I recently read this book and instantly loved it. I promtly bought the film and it was great too. So I thought how much I wanted it to be a game. Tom Clancy owns the rights so there's no legal battle. I'm still stuck on what you would actually do in the game, drive your submarine as Cap'n Marco through the canyons, managing reactor temperature? It doesn't sound that fun but just being able to interact with such a great story would be so worth it. Does anyone agree with me or am I just crazy? Any ideas of what gameplay may involve?

There was one, or possibly even two, depending on how you count the different versions. I had the ZX Spectrum version. Mind-blowingly hard if I remember right, even by the standards of the time. It was a sort of platform/side scrolling shooter hybrid with some mini-games thrown in, as so many film tie-ins were in those days.
But if you want an actual submarine simulator that lets you do the things you're thinking of, I believe the Silent Hunter series comes highly recommended.

I wouldn't want it to be a submarine simulator I think that would make it REALLY boring. As for a synopsis basically Russian submarine captain Marko Ramius attemps to defect to the US with a brand new Russian sub, having to evade his fellow Russian. EDIT: Ok so there were two games on based on the book the other on the film but they were released in around 1989.

I'm making an effort to read all of Clancy's books.
Right now I'm at Without Remorse.
Great books from a great author.
