-3mps, when I run the speedtest.com test on my PC I get 16mps. My stuff on PS3 usually downloads pretty fast but I just assumed this was a PS3 limitation. I'm also on wireless but haven't changed as I have no complaints.

The speed depends on your connection speed, the PSN servers and how popular the download is. If you're trying to download the most popular thing of that week then you're bound to get slower downloading times because everyone else is overloading the server with their demands to download the same thing.

Yeah, I usually download bigger stuff at night myself (like the MAG beta stuff). I have noticed that my speed is usually a little better when I'm on a physical line as opposed to wireless.

You all need to quit complaining it takes me 4 hours to download a 1.8 GB episode of Qore. So there! On a similar note Chubb what do you mean by nat2 and opening all your ports? Will that improve my download speed?

Agreed, The PSN servers probably can't handle as much as the MS ones because we don't pay for them.. They have to cut costs somehow, That seems to be the only explanation...

log into your router (usually 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1) you can google it for sure. You'll need the log in information as well which is probably still default which can also be googled, find UPnP and turn "on". that should fix your Nat, if not go on your PS3 and set the IP to a static IP address and than go back into your router and put that IP address into where it says DMZ which stands for De Militarized Zone. That way it is open from any firewall or port blocks. all of which can be googled and mostly availible in your routers manual. If not I'm sure there is a walk through somewhere.

Crap, for a minute then I thought you were making this thread into another 360 vs. PS3 debate.

Anyways, probably but Sony wishes to remain free for as long as possible.
